Question 5- How did you attract your audience?Meghan Moore

Page 2: Question 5 of Magazine Evaluation

The StyleThe very first thing that would have attracted my audience would be the front cover. With the almost terrifying picture of “House of Atreus” with their extremely dramatic skeleton makeup on the front cover, my front cover automatically would stand out in the display of magazines. The direct address of “House of Atreus” would also draw people in, as well as the unisex feel to the magazine due to the mix of male and female artists on the cover. As well as this, by having the box out text with other established artists within it, it would attract a variety of different people to my magazine, depending on what kind of rock music they’d like to listen to.

A DiversionFollowing on from the initial success of the style and content within my magazine, there are many reasons why my audience would like to read my magazine. Since the age group of the people who read my magazine is young adults, my magazine would most likely be used as a diversion from everyday life, be this school or work. This is especially true in regards to the uses and gratifications theory. Since my magazine was going to be used as a diversion, I included a lot of fun articles as well as more serious ones, such as “All Hail the King” where the artist Joseph Zanelli-King tells the readers how to take pictures for Instagram. This is not particularly hard hitting and would therefore work well as a distraction.

Personal RelationshipsAs well as this, my audience would very likely want to read my magazine to help form more personal relationships with people or as a source of companionship. To accommodate to this, I included a “The Notes” page so that people could contact the magazine- this would allow my magazine to have a more human feel since members of the public could be included in the magazine and people’s opinions could be seen by all. Also, by having a large variety of information in the magazine, personal relationships could be built up with the information discovered in the magazine.

Personal IdentityIn regards to the personal identity part of the uses and gratifications theory, my magazine would attract the audience because by extending their music taste, they would be able to find new things about themselves and also a new way to interact with people. Also, by having interviews with the artists then the audience could find out that they have similarities with the artists in question.

SurveillanceMy magazine would attract an audience with its articles about the artists’ lives, as this would allow them to have more surveillance over their favourite band. By keeping lots of my contents page subheadings quite teasing with the lack of information I give out, the reader will want to get the magazine to find out more.

Social MediaFinally, by incorporating a large amount of social media, my audience would be interested in my magazine. By using multimedia in documenting different things in regards to my magazine, such as filming different fun tasks with the band and tweeting photos, the magazine would become much more widely available to a larger audience, since the majority of young people these days have access to some kind of computer or phone and are on a large number of different social media sites.
