Parish Council Activities

At the April meeting of the Parish Council a petition was presented to theCouncil asking for a footpath to be created along the bottom of Grove Laneto make it feel safer to walk along, particularly for children. The petitionwas signed by 188 people, the Parish Council is considering ways ofspeeding up progress on this matter. Letters have been written to theCounty Council about this and meetings have been held with officers to tryand take this issue forward. It has been difficult to bring the different partsof the County Council together to find a workablesolution but with the help of our County Councillor, Alison Thomas, thingsare finally moving forward. Updates will be submitted to Parish Councilmeetings and the Quarterly.

South Norfolk Council along with the other members of the GreaterNorwich Development Partnership have submitted their planningpolicy document to 2026 for approval. Specific sites will beconsidered later in the year, details to follow.

The fact that the rubbish bins at the play area on Chestnut Road werenot being emptied, was brought to the attention of the ParishCouncil. These have now been added to South Norfolk Council’sStreet Cleansing Crews list to be emptied on a regular basis.

The Parish Council would like to remind residents to parkconsiderately. Please bear in mind that it is considered a trafficoffence to obstruct driveways and footpaths or to park anywherewhere your vehicle causes danger to other road users includingpedestrians. In addition please avoid parking in turning circles wheredoing so inconveniences other motorists by making it difficult forthem to turn round. Please park your vehicle responsibly by usingyour own driveways or allocated parking areas where applicable andask any visitors to your address to do the same.

Once again the issue of dog fouling has been raised, South NorfolkCouncil have the power to prosecute individuals who allow their dogsto foul in public places, if you would like to report dog fouling pleasecontact them on 01508 533830.

Tasburgh Parish Council – Burrfeld Park

Since the winter a lot has happened at Burrfeld Park.

The volunteer day planned for 10th January had to be cancelled – wedidn’t think we would be able to make much impact in the snow, butwe had two very useful days on 7th February and 13th March.

On Sunday 7th March about 20 people gathered together to clear thesite some more and plant about eighty native trees. These trees wereobtained free from an organisation called e-forests, who organisecarbon off-setting for companies. Companies pay money to e-forests,who buy the trees and give them to organisations like ours, who dothe work of planting them in public places. Everybody’s happy!

We have planted an area of thirty hazel trees. Over the coming years, these will be coppiced, say every six years, to keep the trees to amanageable size and allow wildlife to thrive.

A range of other native trees were also planted, including hawthorn, blackthorn, spindle, guelder rose and alder buckthorn.

Another volunteer day was held on 13th March, when six native appletrees were planted to form the orchard close to the centre of the site. The apple trees are all Norfolk varieties as follows:

Norfolk Beauty – Fruit is large and pale yellow with a slight red flush. It cooks to a creamy puree with a sweet flavour. Ripens in October.

Norfolk Beefing – Large fruit with a dark green skin with a purple/redflush. Used as a cooker in early season or kept to eat in spring.Famous for making 'Biffins' where they are slow cooked in a breadoven. Ripens in October but will keep to April.

Norfolk Royal Russet – Attractive fruit with a mottled red and russeteffect, really good flavour. Ripens in September.

Red Falstaff – One of the best garden apples, self fertile and a goodpollinator. The fruit is aromatic and juicy. Picked in early October thefruit will keep until March.

Page 7: Quarterly Summer 2010

7

Tasburgh Parish Council – Burrfeld Park

St Magdelen – Pale yellow with a reddish flush. Flesh cream, firm andsweet. Ripens in November.

Adams Pearmain – a yellow flushed variety with red stripes; aromaticwith a nutty flavour; firm. Ripens October to November.

Planting the apple trees turned out to be rather difficult, since everyhole we dug involved a battle with the gravel and flints in the groundand then the holes quickly filled up with water. However, weeventually found sites for six holes and each tree is carefullyprotected from rabbits and deer. The fruit will be available for all ofus to enjoy!

Some areas of wildflowers have also been planted and these aresurrounded by fencing to allow them to become established beforethe rabbits devour them as an interesting variation to their usual diet.

While the rabbits keep the grass short to some extent, the ParishCouncil has arranged for the regular mowing of parts of the site forthe summer months. In addition, small amounts of spraying will becarried out to keep the weed growth under control. Spraying will bewith glyphosate which is absorbed through the leaves of the weeds itmakes contact with and will not affect the trees we have planted. Thespraying will be carried out by a licensed contractor to allow adiversity of plants to flourish, rather than allowing the site to be dom-inated by nettles and dock.

Spring has now arrived at Burrfeld Park and new growth is takinghold. The apple trees are already in blossom and a range of floweringplants are adding colour to the site. Improvements will continue to becarried out over coming years. In the mean time, enjoy the area as aplace for a gentle stroll, or brisk walk, or apple scrumping!

None of this would have been possible without the support of ourhardy group of volunteers, so here’s a big thank you to all.

Tasburgh VillageCricket

Sunday 4th JulyWhere does the time go? Just over 10 years ago Bridget Greensittand Jerry Watts sat in the old Social Club reminiscing about theprevious year’s hugely successful millennium celebrations, wonder-ing if such an event could ever be recreated. After an evening ofdiscussion, fuelled by alcohol, they agreed that a cricket matchwould give the village the opportunity to come together and havesome fun. And so, the first Sunday in July 2001 saw the first everTasburgh Village Cricket match, we had a great day, raised somemoney for charity and Lower Tasburgh won the Alison WallerMemorial Trophy. And here we are, looking forward to the 10th an-nual TVC match. The match is still on the first Sunday in July (4th),we shall still be raising money for charity – Quidenham Hospice andLower Tasburgh will win the Kenny Read Memorial Trophy (OK –maybe Lower Tasburgh will win the trophy).

Although, Tasburgh Village Cricket is independent of any usergroup, we would like to thank the Village Hall Committee for allow-ing us the use of the hall and field for the last 10 years and Tas-burgh Social Club who have ‘served’ us so well by providing barfacilities on the day. Sincere thanks also to Ivan Cooper at AngliaPeugeot for his sponsorship – he has supported us since day one. Ifany other user group would like to join us on the day to raiseawareness or funds for their group – please contact either Bridget(471537) or Jerry (471305).

The score in ‘The Series’ is currently 5-4 to Lower Tasburgh so itpromises to be a good match. Bennetts Electrical have promisedsomething special for our 10th anniversary raffle so watch the vil-lage notice boards nearer the time for full details.

Our BBQ will start at 12 noon with the match starting at 2pm.

Enjoy a break from the World Cup – come and watch the Cricket !

Recreation for All

Tasburgh Community Festival ReportBy Tony Lacey (the man with the mic!)

The rain stayed away and the sun shone for most of the day asmore than 500 people enjoyed the first Tasburgh CommunityFestival.

Kick starting the event, literally, were those two Norwich Citylegends, Craig Fleming and Darren Huckerby who took part in apenalty shoot-out with several local children.

After that the first band, Undercover, got things kicking with anelectrifying set to start 9 hours of live music in a special marquee.

It was great to see people of all ages enjoying the free events, some travelling from the furthest reaches of South Norfolk andbeyond!

Almost all of the Village Hall grounds were filled with various sideshows, trade stalls and demonstrations. The flying display of owlsand falcons was particularly well received as was the perennialfavourite, Punch & Judy.

Recreation For All, who had organised the day, were particularlykeen to ensure that the event reflected the wealth of local talent.Local producers supplyed everything from the barbeque meat, tolocal breweries supplying (and donating!) the ale for the SocialClub’s Beer Festival and of course all of the local companies whoprovided sponsorship.

All-in-all it was a true community event! A big pat on the back to allof those involved in organising and running the Festival and to all ofyou that attended and made it worthwhile.

The day raised just under £3,500 which is true testament to thededication of those involved.

Here’s to Festival 2011!

Well we did it! After all the disruption and dramas we had in the buildup to this production, we were able, not only to complete ourrehearsals and set up the stage, but put on a show we were allthoroughly proud of, and from what we heard from our audiences, you enjoyed it too. ‘Allo ‘Allo was a great script and very funny, butstretched the group to the limits. In true Tasburgh Players style, all ofthe cast worked together and did credit to the parts.

But it was not all due to the cast. Everyone worked well setting thestage, and we must thank Brian Mackie for his unbelievable abilitiesto do absolutely anything straight away. Front of house, technicalcrew and behind the scenes personnel all pulled together, a real teameffort. Even the packing away session went like clock work on theSunday and we now have both containers full to the brim!

We are now planning our next show, ‘Wonders of the West End’ amedley of songs from West End, to be performed from Wednesday8th through to Saturday 11th September.Paul Blake has had apresentation evening on the 4th May and many of the cast are onboard. Rehearsals will start soon. Tickets will be £8, with £7consessions on Wednesday and Thursday evenings available from .

Our quiz and chips evening on the 27th March was a good nightenjoyed by all with four teams in contention until the last round. Wemay have another quiz in October.

At last the weather seems to be improving and after-school clubs, which needed to function outside, are now up and running.

The ‘Friends’ organised a Valentine’s Disco on the 12th Februarywhich replaced the Christmas Disco that had beencancelled in December due to bad weather.

Swimming sessions started again this term for years 3 & 4 and 5 & 6,with a one off session for children in year 2.

Monday 1st to Wednesday 3rd March was years 5 & 6 residential tripto Holt Hall. This was a very successful and enjoyable trip, althoughthe whole school seemed to be missing the older children.

From Monday 8th to Wednesday 10th March years 3 & 4 had theirresidential trip to Horstead. The children were once againcomplimented on their behaviour. We are always very pleased andproud of the comments we get about the behaviour of our children.

Gardening club started again on 16th March and we are now theproud possessors of a greenhouse to propagate our seeds.

Friends of the school organised a Bingo Night in the school on March19th with Easter Egg prizes. This was a night enjoyed by all.

Cycle to school week began on 22nd March. The cycle racks were filledto overflowing.

On Thursday 25th March the children excelled themselves at theSpring Concert. It was difficult to find a space in the hall as everyonehad been eagerly looking forward to this and it certainly did notdisappoint.

On Monday 29th March four children from year 6 competed in aRotary Club event at Harleston Primary and obtained a creditable 2nd

place. They now qualify for the next round of the competition againstteams from Suffolk later this term.

A group of girls from Year 6 organised an Easter Egg competition andraised £30 for charity. There were a lot interesting entries and prizes

for the best.

The school broke up for Easter on 1st April with an Assembly at thechurch led by Chris Martin and Adrian Miller. Children in Years 5 and6 acted out the Last Supper and everyone had a chance to sampleRoast lamb, eggs and salads and to try the unleavened bread thatthey had made themselves at school a few days earlier.

On Thursday 29th April a parent came into school to talk to Receptionand Year 1 bringing with him his collection of bird and animal sculls. The children were very keen to guess which creatures they belongedto and learned from their teeth whether they were herbivores orcarnivores. They asked a lot of questions and were very interested inthe porpoise scull which contained its blow hole

From 5th - 7th May was Science week when the school investigatedcereals. Classes were open for parents to see what the children weredoing. There were a variety of experiments to see.

A Coffee Morning on 6th May for parents to join Mrs Payne for aninformal chat raised some interesting topics and ideas. Moreinformation on these later.

On 7th May the whole village was notified of a celebration event tomark our goal of the purchase of a defibrillator for the community. The children have been raising money, helped by the Parish Counciland local businesses, for the past two years. The East AngliaParamedics team came to demonstrate the equipment. At themoment the defibrillator is being held at the school until a safe andaccessible place can be found to keep it elsewhere in Tasburgh.

In September the school will be holding an Arts and Crafts fortnight. We would like to welcome anyone in the village that has painting orcraft skills, whether professional, or as a hobby that would beprepared to work with a small group of children during these weeks. Please telephone the Head Teacher, Mrs Payne on 01508 270454 ifyou would like to help.

It's been a fun and interesting term at playgroup, with the childrenenjoying getting outside as much as possible. They have been givingus their ideas and suggestions towards our aims of improving theoutdoor play space – only slight hitch was that they expected all thenew equipment to materialise the next day!

We're pleased to welcome a student onto the team - Emma joined uson the 10th May to support a couple of sessions a week and isalready proving to be very popular with the children.

It's very pleasing that we have good numbers of children at playgroupand we're looking forward to joining up with toddlers for our summerouting to Playbarn on 23rd June.

Plenty more planned for the coming term, with our older childrenhaving the opportunity to attend some settling in sessions at school, plus plenty of fun and play ahead.

Remember the paper skip will continue to operate on the secondSaturday, every other month the next couple of dates are July 10thand September 11th. Please bring your paper, cardboard, envelopes, shredded paper etc down to the village hall between 8.30am and11.30am.

Many thanks,

It is an inspiration of mine, to gather together and create some-thing memorable and impressive that celebrates life in Tasburgh2010. The idea is for members of the community from the young-est to the oldest and from every walk in life, not just women butmen to, to create squares that will be joined together decorativelyand become a historical treasure of this time. Once complete it willhopefully be able to be displayed as a wall hanging.

It would be fantastic if all the groups that meet within thiscommunity were represented, including the school, preschool, church and parish council, social club and post office. But equally ifindividuals represented their road or smaller clubs or evengroups/friendships or people who provide services to others thiswould be great too.

The whole thing from beginning to end should reflect our greatcommunity here, which I myself, and I know many others, havefound to be one of the most friendly places to live. But as in anycommunity in 2010 the question “who is my neighbour?” is a veryreasonable one with demanding lifestyles as they are. We oftendon’t know those closest to us and live very separate lives. Myhope is like all the good things that build up the community inTasburgh this project will also break down some barriers. Fromother quilts that have been made this has been the case, as it sortof grows by itself whilst one tells another and encourages someoneelse to join in.

You cannot have failed to have noticed that we can see the fullsplendour of our church for the first time in several months!

Now the lime mortar repairs have settled we have been given the allclear to ring the bells again after, what is it, nearly 3 years. But wehave been asked to treat them gently and not to shake the tower toomuch too soon, and as such we will not be ringing every week at thisstage.

We did ring on the 4th May, and were able to produce some soundswe were proud of. I think we were all nervous and had forgotten how“light” the bells are compared to Tharston, so ringing was more of achallenge than it will be as we get used to them again. We hope to dothem justice as we are told they are among the best ring of 5 in theCounty.

On Sunday 15th August there will be a special celebration of the bells andcompletion of the tower repairs, which will see a quarter peal of bells start-ing at 5.30pm, followed by a short Evensong at 6.30pm .

If you would like to learn to ring or come along to see what it’s allabout, please contact me on 471198. Ringers are in short supplythroughout the area, and we rely on ringers from neighbouringvillages to help so we are spread thinly. It would be nice to ring ourbells with a team from Tasburgh.

Tasburgh Mum, Frances Webster, is launching Kiddy Cook Norwich, running cookery classes and parties for 2-11 year olds. Frances hasbeen living in Tasburgh for four years and has been inspired by heryoung family to set up Kiddy Cook.

Kiddy Cook workshops for 4-11 year olds, teach the young chefsabout good food and exploing new flavours. The monthly Saturdaymorning and holiday sessions will be held from Frances’ home onChurch Hill. The 2.5 hour classes are themed (eg Easter Extravangza,The Orient, Bella Italia and Bread) and the children will leave with thedishes they have made.

Frances includes the younger ones too. Cookie Tots is a new andunique class for 2-4 year olds. The kids come with their parents / car-ers to make simple recipes and enjoy games and musical activitiesbased around food. Classes are held in Poringland, Cringleford andTaverham (free trial sessions are available).

Children leave every session with the food they have made and arecipe card to cook their tasty treats again at home. They get a greatsense of achievement sharing their creations with family and friends.

Well, here I am, sitting at my kitchen table planning and typing theCountry Notes again. How the months seem to pass so quickly isalways a mystery to me. The last time I wrote I was having a bit of adig at all those people I had encountered who were moaning aboutthe winter we were enduring. In my defence, I did say I was lookingforward to a bit of sunshine and I readily admit that I am now onlytoo glad to be able to take a walk around the village without the hat, gloves, scarf and coat that were so necessary for more than a coupleof months.

Walks around the village have been all the more impressive thisspring, almost as if Mother Nature has been making up for lost time. The banks and verges have been full of violets (including white ones),snowdrops and daffodils – primroses have also been abundant andnow the beautiful hawthorn is beginning to blossom. The bleatinglambs only add to the idyllic scene and with the sun on my back it ishardly surprising that I have been reaching for the seed trays andtidying the greenhouse in anticipation of salads to come.

By the time you read this early summer will be in full swing and withit, hopefully, the return of our beloved housemartins. They havenested on a number of properties along our road ever since thehouses were built. This fascinates me as I have been told that therewere no houses here before. How did the birds know that the housesthey cling to and the soil that they build their nests from would makesuch a suitable des res? It is always a joy to watch them when theyreturn as they seem to ‘club together’ to carry out any necessaryrepair work before pairing up and settling down to the task of raisingtheir young.

East Anglia offers us a huge variety of things to do outside during thesummer months. The North Norfolk coast has a number of spotswhich are ideal for rock pooling, an activity you are never too old toappreciate! There is something truly enchanting about peering downinto an entire world that has been encapsulated in such a tiny wateryspace. The RSPB hosts Dawn Chorus walks and the nature reserves atTitchwell in Norfolk and Minsmere in Suffolk afford the best possibleopportunities to spot kingfishers. Closer to home, indeed in our ownback gardens, we can spot moths, dragonflies and even bats given theright weather conditions.

Walks around lovely Burrfeld Park offer the perfect resting point onthe daily village power walk and I urge you to visit whenever you can.It is a wonderful space, constantly evolving. Try and record any wild-life you see as requested by Angela Collins in the last Quarterly to addto the species list. We are truly blessed to have such an up andcoming area right in the heart of our village.

However you choose to spend the glorious weeks of summer, I hopethat you will be blessed with daily doses of sunshine and refreshingand life-giving showers – overnight of course!
