WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE MY MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY? by Tom Fearon

Page 2: Question 3

BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS

Blumhouse Productions is an American movie production company, founded in the early 2000’s and run by Jason Blum. It is a multi-media production company that has pioneered a new model of studio filmmaking, producing high quality micro budget films. Its model is to produce movies independently and then release them wide through the studio system.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

Paranormal Activity is a 2007 American supernatural horror film written, co-produced, photographed, edited, and directed by Oren Peli. Paranormal activity was one of their first major films and was the next biggest film to use hand held cameras. I can compare my film to Paranormal Activity as it also uses hand held cameras. This means that Blumhouse Productions would be very comfortable to go ahead with my film.

INSIDIOUS

Insidious is a 2010 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan, written by Leigh Whannell. Insidious was very successful costing $1.5 million to make and grossing nearly $100 million. I can compare my film to Insidious as the poster looks a lot like the end part of my opening sequence. This is very useful as Blumhouse Productions will have no trouble creating a front cover for my film and improving the titles.

SINISTER

Sinister is a 2012 supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. Sinister was made after both Paranormal Activity and Insidious and was released in the United States on October 12, 2012, and in the UK on October 5, 2012.I can compare my film to Sinister because the film is based around video clips found in a haunted house. I want my film to have the similar feel of a haunted house so I believe that Blumhouse Productions would be able to execute my idea with ease.

WHY BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS?

I believe that Blumhouse Productions would be the best media institution for my film as they are specialists in my genre and take on low budget films which I believe my film would be. They have also had a lot of success with previous films. For example, ‘Paranormal Activity’ was the most profitable film in Hollywood history grossing close to $200 million worldwide after being made for $15,000. I think that if they went ahead with my film they could turn it into a very successful horror film. The three films that I have looked at all have sequels which is another reason why I think that Blumhouse would be the best choice for me. If my film is successful then I can guarantee that they will be able to produce a sequel.
