Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

In this significant year of transformation, we have listened to our devoted subscribers, supporters and friends to ensure the role we are playing in the cultural life of the Queensland community is both positive and progressive. We are committed to life-long learning, delivering engaging and inspiring concert experiences, exploring new musical horizons and collaborating with guest artists of the highest international acclaim.

The 2010 season is made up of seven unique and dynamic concert series to delight all music tastes. As you browse through this brochure, you will notice performances with world renowned guest artists including James Morrison, Cheryl Barker and Cyprien Katsaris and celebrations of some of the grandest and most important landmarks in music.

Bare existence requires little more than water and bread, but to flourish we need more. We need a nurturing environment. We need empathy. We need friends. We need to communicate.

As a community, we cannot survive without the arts. Our art is our soul and the complexity of our art reflects our level ofadvancement. It reveals our willingness to open our hearts and minds, and to be challenged.

For me it is the magic of sound, especially that produced by a great orchestra which speaks to me and challenges my mind. An orchestra is a unique harnessing of the energy created by many artists to communicate a unified sentiment in a deeply emotional way. It is passion. It is hope.

With these thoughts I welcome you to the 2010 season and the return of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

The 2010 season promises an unprecedented year of orchestral brilliance, delivering concert experiences to delight all tastes and ages. We introduce four new concert series concepts; Splendour of the Baroque, for enthusiasts of early music; Gala, a series of celebration and variety; Midweek Masterworks, the perfect daytime escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy working week; and 20/21, an exploration of music from the 20th and 21st centuries

We mark this time of revitalisation with the unveiling of a fresh look, presented to you on these pages, and a new name, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. We stand by our promise to touch the hearts and minds of all Queenslanders through music, and invite you to join us. 2010 promises to be an overwhelming and enriching experience you will not forget.

Your State Orchestra’sHISTORY AT A GLANCE

Queensland’s orchestral history dates back to 1871, when violinist R.T. Jefferies arrived in Brisbane with a passion for sharing the exhilaration of live symphonic music. However, it wasn’t until 1947 that Queensland established its own—and Australia’s second—professional symphony orchestra, which was the result of a partnership between the Australian Broadcasting Commission, the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council.

The 45-member Queensland Symphony Orchestra took to the stage for the first time on March 26 1947, performing for 2500 music enthusiasts at the Brisbane City Hall. The performance, featuring guest conductor Percy Code, pianist Eunice Gardiner and works by Wagner, Grieg, Berlioz and Tchaikovsky, marked the beginning of a new era of Queensland music-making. In its first year, theQueensland Symphony Orchestra performed 31 live concerts, and initiated the annual regional tour of North Queensland.

Under inaugural Chief Conductor John Farnsworth Hall and his successor Rudolf Pekárek, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra became Queensland’s flagship performing arts company during the 1950s and 1960s. The calibre of its guest artists from those early decades is remarkable and includes: conductors Otto Klemperer, Sir John Barbirolli, Eugene Goossens, Rafael Kubelik and Walter Susskind; violinists Isaac Stern and Yehudi Menuhin; cellists Mstislav Rostropovich and Jacqueline du Pré and pianists Daniel Barenboim and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

In the early 1970s the Queensland Symphony Orchestra continued to grow toward its eventual size of 71 members and achieved great artistic success under American Chief Conductor Ezra Rachlin. Its subsequent appointment of Patrick Thomas in 1973 (Australia’s first ‘home-grown’ Chief Conductor) led to a bold program and elevated performance standards, along with countless world and Australian premieres of new music.

The mid-1970s saw the Queensland music scene further stimulated with the formation of the Queensland Theatre Orchestra (subsequently the 31-member Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra) under the direction of Georg Tintner. Originally created to supply pit services for operatic and ballet performances, Tintner’s inspired direction resulted in the smaller orchestra beginning to performconcert repertoire as well, while Tintner himself was a regular guest artist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

The Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra achieved renown in the 1990s as a first-class chamber orchestra, and under the direction of then Artistic Advisor, Anthony Camden, attracted high-calibre soloists including James Galway, Pinchas Zukerman and Sir Neville Marriner. It took to the international stage with a tour to Japan in 1991, and a tour across South-East Asia in 1996.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra began to receive international acclaim in the 1980s when the newly appointed Chief Conductor, Werner Andreas Albert, later also the Chief Conductor of the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, involved the Orchestra in international recording projects. The Queensland Symphony’s world-wide attention was enhanced further in the 1990s with the appointment of Maestro Muhai Tang as Chief Conductor, and the Orchestra’s first tour abroad to China.

In 2001, political and financial reasoning led to the amalgamation of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. Australia’s third-largest symphony orchestra, The Queensland Orchestra, was born. While such artistic mergers have often proved fatal elsewhere in the world, The Queensland Orchestra, under its inaugural Chief Conductor Michael Christie survived and flourished. At just 27 Christie was the youngest person to ever hold such a position in Australia. He went on to lead The Queensland Orchestra on a successful tour of Japan in 2002.

In 2008, The Queensland Orchestra welcomed Maestro Johannes Fritzsch to the position of Chief Conductor. Since his appointment, The Queensland Orchestra has engaged audiences of all musical tastes, interests and ages with an extensive state-wide program spanning 47 weeks of the year. The Orchestra has attracted guest artists of celebrated international acclaim including Jose Carreras, Freddy Kempf, Stephen Hough, Mark Kaplan and Piers Lane. Performances of both classical and modern compositions have been described by critics as ‘breathtaking’, ‘impressive’ and ‘exhilarating’.

2009 marked the beginning of a major transformation for The Queensland Orchestra. The appointment of Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Pickett CSM and Director of Artistic Planning, Richard Wenn, sparked the beginning of a process of revitalisation.

And now in 2010, we introduce the new Queensland Symphony Orchestra—your State orchestra.

From the early tone poem Printemps to the Spanish spectacle of Images, Debussy’s music bursts with sensual colours that wash over the listener with an iridescent glow. His deep and poignant poetry is simply incomparable. Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain depicts fragrant scents in the moonlight, sparkling fountains and the exquisite Moorish architecture of the Alhambra. Our impressions of Spain conclude with Ravel’s masterpiece, Bolero, the definitive Spanish fantasy.

Finnish mezzo Lilli Paasikivi is fêted for her rich earthy voice and moving performances of Mahler’s orchestral lieder. To mark the 150th anniversary of Mahler’s birth, we continue our exploration of his music with Rückert’s poignantly beautiful poetry. These lines of text express unbearable loneliness and uncompromising pleas for eternal love. These poems inspired Mahler to write music of great personal depth—music that is at once beautiful and devastating.

From Chopin’s homesickness and pain of exile to the restless spirit of Tchaikovsky’s tortured wanderer, we present a concert of passion and emotion. This homage to Frédéric Chopin, celebrating his 200th anniversary, is performed by legendary piano virtuoso, Cyprien Katsaris.

Tchaikovsky’s Manfred, inspired by Byron’s arch-hero, is an arresting tone poem of epic proportions. It is greater in orchestration and scale than any of his other symphonic works—his ultimate symphonic statement. Conducted by Edvard Tchivzhel, one of the greatest living Russian conductors, this concert is not to be missed.

The Concerto for Orchestra is perhaps the ultimate showpiece of twentieth century orchestral music. With every section and instrument featured, Bartok writes ingenious solos and colourful combinations of the utmost virtuosity. In this one work Bartok struck a chord with audiences and critics alike and since its first performance this brilliant concerto continues to stun.

With the International Horn Symposium in Brisbane, how better to celebrate these princely instruments than with Schumann’s Konzertstück. Some of the greatest horn players in the international community will help us celebrate and honour Schumann on the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Smetana’s Má vlast, a poetic tribute to the legends and beauty of his country, is a Czech national treasure. Two springs, one warm and vivacious, the other cold and woeful, converge to become the river Moldau. From the blind fury of the vengeful Sárka to the sunny fertile meadows of Bohemia, Smetana weaves tales of his homeland.

Das klagende Lied continues the legends and myths of old Bohemia. A magical flute sings of grim deeds, forest secrets and unattainable princesses. In this early masterwork for orchestra, solo voices and choir, the mature Mahler shines through, a vision perfectly realised by the 20 year-old composer.

A London Symphony conjures up the foggy impressionist paintings of Monet and Pissaro, with Dickensian imagery in the background. From his Chelsea eyrie over the Thames the scenery that unfolded before Vaughan Williams at night was not unlike a canvas by Whistler. Vaughan Williams was immersed in early church music when he found Tallis’ 1567 setting of When Rising from my Bed of Death, which he incorporated into his fantasia, with the Norman grandeur of Gloucester Cathedral in mind.

Robert Schumann, born in 1810, was a leader of the Romantics. His Cello Concerto is now one of the best loved in the repertory. Li Wei Qin makes a welcome return for this anniversary performance.

If Mozart’s ornately perfect music depicts minute detail of the valleys and meadows, Bruckner’s scales the heights of the most rugged mountain ranges and thunders out to the world. A primordial journey out of the mist, from the mountain tops to the valleys below.

Zimmermann Ich wandte mich und sah an alles Unrecht, das geschah unter der sonne(And turning then, I saw the great injustice that is done under the heavens)Beethoven Symphony No.9 Choral Zimmermann’s provocative ecclesiastical action with music is based on texts from the Old Testament and Dostoevsky’s hugely influential The Grand Inquisitor from his The Brothers Karamazov. This parable of Biblical verse in oratorio form has been described as a deeply pessimistic artwork. Yet utter despair juxtaposed with Beethoven’s setting of Schiller’s Ode to Joy creates the perfect counterbalance. Liberty, equality and the ideals of the Enlightenment for a universal brotherhood of mankind triumph in Beethoven’s Choral Symphony.

With husband and wife Zhislin and Lomeiko as soloists this promises to be a glorious performance.

Dvo ák paints with bold and dynamic brushstrokes, imparting vitality and verve. The Scherzo Capriccioso is a brilliant orchestral treasure and one of Dvo ák’s most outstandingly successful compositions. Coupled with the infectious dance rhythms and folklore pervading the exciting Symphony No.4, these two works showcase Antonin Dvo ák at his melodic best.

Beethoven Symphony No.1 Mozart Requiem The unique relationship between Mozart and Beethoven is at the heart of this program featuring two of their most beloved works. Under the baton of Werner Andreas Albert we begin with Beethoven’s first symphony which heralded his arrival as a great symphonist and heir to the form. The drama of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus brought to Mozart’s Requiem a popularity that could never have been achieved through the concert hall alone. Now an iconic masterpiece the everlasting light of this beloved Requiem is testament to Mozart’s genius.

Finland Awakes – a magical journey to Karelia

Sibelius The Bard Beethoven Piano Concerto No.1 Mustonen Jehkin Ivana Sibelius Tapiola Sibelius Finlandia Since childhood Olli Mustonen has astounded audiences around the world and is fêted as a composer, pianist and fine conductor. Sibelius and Beethoven are two of the composers with whom he has a special affinity. His amazing fluidity and crispness of touch will be heard to great effect in Beethoven’s Concerto No.1 in this performance directed from the piano. Mustonen’s titanic compatriot Jean Sibelius led the way in the late 1890s in re-establishing Karelian identity for his fellow countrymen. Tapiola, one of his last great works, was written just before a period of personal crisis about his future as an artist in an increasingly alien world. This concert ends in a magnificent burst of nationalistic fervour with Finlandia. With this piece Finland awoke after years of political subjugation, a sudden awakening that eventually led to liberation.

Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch concludes our anniversary tribute to Zwickau’s most famous son with his effervescent Symphony No.1, titled Spring. From the opening bars this symphony bursts full of life and celebrates the joys of Spring. Schumann regarded the premiere of his Symphony No.1 as one of the most important events of his artistic life. Based on a poem by Boettgher, the Spring Symphony depicts daffodils poking their little heads through the snow seeking warm sunshine in the meadows. Leading German pianist Bernd Glemser gives an anniversary performance of the great piano concerto, a work of art that has remained fresh and immediate after all these years—a concerto bathed in sunshine, exceptionally beautiful from beginning to end.

The glories of the Baroque era are normally off limits to a full symphony

orchestra, but not to the experienced early music specialists hidden within

the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. This series, directed by world-

renowned musicologist, conductor and keyboardist Geoffrey Lancaster, is

an exploration into the origins of the French, Italian and German traditions.

From Biber to Bach, Marais to Rameau and Purcell to Vivaldi, Geoffrey

Lancaster and concertmaster Warwick Adeney lead you through the music

of the Baroque period. Join us and find out why these elite Queensland

Symphony Orchestra musicians are often acclaimed as one of the best early

music ensembles in Australia.

Venice was a major centre of Baroque music and renowned as the home of the ‘Red Priest’, Antonio Vivaldi. The influence of the Italians was extensive and changed the course of music from London to Dresden. Concerti by Vivaldi, Albinoni, Marcello and Corelli are just some of the great composers featured in this program of sparkling delights.


The French Influence


Conductor Geoffrey LancasterSoloists from Queensland Symphony OrchestraFrench Influence including Rebel, Rameau, Couperin, Marais, Lully French music, from the Renaissance composer Marin Marais to the giants of the Baroque, has been featured extensively in film and in revivals of grand operas written for Versailles. Rebel led the way in developing dramatic music with his Les éléments, depicting the progress from Chaos to Creation. Rameau and Couperin were renowned for their exquisite dance forms and stylistic inventions, as was Lully with the operatic form. The French influence was a refined pinnacle of the Baroque era.

The three great German masters of the Baroque left an enviable legacy that overshadowed many other luminaries of the age. This program explores various forms of court music from that time, as well as reviving jewels by some of their lesser known but equally fascinating contemporaries.

Vine Celebrare Celeberrime Villa-Lobos Amazonas Vine Symphony No.4.2

Carl Vine is considered one of the greatest and most original Australian composers. Symphony No.4.2, one of his most compelling works, is full of textural and rhythmic contrasts ranging from dominant percussion sections to lush string harmonies.

Villa-Lobos pioneered lush jungle effects in his orchestration and influenced a whole generation of composers including Messiaen. Amazonas conjures up the region and river in a compact tone poem full of colour, light and exotic sounds.

Zender Schubert’s Winterreise, a composed interpretation

Winterreise, a masterpiece from one of the greatest composers in the history of classical music, as reinterpreted through the mind of contemporary German composer Hans Zender, is a tour de force. Zender’s creative depths in this act of homage propel this solitary winter’s journey to increased levels of tension and heightened emotions. This exploration of the text and music by celebrated tenor David Hobson, 24 musicians and sound effects, takes us far from the context of the original composition for voice and piano, yet retains an ultimately Romantic vision in poetry and lyricism.

Exceptional composers imbue their music with the light and textures of their landscapes. Latvian Peteris Vasks instils Baltic light, the Latvian landscape, forests at night, sparkling waters and a freshness in his music. His compositions are very representative of his time, yet reflect centuries of Latvian traditions that survived generations of repression and domination by outside powers. The Cor Anglais Concerto is a sublime work with evocative pastoral elements. Musica Dolorosa is a heartfelt threnody written after the death of Vasks’ sister. This deeply personal work could be said to mirror the painful struggle by the oppressed Latvian people at the point of their overthrow of Soviet domination.

Sir Malcolm Williamson was one of our greatest voices in music. His suite Our Man In Havana is full of contrasts—Cuban rhythms, outrageous colour and dark undercurrents. It remains one of his most acclaimed scores.

Mozart was one of Brahms’ favourite composers, he even owned the manuscript of Mozart’s 40th symphony. This coupling of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Brahms is a glorious combination of two great works. Queensland Symphony Orchestra Principal Clarinettist Irit Silver is showcased in this queen of wind concertos under the baton of Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch. Maestro Fritzsch continues his survey of the great symphonic works of Brahms with the triumphant Second Symphony.

From Enlightenment Vienna to the technological advances of the 21st Century, composers have been breaking the mould—daringly throwing convention out the window. Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro upset censors and overwhelmed his patron with too many notes. Beethoven established a new element of the symphonic form, including a scherzo in his Third Symphony. Berlioz used an enormous orchestra in his Symphony Fantastique, Wagner introduced an intoxicating chord in his Tristan und Isolde, and Schönberg rejected tonality. Join us as we explore these and more exciting and revolutionary works. Hear the music that disgusted and shocked audiences in 1913 Paris—the most riotous of them all, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

In September this year, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra will be heading North—visiting Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. The orchestra will present education concerts in Townsville and Cairns, and will give workshops for students in all tour locations. Students have the chance to take centre stage in this competition, where the top prize is a performance as soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch concludes our anniversary tribute to Zwickau’s most famous son with his effervescent Symphony No.1, titled Spring. From the opening bars this symphony bursts full of life and celebrates the joys of Spring. Schumann regarded the premiere of his Symphony No.1 as one of the most important events of his artistic life. OrchestraThe evolution of a brandCreating a new logo for an organisation is a massive undertaking. How can something so small be expected to encapsulate something as complex and multi-faceted as the largest performing arts company in Queensland? The student designers assigned with this project quickly discovered that the orchestra catered for a wide range of audiences, playing an equally diverse range of music.

The new logo developed for the Queensland Symphony Orchestra is based on the concept of these diverse worlds combining in harmony. The traditional orchestral layout of musicians became the inspiration for the overall shape used to create the symbol. The designer spent many hours researching the history of the orchestra and instrumentation for possible ideas but instantly decided on this direction after hearing a performance at QPAC. These shapes were then coloured with vibrant, dynamic shades familiar with all Queenslanders, as they reflected the palette of the sun.

The modern symbol was complemented with a logotype based on a typeface over 500 years old. The font, Garamond, is symbolic of the range of music, audience and history of the orchestra.

About Liveworm StudioLiveworm is the professional graphic design studio of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. The studio is staffed with selected students in the process of completing their Visual Communication Design degrees. The Queensland Symphony Orchestra logo was created by third year student, Sam Lowth, 2009 graduate.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra is proud to support the Coxen’s Fig Parrot Recovery Project at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. In raising awareness through this community partnership, we contribute to the protection and longevity of this precious and endangered species and its habitat, as well as further improving our eco-footprint and environmental approach to our industry. The Coxen’s Fig Parrot Recovery Project is the longest and most successful National Trust of Queensland Green Guardian Conservation program at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The recovery team was established in 1993, as a result of the declining status of the bird and the continued destruction of prime habitat. The Coxen’s Fig Parrot is a critically endangered species which lives in lowland sub-tropical rainforest and was once found between Bundaberg, Queensland and the Richmond River in New South Wales.

SUBSCRIPTION TICKETS

Queensland Symphony Orchestra authorises QTIX ticketing agency to

process all subscription package applications. In addition to the general

terms and conditions of sale, the following procedures apply to all tickets

sold as part of Subscription packages, including Set and Choose Your Own

series.

Subscription sales open Wednesday 14 October 2009.

Renewing subscribers receive a priority booking period from 9am

Wednesday 14 October 2009 until Friday 27 November 2009.

Subscribers who select the deferred payment option, 50% of your total

order will be processed to your credit card on receipt of your order form, and

the balance of your total order will be processed in January.

Single tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday 11

January 2010.

New subscription bookings will be processed AFTER the allocation of

renewing subscription bookings.

All new bookings are processed in date order of receipt.

Payment by cheque, money order or credit card must accompany your

application.

We can only accept instalments for payments made by credit card.

Subscription tickets may be exchanged for tickets to an alternative

performance up to two working days before a performance. Ticket

exchanges are subject to availability and a ticket exchange fee of $3.30

per ticket applies. You will also be required to pay any seat upgrade costs

that apply. This is calculated as the difference in single ticket cost in your

chosen reserve between your current seat and your chosen new seat.

Set Series subscriptions are available up until the date of the first

performance in any particular series.

Choose Your Own subscriptions are accepted throughout the season until

only four concerts remain.

Seat allocation is subject to availability.
