Restaurant reduces labor costs in black iron pipe gas line installation with Viega MegaPress ® Black iron, also known as black steel, is a common pipe material in the industry, especially for use in gas lines. The traditional method for joining black iron pipe is threading, which requires heavy equipment, messy cutting oils and bulky wrenches to use for manual tightening of joints. With the advent of press technology, other manufacturers have created press fittings for use with black iron systems in order to eliminate the uncertainty and frustration in joining black iron pipe. However, in many instances, these fittings are rated only for hydronic applications and not gas. But Viega MegaPress is different. Viega MegaPress is the only carbon steel press fitting engineered for installation in water and gas applications. Bryan Kenny, President of B&B Mechanical Services in Cincinnati, OH, first heard about the Viega pipe joining systems in 2010, through their local wholesaler. Kenny and B&B started installing Viega ProPress systems for water applications but when they got the job installing a gas line in a Quaker Steak & Lube ® restaurant, their wholesaler suggested something different: Viega MegaPress. “I think it’s a very good concept,” Kenny said. “It’s very labor friendly. It doesn’t take quite as long. It worked fantastic.” B&B Mechanical Services installed Viega MegaPressG fittings in sizes 1 1 / 2" and 2" for the gas line at the new Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant in Florence, KY. According to Kenny, the timeline for the project was aggressive. “One of the reasons we used it was because we were under the gun,” Kenny said. “In talking to our sales rep, he told us we could save some time. We decided we’d try it and it worked wonderfully.” Founded in 1974 in Pennsylvania, Quaker Steak & Lube began as a means to preserve the heritage of old-fashioned gas stations and high-powered muscle cars. With the rising cost of gasoline, many gas stations were closing and George “Jig” Warren III and Gary “Moe” Meszaros decided to create a cook-your-own-steak restaurant that provided old muscle cars a permanent home. Today, The Lube ® , as it is called by its fans, serves more than 80 million wings in a year, sells bottled sauces and holds the title of CUSTOMER: Quaker Steak & Lube Restaurant APPLICATION: Gas lines LOCATION: Florence, KY CONTRACTOR: B&B Mechanical Services One of the reasons we used it was because we were under the gun.
