Flu/ColdInformation:Influenza (the flu) is a serious illness. Symptoms can include sore throat, headache, fever, cough, nasal congestion/sneezing, fatigue, muscle/body achesandweakness. Childrenmay also feel nauseated, vomit or have diarrhea. Coldsymptoms are very similar to flu symptoms, however theprimary differencebetweenacoldandthefluisthattheflucomesonverysuddenlywhereaswithacoldyoursymptomsoftencomeongradually.Ifyoususpectthateitheryou or a loved onehas the flu, it is important to seek amedical evaluation forproperdiagnosisandtreatment.
Transmission:Thefluandcoldarebothcausedbyviruses, andbotharetypicallyspreadviadroplet transmission.Thismeans thatwhenpeople thatare infectedwith the flu or cold virus and they are coughing and sneezing, they releasedroplets into theair that canbe inhaledbyotherpeoplewhocan thenbecomeinfected. When someone coughsor sneezes, thedroplets that theyexpel into the air can travelup to20 feet atspeedsof25-50milesperhour.Thesedropletscanalsostaysuspendedintheairforhours.
You can also get the flu from contaminated surfaces (for example - doorknobs, faucets, telephones). When youtouch a contaminated surface and then touch your face, this allows the virus to enter your nose ormouth andtransmititself.Keepinmindthatvirusescanliveonsurfacesforupto24hours.
Treatment for the flu includes increasing water intake, potential antiviral medication (if diagnosed within 48hours of onset) and plenty of rest. Antibiotics are ineffective against the flu and are sometimes prescribed topreventasecondaryinfectionrelatedtoacoldvirus.Beforeusingoverthecountercoldorflutreatments,pleaseconsultwithyourmedicalprovider.

MASKS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL STUDENTS, STAFF AND VISITORS
On August 4, 2021, Governor Pritzker mandated that all individuals within Illinois school buildings must wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status. As a result, masks must be worn by all students, staff, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status, while inside D214 facilities.
January 1, 2022 Dear Parent/Guardian, Immunization Requirement for the 2022-2023 School Year: For the 2022-2023 school year, all students entering 12th grade shall show proof of having received two doses of MENINGOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE (Menactra, Menveo, MCV4) prior to starting school. The first dose should have been administered on or after their 11th birthday and the second dose on or after their 16th birthday. An interval of at least eight weeks between the first and second dose is required. Only one dose of the vaccine is required if the first dose is administered when the child is 16 years of age or older. You do not have to wait until your child is going into 12th grade to get the 2nd dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine - once your child turns 16 years-old they are eligible to receive it. Your child may have already received both doses of the required Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine, however we may not have received proof that they were given. Please check with your child’s medical provider to determine if they received the two Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccines and, if they were given, please ask that they complete all information indicated below, including their signature and office stamp. If your child has not received both doses, you are required to get this vaccination for your child or your child will be subject to exclusion as described in the school code of Illinois. Your child will not be able to receive their class schedule or attend school in August until all immunizations are up to date. Please submit this completed form or an updated immunization record to the Health Office at Elk Grove High School as soon as possible. Sincerely, Morgan Vogel R.N., B.S.N.

“Our communities are going to thrive (with the help of the
Promise Program). We’re going to attract good jobs, we’re going to attract businesses. I appreciate the collective commitment to what
this is going to do to strengthen the entire region. It’s a really
big deal long term.”
—Arne Duncan former U.S. Secretary of Education
During their Freshman year of high school 34,357 students
have made the initial commitmentto their Promise Scholarship.

A SCHOLARSHIP OFFERED TO EVERY ELIGIBLE PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT IN THE HARPER COLLEGE DISTRICT THAT WOULD FUND UP TO TWO YEARS OF COLLEGE.
What if we could promise every public high school student in the
northwest suburbs an associate degree tuition free if they’re
willing to earn it? Think of the possibilities for students, parents
and our local workforce. An associate degree. Tuition free.
Under the Harper College Promise Scholarship Program every
eligible incoming public high school student in Harper’s district
can earn an associate degree* at Harper College if they maintain
solid grades, have good attendance, don’t repeat classes,
graduate on time and provide service to their community.
*Students can earn up to 60 credits of tuition inclusive of dual credit, AP credit and other prior credits earned. As of 2021, more than $2.1 million in scholarship tuition has been administered to Promise students.

The student can continue to attend Harper College tuition-free, semester by semester, for up to four semesters (for a total of 60 credit hours inclusive of dual credit, AP credit or prior college credits earned before enrolling at Harper.)† , if the student meets the following criteria.

semester. (minimum 15 credit hours)
√ A student must attend each consecutive semester (fall/spring) until their certificate or degree is completed –– up to four semesters.
√ Summer session tuition is not included in the program.
COMMUNITY SERVICEService requirements must be performed through a Harper-related program.
The criteria for the Harper College Promise Scholarship were developed by Harper College, area public high schools and northwest suburban business leaders to promote life skills and habits that will help students succeed in college and provide businesses with smart, skilled and motivated employees. The Promise Scholarship Program enables participating students to attend Harper without having to pay tuition† while they earn career certifications and associate degrees. However, signing up for the Promise program does not commit a student to go to Harper. So there’s no reason not to sign up!
IN HIGH SCHOOLThe Program starts in the second semester of a student’s freshman year in high school. If the student meets attendance, rigor, quality, persistence and community service requirements, the student can earn up to two years tuition at Harper College.
