Josh Robinson’s Media Evaluation

To attract my audience, which is young adults, I have used a very bright colour scheme to make the magazine very attractive and eye catching. I tried to use similar colour schemes as popular magazines such as ‘XXL’, ‘Q’ and NME, Red, Black and White to create a sense of audience familiarity.

The main theme of my magazine is talking about the latest phenomenon's in music, so the photography of my magazine is mostly pictures of the most popular indie/pop artists, to appeal to a wider audience as well as the primary audience of Young Adults.

The Guttenberg design principle follows the conventions of other magazines, and the house style is consistent throughout, to give a sense of professionalism and make the audience feel like they are reading a formal magazine.

The text, especially on my front cover has been used to attract any audience because of the use of phrases such as ‘TOP 50’, and by highlighting certain words like ‘LAST’ and ‘Fame’. I tried to make these words stand out as much as possible, by changing the colour of them to the most dominant colour of my colour scheme, red, this contrasts nicely with the white background, and makes them the dominant contrast of the front cover.

The text inside of my magazine is very formal but not enough to bore certain areas of my audience, the text style, also gives the impression that the magazine is very informative. I have enlarged phrases on the double page spread, such as ‘I vowed that I would use the money to help my mum get better’ to make the audience feel more emotionally connected to the story and bring in readers who are skimming through the magazine.
