It doesn’t take quite as long. It worked fantastic.” B&B Mechanical Services installed Viega MegaPressG fittings in sizes 1 1 / 2" and 2" for the gas line at the new Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant in Florence, KY. Black iron, also known as black steel, is a common pipe material in the industry, especially for use in gas lines. The traditional method for joining black iron pipe is threading, which requires heavy equipment, messy cutting oils and bulky wrenches to use for manual tightening of joints.

With the advent of press technology, other manufacturers have created press ttings for use with black iron systems in order to eliminate the uncertainty and frustration in joining black iron pipe.

However, in many instances, these ttings are rated only for hydronic applications and not gas. But Viega MegaPress is different. Viega MegaPress is the only carbon steel press tting engineered for installation in water and gas applications.

Bryan Kenny, President of B&B Mechanical Services in Cincinnati, OH, rst heard about the Viega pipe joining systems in 2010, through their local wholesaler. Kenny and B&B started installing Viega ProPress systems for water applications but when they got the job installing a gas line in a Quaker Steak & Lube® restaurant, their wholesaler suggested something different: Viega MegaPress.

“I think it’s a very good concept,” Kenny said. “It’s very labor friendly. It doesn’t take quite as long. It worked fantastic.”

B&B Mechanical Services installed Viega MegaPressG ttings in sizes 11⁄2" and 2" for the gas line at the new Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant in Florence, KY. According to Kenny, the timeline for the project was aggressive.

“One of the reasons we used it was because we were under the gun,” Kenny said. “In talking to our sales rep, he told us we could save some time. We decided we’d try it and it worked wonderfully.”

Founded in 1974 in Pennsylvania, Quaker Steak & Lube began as a means to preserve the heritage of old-fashioned gas stations and high-powered muscle cars. With the rising cost of gasoline, many gas stations were closing and George “Jig” Warren III and Gary “Moe” Meszaros decided to create a cook-your-own-steak restaurant that provided old muscle cars a permanent home.

“Best Wings USA” throughout its almost 60 US locations. The Lube still rescues muscle cars, vintage cars, trucks and a vast selection of custom and antique motorcycles, displaying them on the walls and ceilings in each restaurant.

“It’s the fastest-growing motorsports-themed casual dining restaurant out there,” said Jim Mills, Vice President of Operations for Quaker Steak & Lube. “There’s nothing like it in the country. When you’ve got Corvettes and motorcycles hanging from the ceiling, people get so excited and it creates a fun atmosphere. We’re a family restaurant that caters to a lot of different folks.”

Unlike the rst restaurants that were renovated from abandoned gas stations, The Lube in Florence, KY, is new construction. With 11,000 square feet, it has three bars, an outside patio bar and 48 at-screen televisions. The restaurant seats more than 400 guests.

“We have a lot of great food,” Mills said. “We do a great job with the baby back ribs and feature signature menu items with our award-winning sauces. Uncommon from most restaurants, we do events like a bike night with 1,000 to 1,500 motorcycles on site and music in the parking lot. Tuesdays are all-you-can-eat wings. There’s always something going on at The Lube. I think the restaurant turned out great.”

Kenny was pleased to report that his crew’s part of the installation nished on time and that they saved at least 40 hours on labor during the project. He credits Viega MegaPress as the reason they saved so much time.

“It’s a good product,” Kenny said. “The labor hours it saves are well worth it.”

With the Viega MegaPress system, installers and engineers have the opportunity to select a pipe tting solution from a single source. In IPS sizes 1⁄2" to 2", Viega MegaPress ttings can be installed with Schedule 5 to Schedule 40 black iron pipe.

“Really I would almost consider it leak proof,” Kenny said. “It’s kind of like Viega ProPress®. We’ve used that for the past three years and we’ve not had a leak yet. I was a little skeptical at rst but it did great. No problems. I’ve always had a good experience with Viega.”
