An anti-terror Bill in the House of Commons has a concerned group of citizens organizing a forum to discuss the potential impacts.

Stand Up for the North Committee, with speaker and member Peter Ewart will be at the Arts and Recreation Cen-tre, April 1, 7 p.m. to discuss Bill C-51, a security and anti-terror legislation which many feel infringes on basic priva-cy’s and freedoms.

“It also includes measures that, we feel, curtail freedom of speech and allow CSIS, with open-ended judicial war-rants, to break Canadian law, violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, invade priva-cy, and commit “dirty tricks” against citizens and organiza-tions.”

Ewart said the committee

is committed to encouraging discussion and debate among smaller northern communi-ties, noting public meetings regarding the state of forestry, sustainability, and more.

The committee is made up of volunteers committed to renewing and revitalizing the region.

Hence, the need for a discus-sion on Bill C-51, Ewart said.

“Many prominent Canadi-ans have spoken out against this legislation, calling it dan-gerous, excessive and dictato-rial, as well as alien to the le-gal norms of the country,” he said.

Community Development Challenges

Mayor Bob [email protected]

Bob Simpson, Mayor

This column is paid for by the City of Quesnel.410 Kinchant Street, Quesnel, BC V2J 7J5

www.quesnel.ca

While the Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) presents some unique challenges to our community, it’s important to recognize that many of the challenges we face are not unique to Quesnel or a result of the MPB epidemic. This perspective is critical to collectively confronting our challenges and turning them into real opportunities to evolve and modernize our community.

Most municipalities are facing budget crunches and have to rethink how they de-liver services and maintain critical infrastruc-ture. As I noted in my last column, Quesnel City Council is already demonstrating leadership on this front. However, we have plenty of opportunities to be more creative as we start to work on our 2016 budget. For example, we must do a better job of plan-ning for our capital projects so we are less reliant on consultants and can maximize the use of our own public works crews. This approach to capital works will save money in the long run and will ensure that your tax dollars remain in Quesnel to stimulate our local economy.

The increasing concern about vacant retail spaces and safety in the downtown core is not unique to Quesnel and has nothing to do with the MPB epidemic. Most commu-nities in North America are struggling with these same concerns. Council is initiating a Social Sustainability and Public Safety Task Force to explore these issues and we will be looking for your feedback in order to proac-tively address them.

While a vibrant downtown core is critical to the resiliency of Quesnel, Council, like all municipal governments, is under pressure to develop retail opportunities on the fringe -- in our case, in South Quesnel. The nature of retail shopping has changed and brand name retailers generally are not interested in locating downtown. Your Council will be struggling with this issue over the coming months, as there are investors who want to develop retail opportunities in South Quesnel. Enabling this investment will expand local shopping opportunities; it will also require Council and our business com-munity to find creative ways to maintain the vibrancy of our downtown core.

An ageing population, the struggle to find volunteers, the increasing desire to see our community become “chemical free,” and interest in broadening our city’s amenities are all common challenges for local govern-ments everywhere. It’s vital to recognize that Quesnel’s challenges are not unique, nor are they solely a result of the MPB epidemic. Council’s job is to proactively and collabo-ratively manage these challenges and turn each one into an opportunity to develop our community.

Important Notice to Resource Road Users

A province wide, safety-oriented project is underway to standardize two-way radio communications on forest service roads and some resource roads. This project includes standardized signage, new dedicated resource road radio channels and standardized call procedures.

The Quesnel Natural Resource District, along with other districts in the Southern and Northern Interior, will begin implementing new resource road radio channels commencing on May 4th, 2015. Districts on the Coast and in the Cariboo have already transitioned or are currently transitioning.

Forest industry workers and other road users using mobile radios must have their radios reprogrammed to incorporate the new resource road channels.

It is recommended that road users retain current radio frequencies until they are sure they are no longer required.

New signs posted on local resource roads indicate which radio channel to use and the calling interval, with drivers required to indicate their direction of travel and their vehicle type. Drivers using mobile radios must call according to the posted channels and call protocols.

All road users are reminded that forest service roads are not radio-controlled, but radio-assisted. All users should drive safely and according to road and weather conditions.

It is strongly recommended that all resource road users exercise additional caution during this transition period.

Local resource road safety committees have worked together to implement these changes. More information (including radio communications protocols, radio channels, maps and standardized signs) is available online at: www.for.gov.bc.ca/hth/engineering/Road_Radio_Project.htm

If you have questions about this project, please contact the Quesnel Natural Resource District office (Ministry of Forests, Lands

and Natural Resource Operations) at 250-992-4400, the website above, or Industry Canada at 1 800 667-3780.

Stopping some drugs abruptly can cause health problems. If you have any questions about one of your medications, our pharmacists will give you the information you need. There are people who still clean their ears out with those cotton-tipped applicators. Not a good idea! It could result in damage to the eardrum. There are some good ear drops to remove ear wax. Even using vegetable oil in the ear will help. Did you know that pharmacists were involved in formulating two of the most popular soft drinks in the world? They are Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Coca Cola. The ginger ale was called “dry” because it had less sugar in it than other products. It was a big seller during the U.S. Prohibition Era because, used as a mixer, it made homemade booze more palatable.Want an easy source of fibre? Try figs. Five of them (about 40 grams) contain 5 grams of fibre, 70% of which is insoluble fibre to provide bulk to your bowels. The rest is soluble fibre which helps lower “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and slows digestion of carbohydrates to aid in stabilizing blood sugar. Tasty too! Ensuring enough fibre in your diet is a good habit to get into. Another good habit is to use our pharmacy for all your health needs. We welcome you.

The B.C. government has fired its Auditor General for Local Government, after accountant Basia Ruta “lost all confidence” of her supervisors to complete audits that compare local government spending practices.

“Under the Auditor General for Local Govern-ment Act, I am required, as the minister responsible, to seek the Audit Council’s recommenda-tion regarding the removal of the auditor general for local government,” Com-munity Minister Coralee Oakes, who took the action on the recommen-dation of the government-appointed audit council said.

“Pursuant to its mandate under the act, the Audit Council considered my request and subsequently issued a recommendation and resolution to remove the auditor general for lo-cal government.”

“The auditor general for local government’s obstruction of an intended review of her office has created an intolerable situation that compounds the unstable work environment and lack of performance from that office.

“I believe removing the auditor general is necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the office.”

Former deputy minister Chris Trumpy was due to start his own review of the office Monday. It is the first attempt in Canada to do “performance audits” by comparing groups of municipalities, but the performance of Ruta’s office has become the

pressing issue.Oakes said Ruta will not

be offered severance pay, because the government has determined she has been fired for cause.

The work environment in the Surrey office of the AGLG had deteriorated, and Ruta’s decision to refuse Trumpy’s involvement led to the decision, she said.

Hired to execute an idea proposed by Premier Christy Clark in her 2012 bid for the B.C. Liberal Party leadership, Ruta set herself a target of 18 audits in the first year. Clashes with the staff at her Surrey office and the audit council began to emerge last year.

NDP local government critic Selina Robinson said the two-year-old office has lost credibility over spending $5.2 million over two years to produce only one audit. Two more reports were issued last week.

The function should be included in the existing B.C. Auditor General office, which is an independent office of the legislature, Robinson said.

Oakes said she remains committed to the current structure, which had envisioned three audits in the first year and five in the second. It was Ruta who raised expectations far beyond that and then didn’t deliver, she said.

Northern Development has approved $9,448 in funding for the Northern Strike Paintball Association to build two speedball paintball fields in Quesnel.

The proposed project includes leveling a 400’ x 150’ playing field, removing stumps and clearing brush left from a logging operation.

The Northern Strike Paintball Association hosts numerous tournaments and events throughout

the year and attracts paintball enthusiasts and competitive teams from across British Columbia.

The addition of speedball fields is designed to compliment and enhance the existing park, as well as provide new opportunities to attract teams from outside the province, including the ability to host provincial, national and international tournaments.

The grant was approved

through Northern Development’s Community Halls and Recreation Facilities program.

The Northern Strike Paintball Association submitted an application to Northern Development a few months ago to access a $9,448 grant to build two speedball fields at their facility. The application was submitted to the Trust’s Community Halls and Recreation Facilities program, which provides up to $30,000 for this type

of project so it fit the bill of the funding program. The project received a resolution of support from the City of Quesnel and support from the Trust’s Cariboo Chilcotin Lillooet Regional Advisory Committee.

The grant was approved based on that support, as well as the project’s ability to help the association generate new revenue and grow local tourism opportunities.

Celebrating Quesnel Rodeo Club’s 50th Anniversary and

Cowboy Heritage WeekCowboys have had an important role in B.C. for more than two centuries. Raising and herding cattle, providing a secure food source, and preserving the natural environment were some of the jobs that cowboys have historically carried out.

From the valleys of the Fraser-Nicola, the grasslands of Boundary-Similkameen country, and the rugged landscapes of the Cariboo-Chilcotin – cowboy culture can be found throughout our province.

This year’s Cowboy Heritage Week fell between March 8 and 15 earlier this month that recognized the importance of cowboys and ranching as part of our economic, cultural heritage, stewardship of our lands and care for livestock.

This year, also marks the 50th Anniversary of the Quesnel Rodeo, the largest amateur rodeo in British Columbia. Two of my favourite events hosted are the Billy Barker Days Rodeo and the BCRA Championship Rodeo that showcases the skills, determination, commitment, fortitude and willingness that our proud western heritage in the Cariboo was founded on.

Since the 1860’s, when enterprising cattleman and cowboys drove thousands of cattle into the Cariboo to feed the hungry miners searching for gold during the Cariboo Gold Rush, ranching has been common throughout the Cariboo region and remains an important part of our economy, social, and cultural life in our province’s cowboy and ranching history.

Thanks to the hard work of the Quesnel Rodeo Club and to each of the cowboys, cowgirls, ranchers and all those dedicated to our shared value of supporting the preservation of British Columbia’s Cowboy culture, heritage and history.

Island Mountain Arts, the ArtsWells Festival and BC Musi-cian Magazine are pleased to announce a contest to win a scholarship to attend a four-day intensive pre-festival Song-writing Workshop, July 28 – 31 with Stephen Fearing and Linda McRae. Along with the scholarship (valued at $476), the winner will be given a solo set at the 12th Annual ArtsWells Festival Of All Things Art, July 31 – Aug. 3 and will be featured both in BC Musician Magazine and in an interview on CBC Radio’s province wide arts and cul-ture program, North by Northwest with Sheryl MacKay.

Stephen Fearing, who is well known for his solo work, as well as with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, says “there are many different opinions on how to write a ‘good’ song and taste is always a matter of opinion. However, there are fundamental ingredients, vital to creating a great song and ways of ap-proaching songwrit-ing, which have stood the test of time in all genres of western music.”

In this workshop, which is co-led by veteran songwriter and past member of Spirit of the West, Linda McRae, partici-pants will spend time defining and examin-ing those ‘fundamen-

tal ingredients’ of a song through per-formance, discussion and hands-on writing. The contest is open to emerging and profes-sional songwriters who submit entries. Entries will be judged on originality, melody,

Better approach

Last month, the province made it clear that student debt is a problem they are not giving

up on.The provincial Liberals introduced

a new government policy, using one of the few tools available to track down people who aren’t paying off their student loans, by linking defaulted debt to driver’s licence renewals. With about $185 million currently

on the books as defaulted and unpaid, there is no doubt that student debt is a problem for the province. But it is a problem for the students as well. There isn’t a student heading into

college or university who doesn’t expect to find a well-paying job waiting for them. In many cases, that is exactly what happens, and their student loans are paid back easily. For others though, it is not so easy.

After four years of university, the job market may have changed and the expected job is no longer there, or entry-level wages are so low it becomes a choice between rent and making student loan payments. And once the six-month grace

period for beginning to repay student loans expires, finding those who aren’t paying can be a costly effort, hence the move to deny driver’s licence renewals to anyone in arrears. The province has long used the

withholding of driving privileges to collect unpaid provincial court fines and traffic tickets, so it is no great leap to see how the same methods could be used in this instance. The bump in this road of political

logic and good intentions, though, is that driving is often necessary to making a living. Denying a driver’s licence isn’t likely to increase anyone’s ability to pay back an outstanding loan.A better approach would be to

find a way to work with defaulters in order to help them meet their obligations, rather than penalizing the disadvantaged further.

–Black Press

The B.C. government has made its most significant moves in

decades to address the needs of some of the province’s poorest people.

The largest financial commitment is for a new program to help single parents escape from the welfare trap. There are 16,000 single parents in B.C. receiving provincial income assistance or disability payments, most of them women.

Even if they could find an entry-level job, it wouldn’t pay enough to cover the child care they would need to go to work. Worst of all, the current system requires that if they enrol in training, they lose their income assistance, including dental and extended medical care for themselves and their children.

That is the welfare trap, one of the most perverse government policies to have survived into our supposedly enlightened modern era.

The new program takes effect in September. It will not only continue income assistance payments when single parents enrol in skills training, it promises to

cover their child care and transportation costs for an approved training program of up to one year.

Medical and child care costs will then be covered for up to a year after training, to allow a transition to employment.

Approved training means training for jobs that are identified as in demand, requiring high school and occupation-specific training that can be completed in a year or less. They include retail sales, general office work and assistance jobs in health services.

Another overdue policy change is to double the allowable earnings for all income assistance recipients from $200 to $400 a month. This gives people a chance to improve their circumstances by taking whatever part-time or casual work they can

manage, without having that little income cut from their already meagre welfare cheques.

And then there was the recent decision to end the claw-back of parental child support payments from income assistance payments.

The province has for many years run a costly child maintenance enforcement program to track down (mostly) deadbeat dads and force them to pay at least a token amount to support their children. Now when they pay child support to a single parent on income assistance, they will at least have the satisfaction of knowing the children actually receive the extra benefit.

These harsh, historic policies were built around a philosophy that welfare is a temporary last resort, to be withdrawn as soon as some other source of income is identified. That is a valid if unfashionable position to take on behalf of working taxpayers who pay for all this, but it only makes sense if the income assistance recipient has a realistic option.

For those who are already in the entry-level

job market, the minimum wage goes up 20 cents an hour in September, from $10.25 to $10.45. This is the beginning of an annual review that will tie the wage to the consumer price index.

A paltry sum, to be sure, but anyone who still thinks jacking the minimum wage up to $15 an hour is a magic solution that won’t cost some entry-level jobs is clinging to a socialist dream world.

Editor:RE: Observer Feedback,

March 11 letter – A simple, but private matter.

Let me start by thanking you for bringing to our attention why more people need to advocate public breastfeeding. Contrary to your opinion that “some small group or single person” is promoting public breastfeeding, this is an important social issue for everyone.

You say that breastfeeding was “never intended to be done in public”. Does seeing a baby eat from a bottle in public make you uncomfortable? You then

compare the act of using the toilet to the act of breastfeeding.

The first is eliminating bodily waste while the second is feeding a baby – this not a logical comparison.

It’s time for a serious look at what makes some individuals uncomfortable about breastfeeding. In our society, breasts are used publically to market everything from magazines to cars and yet when a breast is used to feed a baby it may be perceived as inappropriate. A breast does not have to be viewed as a sexual object.

When I choose to feed

my eight month old in public I do it to nourish him, not to make “a stupid point”. I will not stay home or go into the washroom to feed him because I’m not doing anything of which I should be ashamed. By choosing to breastfeed in public I’m caring for my baby and also setting an example of what healthy womanhood can look like. Which when it comes right down to it, is perhaps the best reason of all for breastfeeding in public.

Thank-you for your time.

Editor:Re: Feedback, Observer, March 20.Once again, Mary Glassford has chosen

to misrepresent the process for decision-making on the Arena Project.

In her letter to the editor she claims that the Arena Steering Group of the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee had effectively made a decision to locate the arena on the current Arena 1 site and that I asked the Steering Group how we should “spin” this decision to the user groups.

This claim is patently false. Mary is reporting second-hand information and, once again, spreading disinformation that does not serve the interests of the community. The Arena Steering Group is not a decision-making body, no decision was made about the arena location in advance of the public meeting of the full NCJPC, and there was absolutely no discussion of how to “spin” anything.

That word was never used by any member of the Steering Group.

As a former politician Mary is free to espouse her views on whatever subjects she wishes, as she correctly points out. I was not suggesting otherwise. What I was addressing was the fact that she is choosing to deliberately misrepresent the process for advancing the arena project, something she continued to do in her letter to the editor.

The NCJPC is a public body that makes its decisions in public meetings. The public decision it made was to continue with its plans to build the new arena on the separate stand-alone location as proposed in the referendum. Mary Glassford’s conspiracy theories about “spin” and back room decision-making are simply not helping us to advance this important community project.

Career Advice.Just one of the reasons to like LocalWorkBC.ca on Facebook.

/localwork-bc @localworkbc

ANNIE GALLANTObserver Reporter

When Chad Dunn graduated from high school in 1998, he really didn’t have a x on what career was best for him. Looking to remedy

that, Dunn went to see a job counsellor and top of the list was pest control.

“I asked them what that was,” he said with a smile. After learning as much as he could about pest control

and pest elimination, Dunn set about acquiring the pre-requisite for a pest elimination future. (Pest elimination is the total elimination of the invasive bug whereas pest control just keeps the critters at bay).

“The rst thing was passing the permit test for pesticide application,” he said.

“And the second was to secure a job in the industry.”Orkin in Prince George hired him and provided a

three-month training period. The company taught him the basics of entomology,

why certain bugs are in certain areas, learning the habits of pests and identi cation of what type of pest you’re facing were some of the many aspects to pest elimination.

“I love my job because it makes people more comfortable in their homes and businesses,” he said.

After one and half years with Orkin, Dunn moved to the Lower Mainland, hoping to gain experience in areas not offered through Orkin.

“I always wanted to run my own business but was determined to be as knowledgeable as possible before I did that,” he said.

Knowing Quesnel needed a pest elimination expert, Dunn was happy to return to town where he was born and raised.

In May 2014, he opened his business Nuk’em Pest Elimination and serviced about 40 clients, mostly residential, in the rst year.

Among the most common pests in the North Cariboo are wasps who establish nests in attics, crawl spaces and anywhere they can invade.

“They’ll use available materials to make their nests including drywall, insulation, any paper products and they love cardboard boxes,” Dunn said.

“There’s no limit to the size these nests can achieve. They will return to a successful nest site and can attach new nests to the old ones. They are particularly attracted to warm, east-facing locations.”

Recently, Dunn was called to a local school where a rather large nest was established in a crawl space.

“The nest had grown to a size that was resting on the furnace ductwork and the humming could be heard in the classroom closest to that area,” he said.

“They knew where the wasps were coming in and out and that’s where I ooded the area with a residual insecticide (this product is safe once it’s dried) but that was just the beginning.”

It would take two days to kill the nest of about 15,000 wasps.

Experience has taught Dunn when dealing with wasps its most important to remain calm and move slowly. He said wasps can sense agitation and that is interpreted as aggression which triggers an attack. Several students at the school had already been stung.

“In the 15 years I’ve been in the business I’ve never been stung once.”

Dunn entered the crawl space and with his ashlight illuminated wasps walking on the nest and ying in the con ned area.

“All I could hear at that point was the humming which sounded like electricity in the ductwork.”

He explained that all ying, stinging insects have guards who patrol the perimeter and those are the bugs you go for rst.

Dunn was packing all the equipment and supplies he’d need to win the war on this particular nest.

“I reached for my pyrethrin fog aerosol which kills on contact, which eliminated the guards and about a quarter of the wasps in the nest and in the crawl space. The next morning I was able to move closer to the nest and realized just how massive it was – about four feet high and three feet across.”

He proceeded to ll the nest’s entrance holes and poked holes at the areas he could reach with his aerosol fog and that killed the balance of the nest including the four queens who resided in the nest and hundreds of eggs.

A shop vac and garbage bags nished the job. With the nest gone and the residual left on the

entrance, Dunn said there was virtually no chance it would re-establish which made parents, students and staff very happy.

Wasps are just one of the many species Dunn can take care of and he added that huge nest in the school was only the second-largest in his career so far. He’s especially adept at irradiating bedbugs, bats and mice but, other than large carnivores, says there’s nothing he won’t tackle.

He also carries a large variety of products for purchase for preventative items for small application elimination such as ies, mosquitos and wasps but recommends whatever product the public purchases they must read the label thoroughly before usage.

Dunn also said they offer discreet service for those requiring it.

At the end of the year, Nuk’em Pest Elimination decided to donate to a local charity the equivalent of about two per cent of the year’s business. Last year they made a modest donation to the Canadian Cancer Society and look forward to larger donations as the business grows.

When you buy fresh flowers, you help save lives and support people living with cancer in our communities.

The daffodil is a symbol of strength and courage in the fight against cancer.

To some, the daffodil is just a flower. For us, it is a symbol of strength and courage. It says we will not give up. It says we will fight against cancer and we will win.

The Society has fresh cut daffodils available for purchase and delivery to your workplace or home by pre-order. The Canadian Cancer Society will be selling flowers March 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

There will be three locations: West Park Mall, Extra Foods and

Downtown Liquor Store.

If you would like to buy fresh cut flowers, they are $5 a bunch and there are 10 flowers per bunch. When you buy flowers, you’re supporting Canadians living with cancer and helping us fund research to fight all cancers for all Canadians in all communities.

Since the 1950s, bright yellow daffodils have arrived in communities across Canada to mark the beginning of Daffodil Month. Money raised through flower sales helps local patients living with cancer and their families and funds life-saving research, support services and other important work that means fewer Canadians will be touched by the disease.

It is estimated that smoking is responsible for 30 per

cent of all cancer deaths in Canada and it remains the leading cause of lung cancer in Canadians. The more you smoke and the longer you smoke, the more you increase your risk of developing lung cancer. In fact, any smoking at all may cause lung damage over time. Quitting isn’t easy but it’s worth it. Within 10 years of quitting, an ex-smoker’s overall risk of dying from lung cancer is cut in half.

If you stop smoking your body will immediately start to cleanse itself of tobacco poisons. Oxygen levels in your blood increase and carbon monoxide levels drop

within eight hours, your sense of smell and taste begin to improve after two days, coughing, sinus congestion and the tiredness and shortness of breath improve within six months. What’s more, your risk of a smoking-related heart attack is reduced by half after one year.

Recently, the British House of Commons approved final regulations

for plain packaging for tobacco products. The law will come into effect on May 20, 2016.

With plain packaging, all tobacco company logos, colours, graphics and promotional features are banned but health warnings remain. Special package formats, such as super-slim packages targeting women, are also banned.

Britain is the third country to bring in this type of legislation. Australia implemented plain packaging in 2012. In Ireland, legislation was signed by the Irish president on March 10 and it will come into force on May 20, 2016. France and New Zealand are in the process of adopting

legislation, while Norway, Finland and Sweden are formally considering the measure.

The single best thing you can do to improve your health is to quit smoking and the Canadian Cancer Society can help. The Smokers’ Helpline is a free confidential service that can help you develop a quit program, provide tips to deal with cravings and withdrawal symptoms and refer you to support services in your community. Visit quitnow.ca or call at 1-877-455-2233. Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The youngest great grandchild, Ryker. Bea and Jack came to Quesnel in 1949, then bought a farm on Hold Road, Kersley, in 1951. They have lived in their home at the top of Dragon Lake hill since 1967. Bea recalls when they were able to make a number of trips throughout the province. She volunteered with vari-ous organizations but notably the Canadian Cancer Society for 41 years. When Bea was first approached to take it on, the job was only supposed to be for a year but she finally turned in her key in 2009. She also headed up Cubs in the Scouting program in 1950. Jack volunteered with the Kangaroos Hockey team for 33 years and Quesnel Millionaires for 25 years. He was employed by School District 28 for 22 years. One of the highlights Bea recalls some time ago was when a couple of Japanese women visited them in their home for a couple of days. For years Bea regularly corresponded with her friend whose husband worked at Cariboo Pulp. Her friend from Shiroai spoke Japanese but her daughter accompanied her as an interpreter. Both Jack and Bea have health issues – Jack had open heart surgery a little over a year ago and Bea is battling cancer. She will be 90 on May 24 and laughs when she tells of trying to teach Jack how to cook. He will be 94 on Sept. 25.

PLAN NUMBER 2-3-703HANDSOME TWO STOREY HOME

On the façade of this three-bedroom family home, two-storey stone pillars support an exposed open truss above the front deck, adding character to the exterior. The home’s covered entrance, on the ground floor, is highlighted by the dramatic sweep of semi-circular steps to the front door, leading to a good-sized foyer, which includes a bench and a coat cupboard. To the right of the foyer, an irregular-shaped den is fitted with a built-in desk. Useful for homework or any paper work, this desk could be the ideal place for the family computer. Behind the den is the laundry room and beyond that, an unfinished basement area that includes roughed-in plumbing for a bathroom. This will make it easy to add an extra bathroom for a suite, if local bylaws allow. A bench by the front door and a coat cupboard complete the foyer area and a door provides ac-cess to the two-car garage. The stairs to the second level lead directly into the expansive family area. The great room, located at the front of the house, includes a gas fireplace that will also be enjoyed from the kitchen and dining room. An entertain-ment unit on one side of the fireplace provides a location for stereo and DVD accessories. A door from the great room opens to the front deck, which also enjoys access from the master suite. The dining room includes an optional buffet and is immediately adjacent to the large kitchen, which is sure to be appreciated by the cooks in the family. The kitchen’s central island will be useful for the additional working and storage space it provides, and this one also features a two-sided eating bar. There’s plenty of countertop space, as well as pantry. A window over the double sink opens up the view across the sundeck to the back garden. A door from the kitchen provides access to the deck, spacious enough for al fresco meals during the summer months. In the sleeping wing, the master suite is located at the front of the home, with access to the covered front deck -- a feature that will be much enjoyed by the homeowners, who are sure to enjoy stepping out to this attractive indoor/outdoor space. Bedrooms two and three overlook the back garden and share a three-piece bathroom. The home measures 43 feet, 8 inches wide and 43 feet, 4 inches deep, for a total of 1,299 square feet of finished living space.Plans for design 2-3-703 are available for $625 (set of 5), $710(set of 8) and $778 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 47TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling).
