“The Grimaldi Group, its
directors and employees
and the Grimaldi family
would like to spend a few words
in memory of the Chief Editor of
this magazine, Giovanni Paci, who
suddenly passed away at the end of
last month.
Giovanni was one of the world’s
most-respected shipping and finan-
cial journalists. His knowledge of the shipping sector, his brightness and
depth in analysing shipping and economic information, data, scenarios and
trends were coupled with his outstanding ethical principles, passion, gen-
erosity and a remarkable sense of independence.
For more than a dozen years we enjoyed a unique working relationship
with Giovanni. He edited this magazine, the Grimaldi News (as well as our
onboard magazine Grimaldi Mare Nostrum), from the very beginning and
he made of it an excellent publication informing a large public of readers on
the policies, services and achievements of the Grimaldi Group and updat-
ing them on the state-of-the-art of the Ro-Ro and Ferry business.
Giovanni also acted as a moderator at many of our annual conventions
and presentations. He had a natural talent in enhancing the participation of
our outstanding speakers and panellists with his intelligent and informed
questions due to a deep understanding of the wide range of industries our
guests generally belong to.
His advice was always sought before important announcements and com-
munications were made by our Group.
Giovanni’s skills and professionalism were exceptional but we appreciated
no less his fine qualities as a person.
We will all miss him.”
Goodbye Giovanni

On the 12th of September, the ceremony of launch
of the multipurpose ro/ro vessel Grande Sene-
gal, ordered by the Grimaldi Group, took place
at the Uljanik shipyard of Pula (Croatia).
Godmother of the vessel was Mrs Sady, wife to the Chief
Executive Officer of the Autonomous Port Authority of
Dakar Mr. Bara Sady, main port of Senegal, the nation
after which the vessel is named. Among others, a high
level delegation of Senegalese authorities participated
at the ceremony.
With a length of 210.92 metres, a width of 32.26 metres,
a gross tonnage of 47,300 tonnes and a service speed of
21 knots, the Grande Senegal has an ideal cargo intake
of 2,000 cars/vans, 2,000 linear metres of rolling cargo
and 800 Teu, and it is designed to offer the maximum of
f lexibility in terms of intake capacity and type of cargo
loaded. The height of its main decks allows the loading
of heavy and out of gauge rolling equipment such as
trucks, tractors, double-deck buses, big earthmoving
equipment, etc. The vessel’s sophisticated system of in-
ternal ramps, fixed and hoistable, optimizes the cargo
mix while its quarter stern ramp allows the loading of
cargo units with a weight of up to 250 tonnes. Its two
cranes on the weather deck are able to lift units (contain-
ers and general cargo) with a weight of up to 40 tonnes.
“The Grimaldi Group has a long term commitment
towards Senegal”, said the joint managing director
Gianluca Grimaldi while speaking to the guests gath-
ered at the ceremony. “We started serving Dakar 20
years ago with only one monthly call, and now this port
is the Atlantic “hub” of our deep sea network with about
220 calls expected for 2009 and a total of 146 people
employed”.
The Grande Senegal is the fourth in a series of seven
sister vessels orders by the Group to Uljanik, and will
be delivered in December to strengthen the Group’s
regular services linking North Europe to Central/West
Africa.

“Cruise Europa”, the newly
built vessel of Minoan Lines,
a Grimaldi Group company,
has been presented in a series of cer-
emonies in the ports of Patras, Igoumen-
itsa and Ancona last 15 and 16 October.
The“Cruise Europa” is the third of a new
generation of ro/pax vessels ordered by
the Group and the first to be employed
in the Adriatic Sea. This new cruise fer-
ry is slightly different from the first two
units, the “Cruise Roma” and “Cruise
Barcelona”, which operate on the Civi-
tavecchia-Porto Torres-Barcelona route,
due to a higher loading capacity and a
further significant improvement in terms
of design and comfort.
The delivery ceremonies, held in Patras
and Igoumenitsa on the 15th of October,
were attended by representatives of the
local authorities, the top management of
the local Port authorities, Minoan Lines
chairman Emanuele Grimaldi, the man-
aging director Antonis Maniadakis, cus-
tomers, suppliers, representatives of the
media and many other guests. In Patras,
Antonis Maniadakis offered a religious
icon of St. Nicholas to the Master of the
vessel Francesco Ortino. In Ancona,
Corrado Antonini and Giuseppe Bono,
respectively, president and managing
director of Fincantieri, were also pres-
ent together with representatives of the
Ancona Port Authority and the local au-
thorities.
The “Cruise Europa” has become the
flagship of Minoan Lines’ f leet. With the
introduction of this unit on the Ancona-
Igoumenitsa-Patras route, the loading ca-
pacity for rolling freight and passengers
increases significantly.
The new cruise ferry has a 54,310 GT, a
length of 225 metres, a width of 31 me-
tres and a service speed of 28 knots. The
loading capacity is 3,000 linear metres of
coaches, trucks, campers and trailers, as
well as 250 passenger cars. Furthermore,
the “Cruise Europa” is able to accom-
modate up to 3,000 passengers in 413
cabins, 18 of which Owner’s suites and
50 Junior suites, plus 542 reclining seats.
Like the two sisterships delivered in 2008,
the “Cruise Europa” offers onboard ser-
vices similar to those of a cruise vessel:
an à la carte and a self service restaurant,
what is considered the best onboard
casino, a boutique and a supermarket,
various snack corners, two lounges for

ming pool and a gym, a fully equipped
sauna and a suntan centre, an internet
café, a rich variety of videogames and
a children’s playground, a discotheque
are among the various amenities of-
fered onboard.
The “Cruise Europa” was also designed
to comply with environmental and en-
ergy saving standards. By transporting
hundred of trucks and passengers ev-
ery day on the Ancona-Igoumenitsa-Pa-
tras route, she will contribute to reduce
road congestion, CO2 emissions and
accidents. To further emphasize its valu-
able ecofriendly features, the “Cruise
Europa” is “Green Star” certified by the
Italian ship classification society RINA,
which identifies ships designed, built
and operated to ensure maximum re-
spect of the environment thanks to the
Clean Air and Clean Sea notations.
All cruise ferry units ordered by the
Grimaldi Group to Fincantieri have

The Grimaldi Group was awarded
the first edition of the Lloyd’s List
Global Awards in the “Cruise &
Ferry” category, a recognition conceived
by the daily London newspaper Lloyd’s
List and aiming at enhancing excellence
in the maritime sector.
The Grimaldi Group operates in the
passenger ferry sector through three
brands: Grimaldi Lines (operating West
Mediterranean routes), Minoan Lines
(operating in the Adriatic and Aegean
Seas) and Finnlines (operating Baltic Sea
routes); the italian Group was chosen as
the best global company for 2009 among
different operators in the cruise and pas-
senger ferry sectors by a jury made of
ten top personalities in the maritime
world, among which the Secretary Gen-
eral of the International Maritime Organi-
sation (IMO) Efthimios Mitropoulos. The
jury awarded the Group for the invest-
ments made and the results obtained in
the passenger sector, both in domestic
and international routes.
In 2008, the Group has been particularly
active, investing over 300 million euros
to build the two biggest cruise ferries
of the Mediterranean- the sisterships
Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona- and
completed the acquisition of the major-
ity share holding of Minoan Lines, a
company listed on the Athens Stock Ex-
change and leader on the Adriatic routes
between Italy and Greece and between
Crete and Piraeus. In 2009, the Group
opened ten new passengers routes in the
Mediterranean, strengthened its control-
ling participation in Finnlines, a company
leader in ro/pax maritime transport be-
tween Finland, Poland, Germany, Swe-
den and Russia, and continued investing
in new cruise ferries for Minoan Lines.
The ceremony took place in London last
8th September during a gala at the Royal
Lancaster Hotel. “The Lloyd’s List Global
Awards aim at recognising the elite in the
global maritime industry in terms of busi-
ness performance, initiatives and dedi-
cation” underlined Lloyd’s List Director,
Tom Leander.
“It is an outstanding result for our Group-
noted Emanuele Grimaldi, co-managing
director of the Group-. “We are honoured
that our investment policy to develop an
European wide maritime transport for
passengers with a “low cost philosophy”
based on the comfort ensured by the top
quality of the new generation of Cruise
Ferries receives this award”.

A 80 million Euros financing agree-
ment was signed on the 2nd of Octo-
ber between the European Investment
Bank (EIB) and Grimaldi Compagnia di
Navigazione, in order to finance the fleet
expansion of the italian shipping group.
It is the second tranche of an overall
credit line of Euro 250 million granted
by the EIB last year to Grimaldi Group.
The aim of the operation is the purchase
of the vessel “Cruise Europa”, built by
Fincantieri, deployed on the Adriatic
route between Greece and Italy. Ac-
cording to the EIB this investment is in
line with the Commission’s policy of
promoting the motorways of the sea
in the Mediterranean, the freight and
passenger maritime lines alternative to
road and air routes. Less pollution and
beneficial effects on direct and indirect
employment, especially in Southern Italy,
are aspects of the EIB’s financing policy.
The total investment of Euro 250 million
is aimed to cofinance four Cruise Ferry
vessels with an approximate total value
of Euro 580 million; the first tranche of
Euro 81 million, granted one year ago
through UniCredit Corporate banking,
financed the acquisition of the “Cruise
Barcelona”, in September 2008 between
Civitavecchia and Barcelona. This is the
first direct tranche signed between EIB
and Grimaldi Group. Cruise ferry ves-
sels built for Grimaldi, are the largest
freight/passenger ships ever used in the
Mediterranean: their loading capacity is
2,140 passengers and 3,600 lane metres
of rolling cargo; these vessels are envi-
romentally friendly, since they release
in the atmosphere up to 40% less CO2
emissions than a road or plane trip.
Atlantic Container Line helped to
build the second terminal at Dub-
lin Airport by transporting 19 passen-
ger boarding bridges along with their
component parts. Dublin Airport’s Euro
395 million construction began in June
and will continue through October 2009.
The units are 21m long, 3.7m wide x
3.7m high and weigh 28 tons each, and
were transported by road from Utah to
the U.S. port of Portsmouth (Virginia);
then ACL transported the bridges from
Portsmouth to Liverpool, England. The
passenger bridges were lashed and se-
cured onto 60’ roll trailers and towed di-
rectly onto one of “Atlantic Cartier” three
main RORO decks, via her 420 metric ton
capacity stern ramp for its transatlantic
voyage. The component parts were load-
ed onto ACL 42’ f latbeds. Upon arrival at
Liverpool, the passenger bridges were
quickly discharged and transferred by
crane, from the vessel’s mafis to 60’ rear
wheel steering trucks and driven to Dub-
lin Airport which is amongst the 10 busi-
est airports in Europe. The component
cargo was left intact on the 42’ f latbeds
and never rehandled on delivery to the
airport site.
Euro 80 millions from EIB aimed at fleet expansion
ACL ships airport terminal“The Lloyd’s List Global Award received
in such difficult category which includes
also cruise operators, is a further stimu-
lus to continue improving a sustainable
passenger maritime transport, both in
economic and environmental terms”-
Grimaldi continued-. “After radically
improving maritime transport between
Italy and Spain with the introduction, in
2008, of the sisterships Cruise Roma
and Cruise Barcelona on the Civita-
vecchia-Barcelona route, we will do the
same on the Adriatic routes, where Mi-
noan Lines is due to launch the Cruise
Europa, able to accomodate 3,000 pas-
sengers and more than 3,000 linear me-
tres of buses, campers and trucks, as
well as 250 passenger cars”.

ELEctric gEnErator to a windfarm nEar VaLEncia
An electric generator has been shipped from Salerno and destinated to
the windfarm located near Valencia.
Due to the heavy weight, it was loaded with two trucks: a standard truck
hooked to the trailer used to manoeuver and push the unit in front of the
ramp, while the other one, a special truck having about 600 hp, was hooked
behind the trailer, in order to supply more power during the ramp crossing.
Loading operation took about 50’ (from vehicles positioned in front of the
ramp up to lashed onboard). Another two electric generators with same
dimensions and weight should be loaded during next year.
Special shipments throughout the world90 tons LocomotiVE on grandE francia
A brand new locomotive Alstom was shipped from Antwerp to Casablanca
in August 2009. This is the first unit of a consignment of 20 brand new
locomotives to be shipped on the same route between August 2009 and May
2010. The locomotive weighed 90 tonnes and measured 19 metres, was lifted
with the AET terminal Gottwald crane from the train rails onto a brand new 18
meter mafitrailer on which 2 solid steel plates have been welded to support the
vehicles weight, contrated on the bogies.

In August 2009 a heavy lift transport was shipped from Hamburg to Brazil. The proj-
ect cargo destined to a petrol-chemical factory consisted of total 3,600 cbm plant
components which were loaded by mobile crane on board M/V “Grande Buenos
Aires”. The cargo arrived at Hamburg with a truck of Messrs. Profreight-Logistic-
Group specially designed for the transport of heavy lift cargo. One of the tasks the
heavy lift experts had to meet was the transport of a tail gas drum of 78.2 tons weight
in XXL format with 36.52 m length, 4.43 m width and 4.43 m height. The transporting
truck unit totaled 72 meters. The weight of about 200 tons had to be separated onto
22 axles for on-road transport. This heavy lift transport called for strongest security
was assisted by department 2 of Hamburg harbour police.

Three truck trailer combinations of Alfacam, loaded with state of
the art mobile High definition film studio’s and camera equip-
ment, have been loaded from Antwerp to Lagos (Nigeria). These
equipments will be used to cover the FIFA U-17 World Champion-
ship football for 17 year old players held in Nigeria from October

Italian music “on air” by sea
Ten 16-meter trucks, loaded with stage
and music equipment for Laura Pausini’s tour, has been shipped on the m/v Finnmill from Salerno to Cagliari, destinated to the concert of the famous Ital-ian singer, held in Sardinia at the end of July. The same truck was loaded from Catania to Malta, for another of Laura Pausini’s tour concert.
Special advertising
Some trailers belonging to important short sea clients were covered with advertisements of
the Grimaldi Group: the tarpaulins, sponsoring the Group’s motorways of the sea network, depicted a big image of the m/v Cruise Barcelona.
Grimaldi team Malta wins Trofeo città di Cesaro
Grimaldi Team Malta driver Alan Curmi won this year’s edition of the Trofeo Citta di Cesaro, held in Sicily last August. Five
Maltese drivers and cars made the trip on the Grimaldi ferry, headed as always by Team manager Joe Anastasi. These consisted of three single seater racing cars for Patrick Gauci, Alan Curmi and current ICC hill climb champion Joshua Anastasi, and two saloons driven by Nikolai Degiorgio and Etienne Grech. At the presentation of awards after the event the Grimaldi Team Malta contingent was singled out for its sportsmanship and team spirit, and of course for the outstand-ing performance of their well prepared cars. “These are the sort of compliments I like to hear” said team manager Joe Anastasi. “It’s the sort of encouragement that makes one go on, despite the many difficulties. I am delighted with the behaviour and performance of all our boys, and very proud to be managing such an excellent Grimaldi Team Malta.”
Minoan loads valuable antique cars
Even if Minoan Lines usually carries about 300.000 cars per year, twenty-nine of the automobiles parked in the garage of H/S/F Olym-
pia Palace last September had something very special: they happened to be some of the oldest and finest cars one may see in the street. The explanation was the Bugatti Antique Rally that this year took place in Greece from September 26 until October 4. Minoan Lines, member of the Grimaldi Group, was their carrier of choice. On September 26, twenty-nine antique cars, mainly of the Bugatti brand, were embarked on board the H/S/F Olympia Palace at the port of Ancona, Italy. Their destination was the port of Igoumenitsa in Western mainland Greece in order to start their tour entitled “Essence of Greece”. The oldest of the cars partici-pating in the Rally were manufactured almost 100 years ago under the brand launched by the Bugatti family whose members are remembered until today for being ingenious designers and acute engineers. Obviously, special concern was taken for their loading as these automobiles, rare collectors’ pieces, sell for more than 200,000 Euros apiece.
