{Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Page 2: Question 1 of media evaluation

Our media Product (opening sequence) follows typical Thriller forms and conventions. In pre-production we researched Thriller conventions and also watched several Thriller opening sequences to gain insight into what Thriller products include.

How my media product USES forms and conventions

Some ways in which our product follows typical codes and conventions:-Slow Camerawork-Slow and gripping soundtrack-Protagonist wears bright clothes (white dress)-Tense-A protagonist gets thrown into an extra ordinary situation-Captivating

Our storyline was inspired by ‘The House at the End Of The Street’ and ‘Disturbia’ where a protagonist gets thrown into an extra ordinary situation. We were also influenced by these opening sequences to use slow camerawork and a slow soundtrack. ‘The Lovely Bones’ also has very simple camerawork and a slow beginning which we were also inspired by. By using using a slow soundtrack this created an uneasy and tense atmosphere which reflects on the genre for Thriller’s for their aim is to make the audience tense and gripped on the storyline.

I created a wordle including the forms and conventions of the Thriller genre.

When watching our opening sequence we wanted the audience to ask questions and ask why certain things are happening to keep them hooked. We included a note which says ‘I Know’ which would cause the audience to wonder who wrote it and why it’s there. This is conventional to the thriller genre because it’s keeping them hooked and has a sense of mystery which needs to be solved.

How my media product DEVELOPS forms and conventions.

In our media product we developed some forms and conventions of the thriller genre to go with our opening sequence.

To develop the conventions we used a female to play the protagonist. This is unconventional to the thriller genre but we believed it would make the film more intriguing. We used an 18 year actress to play a 20 year old woman to make her look venerable for 20 is still quite young which will make the audience feel protective over her.

How my media product CHALLENGES forms and conventions.

We challenged the forms and conventions in our opening sequence by using no dialogue. This is not conventional to the Thriller genre for in ‘Disturbia’ there is quite a lot of dialogue giving a small back story to the protagonist and his father. Also, in ‘The Lovely Bones’ a voice over is used to give a small backstory to the female protagonist. We decided to use no dialogue for we thought it would create more of an atmosphere and more mystery which I believe worked.
