Evaluation Question 2 & 3

Page 2: Question 2 & 3 of evaluation

Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The combination of our main product and ancillary texts is very effective. Our two ancillary texts that we were asked to make was a radio trailer and a film poster. Both ancillary texts mirror and link to our short film in their use of music, pace and theme and so on. For example, the main music that we chose to use in our short film we also used in our radio trailer. Also we included dialogue from our film in the radio trailer. This created a sense of consistency between both. Furthermore, the genre of our film is towards a thriller/drama, so the pace of the film is slow and dramatic. We tried to mirror this in our radio trailer by making it as dramatic as we could without making a fast paced trailer that doesn't link to the film.

In addition, we have succeeded in reflecting key themes in our film through our ancillary texts. On of the key themes in our film is the use of social media sites and we have reflected this in our ancillary texts especially the film poster. In the film poster we have an image of a phone and the Facebook anonymous icon. Also the font that we decided to use in the film poster is the same font used in Facebook, Helvetica. This all links into the theme of social media and also creates a sense of consistency between the three productions. We feel we have met the expectations of our target audience when designing and creating these ancillary texts by keeping the music, language and themes quite modern.

Question 3: what have you learned from your audience feedback?

Our film is a social realism film that warns against the many dangers of social media, because of this the demographic group that we sought to target as our primary audience are those that use social media sites such as Facebook and what's app quite a lot. Although many groups fall under this criteria or teenagers and adult, we have decided to target mainly teenagers. This decision came after our initial ideas when we decided to a young teenage girl as our protagonist. We felt that teenagers would be more able to relate to this character. When we were discussing who in particular our target audience would be during initial idea we decided to target the everyday teen. Those that are constantly exposed to new forms of social media everyday. This is the generation who spend most of their time online exploring new social media sites such as Instagram, snapchat. We found it somewhat easy to cater to this target audience because we are from the same generation and we ourselves use these sites.

This is an image of the kind of people that our film is aimed at. They’re young and outgoing and have a smartphone which allows them to keep up to date on social media sites.

We started gathering audience feedback after our initial ideas. We first decided to make a questionnaire to decide what the name of our production would be. We as a group decided on 6 titles that we thought would fit our film and then asked other people what film title they liked best, after pitching our film idea. The people we approached all fit into the criteria of our target audience so we were able to get helpful feedback. After the questionnaire we formed a tally chart and choose the most popular on as our film title. Which happened to be ‘Anonymous’. We also decided to gather audience feedback on the first and final drafts of our film poster. We posted our final draft on a popular social media site, Instagram, and asked people for their thoughts. Overall we got 27 likes and a few criticisms on how to improve it, one of which was to change the positioning of our main picture so the layout of our poster would look better, which we acted on.
