How much is one billion?

• The population of Houston is 2.1 million.

• If you had a million dollars in thousand dollar bills, it would be 4.3 inches tall.

• If you had a billion dollars in thousand dollar bills, it would be 358 feet tall! (~35 stories tall)

• It took you 11.6 days to be alive for a million seconds.

• It will take you 31.7 years to live for a billion seconds.

• In a supersonic airplane, you could travel one million miles in 31 days.

• It would take 85 years to travel one billion miles in that same airplane.

Demographic Transition Model

Stage 1: Slow Growth

• Population grew very slowly.

• Many children born, but also many die.

• Most people are farmers.

• Growth pattern until the 1700s.

Stage 2: Rapid Growth: LDC

• Hygiene and medical technology increases.

• Lots of babies being born and less are dying.

• Population increases dramatically in poor countries.

• Now reaching poor countries.

Stage 3: Slow Growth or No Growth: MDC

• Population begins to level off.

• People have less kids as they become wealthier.

• Kids are no longer an asset.

• Immigration is often the only reason they see any growth.

• More people are dying than are being born.

• Sometimes incentives given for more children. Abortion sometimes illegal.
