Roughly 2,800 persons entitled to asylum or recognised as re- fugees from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq, Iran, Sri Lanka and Syria aged between 18 and 69 were surveyed nationwide in writing in the BAMF Study on Refugees 2014. It is particularly the countries of origin Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria which are relevant in the current refugee immigration. The brief analysis is hence focussed on respondents from these coun- tries. The majority of them are aged under 35, are male, and filed their first asylum application between 2007 and 2012. Roughly 70 % of all the respondents attended a school for bet- ween five and 14 years. Approximately 13 % can be categorised as “unskilled” if one regards schooling and formal vocational training together, whilst just over 10 % can be regarded as “higher-skilled”. Women and respondents from Iraq have a relatively poor educational position. Men from Iraq nonetheless manage to achieve better labour market participation than other origin groups. Somewhat more than one-third of all the individuals surveyed in the study are in gainful employment. Refugee women only take part in the German labour market to a very slight degree, and much more rarely than men. The activities carried out focus on several sectors and occupa- tions, and are very largely situated at a low to medium level of qualifications. This is compared with a high level of motivation among refugees with regard to participating in the labour mar- ket. Very many of the respondents would also like to remain in Ger- many in the long term, and large numbers of them would also like to take on German nationality. Refugees frequently also ex- press wishes with regard to vocation and training, and would like to found or reunify a family and live in peace and security.
