Hong Kong ICT Awards is a technology-related award organised by the Ofce of the Government Chief Information Ofcer. The Awards are aimed at recognising and promoting outstanding information and communications technology inventions and applications, thereby encouraging innovation and excellence among Hong Kong’s ICT talents and enterprises. The awards are divided into eight categories. The QTSA “QPoint” app, developed in partnership with Cherrypicks and the Hong Kong Productivity Council, has won the Smart Tourism Silver Award in the Smart Mobility Award category.
Through the app, merchants can deliver location-based Q+ offers and personal discount to customers using Starbeacon technology. The award shows not only that this technology has been recognised by the industry, but also that QTSA’s efforts to develop smart tourism initiatives to attract tourists and locals to patronise Quality Tourism Services (QTS) Scheme-accredited shops and restaurants are bearing fruit.
QTSA cooperated with Wofoo Leaders' Network for the rst time to launch a WLN x “QPoint” Business Case Competition. Students have the opportunity to learn how a mobile app works and what resources are needed. Besides a cash award, the winning team has the opportunity to work with Quality Tourism Services (QTS) Scheme-accredited merchants and even shadow a company's management for a day so as to experience management job duties.
In order to increase students' understanding of the competition, QTSA held a brieng seminar on 4 March at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Haking Wong). During the seminar, some successful examples of online marketing and sales skills were shared so students can grasp the key points of the competition. The participating students formed teams and presented their proposal to QTSA and Wofoo Leaders' Network on 30 March. The three nalists were announced on 4 April.

As a prime destination, Hong Kong is visited by more and more tourists from around the globe; thus giving merchants access to a wide range of foreign currencies. At the same time, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority also introduced new banknote designs in 2018 and 2019. QTSA invited the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Commercial Crime Bureau and Counterfeit and Forgery Division of the Hong Kong Police Force to present a seminar on the identication of counterfeit banknotes at the HKMA on 12 March.
The seminar covered the security features of the new Hong Kong Dollar, Renminbi and US Dollar. Participants were able to handle counterfeit banknotes rsthand and learn how to tell the fake from the real. The QTSA hopes the industry will benet from the seminar as the participants will be better prepared to identify counterfeit banknotes and avoid any nancial losses.

Comments from the Legislative Council Member, Wholesale and Retail Functional Constituency
The Hon Peter Shiu
Greater Bay Area development:Hong Kong to become a tourism hub
The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was unveiled last February after long discussions, marking a new chapter in the cooperation among Hong Kong, Macao, and the nine Pearl River Delta municipalities. In particular, the Plan identifies Hong Kong, Macao, Guangzhou and Shenzhen as the four main cities of the Area, acting as the core engine for regional development. Thus, Hong Kong is expected to perform as one of the hubs in the area, bringing in more people and business opportunities for various sectors like tourism and retails.
Without a doubt, the Greater Bay Area, with its population of more than 60 million people outside Hong Kong, is a market with enormous potential, eight times the size of our city. Even though the Area accounts for less than 1% of China’s territory and about 5% of our country's total population, its GDP comes to about US$1,600 billion, or roughly 15% of the national GDP. The Area’s economy exceeds countries like South Korea and Australia. We can only imagine the purchasing power of the people there and opportunities offered by the Area.
In the middle of last year, given the uncertainty brought on by the US-China trade war and weak RMB exchange rate, the number of visitors and retail sales figures in Hong Kong went down for a while. Thanks to the Express Rail Link and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge that commenced its service in the 4th quarter, the figures have been slowly recovering. It obviously shows the importance of cross-border transportation to local tourism and the retail industry.
The Plan supports Hong Kong becoming an international tourism hub and acting as a core demonstration zone for multi-destination tourism. With the advantages of cross-border infrastructure – as long as the authorities expedite planned measures such as introducing more convenient customs clearance at the ports of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and increasing the number of entry and exit self-service channels for passengers, among others – I believe it would encourage people living in the Area and tourists travelling around the Area, to come to Hong Kong, bringing more sources of customer and economic benefits to the city.

Follow the lead of Hongkongers and make a party out of an ancient Chinese festival under the modern skyline of Victoria Harbour. Enjoy boats, beers and the cheers of hundreds of thousands of spectators — it’s the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival.
Every year, thousands of the world’s top dragon boat athletes battle it out at the CCB (Asia) Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races — three days of intense racing that ll the harbour with heart-pounding action, a profusion of colour and the sounds of drummers and fans cheering paddlers on to the nish line.
To make your summer experience an unforgettable one, the carnival will also feature a tantalising man-made beach and a fun-lled splash area for locals and visitors alike to soak up the sun in the heart of the city centre. A scrumptious Street Food Gala will serve an array of local and international bites, as well as signature dishes from food trucks. Another addition to the event is the Artisanal Market, showcasing creative talents from local artists and craftsmen. This year, the QTSA will continue to support this mega event by inviting members and industry representatives to participate in the “Milk Tea Trophy” race.

According to government statistics, the sales volume in the jewellery category increased 10%; however, infected by the US-China trade war as well as the depreciation of Renminbi, the overall future retail atmosphere is still not positive. Ms Nancy Wong, Executive Director and Deputy Chief Executive Ofcer of Lukfook Group maintains a prudent outlook on business development. As the middle-class population is expected to rise considerably in Mainland China, the Group remains optimistic about the mid-to-long-term business prospects. In response to the challenging environment, Lukfook Group will actively enhance their products’ added value and introduce new product lines that cater to market needs to increase protability. Such products include the “Dear Q” Collection which allows customers to create unique pieces of jewellery and the “Goldstyle” Collection which features techniques that double the hardness of gold, with a view to improving protability.
As the Hong Kong Section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge commenced operation in 2018, visitor arrivals from Mainland China has increased. In order to provide convenience to customers, Lukfook Jewellery has shops located in popular tourist and shopping areas such as Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Jordan and Sheung Shui and will keep identifying potential locations for branch stores. As early as 1994, Lukfook Group has entered the mainland market. With over 1,740 shops in Mainland China, Lukfook Jewellery has rolled out various marketing campaigns to promote the brand, for example, by placing advertisements on online video platforms and launching joint promotions with mobile game producers to enhance brand awareness among customers in China. With the aim of targeting the Mainland Chinese visitors, Lukfook Jewellery has placed advertisements in major ports and collaborated with WeChat Pay, Alipay and UnionPay credit cards to attract visitors.
Along with rapid technological development, mobile electronic promotion platforms have become more mature. Lukfook Jewellery has participated in the activities on the “QPoint” app, and endeavors to attract the participation of more visitors by offering e-coupons and organising festive and interactive games during Chinese New Year on the platform. Ms Wong hopes to understand customers’ needs via this app with location-based marketing tool to collect and analyze the user data for merchants and to help merchants distinguish customer types and offer more relevant promotions according to personal preferences and habits, so as to attract potential customers from Mainland China and Hong Kong, as well as to expand the customer base and boost sales volume.
For its part, QTSA will continue to promote “QPoint” and “QPoint” merchants through the mega events organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board. Ms Wong hopes this will help stimulate tourists and locals’ participation and consumption and enhance their awareness of the Lukfook brand.

Founded in 1999, Treasure Lake Catering Holdings Limited (Treasure Lake) is now in second decades, providing quality Cantonese cuisine and services to tourists and locals alike. Known as a food paradise, Hong Kong has a number of Chinese restaurant brands. Treasure Lake adheres to the spirit of "customer rst" and "Serve customers with heart" by listening to customers' opinions, catering to their needs and constantly improving dishes. Moreover, because Treasure Lake uses fresh ingredients, adapts professional cooking methods and offers dishes at affordable prices, each customer can enjoy a memorable Cantonese meal.
Mr Henry Au, Executive Director of Treasure Lake Catering Holdings Limited, points out that the company is now expanding into the Macau market and opening new branches there. Treasure Lake has always adopted the policy of innovation to meet the needs of the market. The chain has established fast food and snack shops to maintain their competitive advantage and cater the needs of different customer groups in recent years. Treasure Lake has also started a new brand - "Treasure Lake Green Food Kitchen" – selling products that are 100 percent made in Hong Kong, such as healthy soup pouches and abalone. Mr Au says that Treasure Lake pays much attention to social responsibility by implementing environmental protection policies and participating in voluntary social activities. Treasure Lake has developed an Environmental steam recovery system which won for them the distinction of Catering Industry Group Champion at the Water Supplies Department's "Water Conservation Competition.” Treasure Lake will continue to build a culture of innovation, caring and sharing as well as sustainable development.
Nowadays, technology has developed rapidly and online promotion platforms are becoming more mature. Treasure Lake has recently joined QTSA's "QPoint". Mr Au expects that "QPoint" will strengthen the image of traditional Chinese restaurants and attract more tourists to visit Hong Kong. By using the online promotion platform, merchants can provide coupons to customers so as to increase the company's turnover and visibility. At the same time, Mr Au also hopes to collect the consumption patterns of customers, further understand their needs and provide appropriate catering services to them.
QTSA will continue to promote "QPoint" and "QPoint" merchants in major events which organised by the HKTB in the future. Mr Au hopes that the brand image will be enhanced through these mega events in order to attract different types of merchants to join "QPoint." More merchants offering discounts will surely enhance the consumer’s shopping and dining experience. The New Year game, which was held earlier, has also successfully attracted tourists and locals visit “QPoint” merchants to redeem offers.
