Reading Comprehension

1 (a) -

1 Skim the passage –

(i) Read the first sentence and the last sentence of every paragraph to get a general idea about

the passage.

(ii) Scan the passage – Read each and every sentence very carefully.

(iii) Look at the questions given.

(iv) Locate their answers and underline them.

(v) Write to the point answers in your own language as far as possible.

(b)

(i) For the word attack questions look for the difficult words in the same form (in the same part of

speech) for example – Noun for Noun Adjective for adjective etc.

NOTE-MAKING & ABSTRACTION

Attempting Question on Note-Making and Abstraction:

Note –making is a useful skill which comes in handy not only in attempting questions in your Class XII Board

Examination but also prepares you for life. Notes form an essential part of your academic life and help you in

the following ways:

Notes help you to remember the information you have gathered.

Notes come in handy for making quick revision before exams.

Note-making skills help in storing supplement material taken reference books and journals from

libraries.

Lengthy lessons can be condensed into short relevant pieces by making notes.

Notes help in understanding the texts better.

How to make notes?

Read the following steps for making clear and concise notes quickly:

Step 1 – Read the passage to get a gist of the passage, to know what it is about, i.e., the theme and subject of the

passage.

Step 2 – Read carefully, underlining or mentally or roughly making a note of the main ideas it deals with.

Step 3 – Add the sub-points which supplement the main points. There is no need to give examples, especially if

there are too many.

Step 4 – Pay attention to the way you would like to present notes, i.e., the format you would like to use.

How do I present my notes?

What is the format that I can use?

You can use different kinds of formats depending on the theme of the passage. It could be serial or sequential

such as flow charts, pie charts, etc. You should also use some abbreviations and contractions which are

easily recognizable.

The sub-points are also numbered and indented.

Form of sentences:

Complete sentences are not needed. Rather they are reduced to words and phrases.

Abbreviations and symbols used:

You can use different ways of abbreviations words, e.g.,

(a) Capitalize initial letter.

e.g., U.N. for United Nations

(b) Taking first few letters of the word.

e.g., Spirit for spiritual and Prac. For Practical

(c ) Taking first and last letters of the words, e.g., rdng. For reading, and edn. For education.

(d ) Adding ‘s’ to make plurals, e.g., bks. For books

(f) Symbols that are universally recognized

Note : The students should be made to practice at least two Passages in a month.

ADVANCED WRITING SKILLS

NOTICES

A notice provides information about important functions and events in written form. It is displayed usually at

prominent places, notice boards, journals

The difference between a circular and a notice is that circulars are announcements that are distributed to small

or selective groups of people within the organization, whereas notices are meant for a larger group of people,

newspapers etc.

Format-

The format should include the following-

(i) Name of the issuing institution right on the top in the centre .(If the name the institution is not provided , a

fictitious name or ABC school etc is to be written.)

(ii) The word NOTICE is to be written next in capital letters right below the name of the institution.

(iii) The date is written on the left hand corner.

(iv) The Title or Heading of the notice is written next.

(v) Signature, Content of the notice- what, when, where etc. For example, name of the event, day, date, time,

venue etc. and other relevant details.

(v) Name & designation of the issuing authority is to be mentioned on the left side below the body of notice.

(vi) It should be written in third person.

(vii) It should be written in a box.

(viii) The language should be formal and free from grammatical errors.

(ix) It should be written with economy of words. As the word limit is 50 words, it should be compact and

concise.

(x) Lastly there should be clarity in content.

GUIDELINES

FORMAT: Begins with a formal address to the audience concerned, along with speaker’s name and the Topic

of speech. In case of a debate, the speaker must tell whether he/she is speaking in favour of the motion

(Topic) or against the motion.

INTRODUCTION:

State the topic clearly.

Draw attention of the readers with a rhetorical question, stating facts or suitable quotation.

Place the topic in a perspective

Be clear and precise

EXPOSITION:

Discuss different points, merits, consequences etc.

Develop cause and effect relationship.

Use facts, examples, arguments

Bring in comparison and contrast.

Use wit and humour

In case of a debate give time to rebuttal( cut the points of the opponent convincingly)

4. Salutation in formal letter, the word “Dear” should not be used. Salutation can be Sir/Madam

5. The body of the letter should be in 3 or 4 paragraphs. The language/words used should be simple. Be

brief and to the point. Paragraphs should be linked to each other with all necessary details.

6. There should be no apostrophe in “Yours” and “Y” should be capital and “f” in “faithfully” should be
