Poster Here is the poster that advertised the film and one of the screen shots from the actual film. These were really helpful to us. The idea for our red rose came originally from Schindler’s List, as we felt that the iconography was really strong, mainly the concept that it was a young girl that was being featured. Watching the child walk through the streets being un-noticed by the Nazi’s and getting home, and hiding under her bed. Later in the film we see her red coat on a pile of other coats, symbolising that she did eventually die. The poster manages to make the red coat really stand out against the rest of the images that are in black and white. We did this on our poster with the image of the rose; we felt that without it the poster would have been exceptionally boring as it would have been in only black and white. The way the poster for Schindler’s List has a washed out image of the ‘list’ behind the red coat, we tried to recreate with the rose image at the bottom of our poster. We did manage however, to bring up the red better in our film so it stood out more, obviously the sort of technology we have now was not available when the film was made. As you can see here, in comparison our red icon is a lot stronger but we did get our idea from the film so it’s un-fair to criticise as they didn’t have the ability to do it back then.

Poster

Here is the poster that advertised the film and one of the screen shots from the actual film. Later in the film we see her red coat on a pile of other coats, symbolising that she

did eventually die.

When comparing our poster to that of Titanic, we based the main layout on it, as it has the couple at the top, with both the females with the light on their face and the males with a darker shadowed face, for us it represents the fact that William is her dark secret, and that they are not supposed to be together, it

appears to be the same for the Titanic poster, it is enhanced by the fact that Rose is looking away from Jack. Our poster however, does not show as much symbolism through colour, as it is not possible with black and white to show class or emotion as easily, it is all about the expression, and in the case of our poster we managed choose an image where Rose is looking deep into Williams eyes, which helps to show how much she adores him.

We used ideas from this ‘Pride and Prejudice’ poster, to slit the images in half by the banner, this sort of idea we felt was a good way of tying the title into the images so to merge them together into one whole image.

Also, we liked how in the top half there was the couple and below, a scene that is clearly of great importance in the film, we felt this was a really good layout for a poster and used it as a basis for ours.

Magazine

Here is our magazine that we designed; we clearly used the same name and layout of the Empire magazines. From this one here, we liked the use of the gold and red together, firstly because the red fits in with our film, but the gold really enhances it, and makes it feel expensive and important, because gold in itself is expensive. We felt that the gold and red stood against the black and white picture really well and made her stand out.

We also liked how the background on the original magazine was blurred slightly so that the main character stood out; we therefore blurred the background around our main character. We firstly separated her from the background and made her slightly larger so that she took up most of the page, we could then boost up the contrast on her a bit more.

When it comes to this magazine, it gives an option at the top of the magazine to choose between magazine covers. It makes the magazine more about the main theme. We chose to focus in on our film type, by making our magazine into a short film special, that way we could make our short film appear more relevant.

From making this magazine, I have learnt that you have to think really hard about what headlines and pictures you put on the cover, because it is first impressions and if someone likes something on the cover they will buy the magazine.
