TYPOGRAPHY

My production: Existing product:

In my own product I used the same font for the magazine and the poster because these are the things people will be looking at most as they would be on the high street, in stores and in the general public, therefore will be easily recognizable. I also used the same smaller font in the trailer and poster. This also applies to Spring Breakers where a similar font is used for the poster and in the trailer, the font looks quite exotic and may represent night clubs etc, which suggests a theme in the film.

IMAGES

My product:

Existing product:

In both products, the photographs used throughout the promotional package all represent the characters in similar ways. For example, in my product the characters are all seen together with quite a negative expression of their faces, this represents their inferiority throughout the film and how the main focus is on their struggle against the antagonist. Spring Breakers, however, portrays the girls in provocative costume, posing in an extremely feminine way, as if they were drunk, or flirting. This reflects their sassy and dominant personalities in the film. Similar types of images are used throughout the promotional packages to put across these representations to the audience so that they will be able to recognize the characters personally, even before watching the film. For Spring Breakers, they may hear about a film about a group of sassy, careless girls and immediately be able to think of Spring Breakers, purely because they have this constant association.

Again, much like my magazine image and my trailer, Project X have used an image representative of the setting of the film for their poster so that the audience understand the general atmosphere of the film. In the case of Project X, it is a party that goes wrong, which is suggestive of a lot of action. In my case, the characters are standing behind a fence, signifying that they are trapped from something, again suggesting action.

There is also relevant mise en scene throughout the Wild, Spring Breakers and Project X promotional packages. In Wild, the prop of the gate acts as a link between the package, in Spring Breakers it is the character’s bikini’s, and in Project X it is the alcohol which acts as the link.

COLOURSIt is important to have a prevalent colour scheme throughout the promotional packages because this is the most noticeable part. Both my product and Spring Breakers have used a combination of pink and black which I used to portray femininity combined with the evilness and masculinity of action films.

THEMES

One of the main themes of my production, as stated before, revolves around girls not only being involved in action but are also the main antagonist. This is a similar theme in Spring Breakers. In my production, I have used colours to represent the two opposing themes of femininity and action films. The bright, cheerful, girly pink contrasts against the low key lighting throughout all of my promotional packages which also appears in Spring Breakers. Both trailers also convey scenes of action such as gun shots, fights, running away, crying etc, which are all conventional to have in an action film and both represent my desired theme.

Through the use of typography, images, representations, colours, mise en scene and themes, any film is able to create a brand identity which fits their desired product. In this case, my production is unconventional because females are often seen to be inferior and weak and often the victim, whereas males are usually the antagonists, involved in crime and action. In both Spring Breakers and Wild, the role of the male is less significant as a pose to conventional action thrillers, such as Pulp Fiction, Die Hard, etc. This is what makes my brand identity so unique.

Despite my product being unconventional I have still successfully produced an accurate brand identity which makes it clear to the audience it is purposefully unconventional. In addition, the fact that I have related this so closely with a successful existing product, shows that it is possible to create a brand identity from something that is regarded as unconventional.
