Question 7 – What have you learnt since the start of the

course? By Tayla Debenham-Scott

Page 2: Question 7

Setting:

The setting I have used on my magazine is effective because it is a school magazine and it is set in a school. The audience know this because there are computers in the background.

Mise-en-scene:

The costumes on this front cover are effective because it is a school magazine and the models are wearing schools uniform, makes it easier for the reader to understand it is a school magazine. The props used also represent that it is a school magazine because he is holding a pen and has paper in front of him.

Colours:

The colours I have used are bright and also follow a house style because the colours of Neale Wade are red, black and white.

Shot types:

The shot type I used was a mid-shot because the reader is then able to see the setting, the models and the costumes that they are wearing.

Layout:

For my layout I used the route of the eye and an ordered layout., I used an ordered layout because it is a school magazine it should be neat.

Mode of Address:

This magazine speaks to the audience in a positive tone and an educational tone because it is a school magazine and the magazine should come across as educational but also interesting to read.

Editing Techniques:

For the front cover of this magazine, I edited the picture by making it brighter than the original picture because I wanted the picture to stand out.

Fonts:

The fonts I used on this front cover were simple and basic. I used sans serif font for the masthead and coverlines because it makes them stand out.

Photography:

The photography that I used was with my iphone as it produces good quality pictures.

Page 3: Question 7

Mise-en-scene:

The costume I used on this front cover is conventional for pop magazine as it is casual but also brightly coloured.

Colours:

The colours I have used on my pop magazine front cover are conventional because they are bright and feminine meaning that they relate to the target audience.

Layout:

The layout for my front cover follows the route of the eye and the left third.

Fonts:

I have used a variety of fonts on my front cover because I used sans serif fonts for the masthead and main coverlines.

Mode of Address:

My magazine speaks to the audience in a positive tone because it is based on the idea of pop music and pop music is usually upbeat and happy.

Editing Techniques:

For my front cover I used many techniques such as cropping, effects of the image, adding fonts and removing backgrounds so that the fonts looked natural. I used websites such as pic monkey and font space because they were effective and helped with what I wanted to achieve.

Shot types:

I used a mid-shot for my front cover image but I also used close-ups and long shots for the poster images. I did this because the main image is the most important and a mid-shot means that they can see the costume and also see the emotions on her face. Using a close-up for the poster images is effective because it is a smaller image and you want the reader to be able to recognise who it is.

Setting:

The setting I used for my magazine was just a plain wall because I wanted the model to stand out and not have anything to eye catching behind her.

Photography:

The photography that I used when doing this photo shoot was a professional camera so that I could produce great quality photos for my magazine. I also used my iphone for the poster images.

ComparisonFrom looking at both my preliminary magazine and my pop magazine I can see that I have improved in terms of shot types, layout, fonts, costumes and editing techniques.

The mastheads of my magazines are similar because they are both big and bold, although my pop magazine’s is more interesting to look at.

The coverlines of my magazines are very different as my pop magazine has more interesting fonts and a colour background, which makes it stand out even more.

The main coverlines are very similar because they are bold and white.

At the bottom of the page on my preliminary magazine I have another coverline but with my pop magazine I have included other images which makes it stand out more when the audience first look at the magazine.

The images are very similar as they both have smiling models in them which gives off a positive feel for the magazine.
