In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

QUESTION 1

Page 2: Question 1

The layout for the magazine is conventional because the model is facing the camera. I didn’t want the model in the same pose and the one of the left because that wasn’t the ‘look’ I was going for. I wanted it to be more subtle. The writing is on either side like a conventional magazine, with the same look for the font. The masthead on the ‘SPIN’ is very conventional because it is on the top left. Whereas, for my magazine I have placed the masthead in the middle. It is still partly conventional because the masthead is at the top.

Front Cover

Page 3: Question 1

Masthead It is very conventional to place the masthead here. The reason why this is done is because when the magazines are stacked in shelf’s, the masthead is the part that you usually see.

My masthead is placed across the whole top of the magazine, with ‘THE’ at a right angle to the rest. I added ‘THE’ because the masthead looked a bit bare without it, it also sounds better.

I did place the masthead in the conventional way to start off with but I decided not to because it didn’t fit right. I also wanted the ‘t’ in ‘Pitch.’ to be in the middle because the ‘t’ represents the cross and that is significant because it’s a Christian music magazine.

Page 4: Question 1

In this magazine the main cover story is placed at the top right hand corner. It is only slightly bigger than the other texts. It is conventional to have the cover story font to be bigger than the other sub-story fonts, but not as big as the masthead.

I didn’t place the masthead in the same place as the other magazine. The reason why is because I think it is more conventional to have the main cover story to be at the bottom in the middle. This worked a lot better with the image that was on my front cover as well.

Page 5: Question 1

I liked the way that the font was in different colours and sizes.

I took on the different colours of the font for the sub-stories. This fitted in with the theme colours of my magazine.

Contents page

Page 7: Question 1

I really liked the layout of the ‘mixmag magazine. So I placed this image of their contents page over a blank document and placed boxes over, so I knew exactly where to place everything.

Page 8: Question 1

I used the same layout of having the larger text in a different colour as the categories.

I also placed the numbers on the left hand side which is very

conventional.

For all the stories that are in the contents page, there are subheadings in bold and further information in normal font. This is also quite conventional.

I have also kept to the four categories.

Page 9: Question 1

I put the title ‘contents’ in the same place. However, I chose to not put it inside a box because it didn’t look right as my theme colours were black and blue.

I also placed a little picture of the front cover of the magazine

I decided to put the masthead at the top of the page to make it all link it.

Page 10: Question 1

All the images on the contents page are in the same place.

I also placed the page numbers on the pictures which correspond to the story that the picture is from.

Double page spread

Page 12: Question 1

The pictures are both on the left hand side like a normal conventional magazine.

The pictures are in different positions because the picture of the left looks a little bit sexual and this isn't the look I wanted for my magazine. So I decided to go for someone playing the guitar which is partly what the story is about.

Page 13: Question 1

I really liked the big text in grey behind the picture, so I used it on my magazine. However, I wanted a name, so I had to do the same thing but using a four letter word.

I liked the contrast between the script text and the bold, so I included this in my double page spread. Also, the word ‘inspiration’ looks good being in a script font.

This is also on my magazine and also works well with my colour theme.
