Quality Assurance in PakistanQuality Assurance in Pakistan94 percent of institutions in the United States had

assessment activities under way and 90 percent had increased their activities compared to TEN years ago. Rather than depending on nationally available assessment instruments, most institutions (86 percent) reported using local measures and nearly 70 percent were developing their own portfolios.

In Pakistan 130 Universities; including Public and Private Sector Universities have started Self Assessment Programme for the various degrees awarded by the Universities.

Page 13: Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) & Self Assessment Programme (SAP) University of Karachi Prof. M. Sajidin Director, Quality Enhancement Cell, University.

Internal Quality AssuranceInternal Quality AssuranceInternal Quality Assurance refers to those policies and practices whereby academic institutions themselves monitor and improve the quality of their education provision.

13

Page 14: Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) & Self Assessment Programme (SAP) University of Karachi Prof. M. Sajidin Director, Quality Enhancement Cell, University.

External Quality AssuranceExternal Quality AssuranceExternal Quality Assurance refers to supra-institutional

policies and practices whereby the quality of higher education institutions and programmes are assured. Individual universities have always possessed policies and practices designed to assure through external evaluators the quality of education, but academic institutions have also always operated within a national policy framework. Designed by the state to assure academic standards.

External Quality Assurance is a more intensified system that have accompanied recent reforms in national policies and issues they raise for higher education.
