Times of India, 17th January 2015Runners take note: Poor gait, extra long strides can injure your spine and knee

“A weak or painful back can affect the entire body's stability and

hamper a runner’s performance. Mostly runners focus on improving their running endurance, but they have to be mindful of the fact that while training for a marathon, it’s

critical to make your spine stronger.” said Dr.Garima Anandani of Qi spine

clinic. “Even if the runner’s stride is not in

proportion with his or her body frame, it could affect his or her spine. For the same reason runners should be mindful of how much their arms

swing.” said Dr.Anandani.

It has been found after research that back pain, neck pain and spinal cord problems are result

of poor posture. Staying inactive for a long time can also lead to

spinal disorders.Dr. Tejas Upasana, Dr. Gautam

Shetty and Dr. Garima Anandani of Qi spine clinic have

mentioned a few tips that will help to protect the spine and

keep it fit and pain-free.

Bombay Times, 28th November 2014Are Gadgets Responsible For Your Bad Posture And Back Pain?

There is excessive strain on the spine, explains Dr. Garima

Anandani, chief spine specialist at Qi spine clinic when one is mostly

looking in a forward and downward position at any hand-held mobile

device (mobile phone, video game unit, computer, mp3 player and e-

reader). She says holding your head, which weighs several pounds, at this

angle puts a lot of strain on your neck muscles which aren’t designed

for it. Consider that the average human head weighs 10lbs in a

neutral position. For every inch you tilt your head forward, the pressure

on your spine doubles.

Although there’s no scientific link to prove that humid weather conditions

aggravate back pain, Dr. Gautam Shetty, orthopedic surgeon, Qi spine clinic, says, “Weather doesn’t affect

pain directly, it changes the perception in people, and it’s their anxiety that leads them to believe

that their pain has increased. However, lack of physical activity and reduced exposure to sunlight in the

rainy season may lead to fall in vitamin D levels and cause back pain.

Lack of exercise may aggravate stiffness in joints, especially the back,

in patients with disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing

spondylitis.”

conducted by the healthcare clinic in Mumbai from January 2012 and October 2013 on around 5000 people. “ The self-employed

(business people) were found to be most prone to back pain (41%).

Working professionals followed at 26%, homemakers at 20%, sales

workers and students each at 5% and retired people at 3%.”

In March 2014, Sushant Dabolkar consulted Tanisha Saboo, spine

consultant, Qi spine clinic, Mumbai. After an extensive examination that involved checking his posture and

movements, Dr. Saboo suggested a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A disc bulge was found in his lower back. “This bulge was irritating the surrounding structure, including the nerves, and was responsible for the

pain in his legs. Sushant was diagnosed with a disc protrusion,

commonly called slip disc.” says Dr. Saboo.

Digital Spine Analysis is intended for patients with acute/chronic back pain with or without radiating pain. Back

pain can occur due to lumbago, degenerative disc disease, disc

prolapse, or hyper mobility of the spine. However for issues like active

malignancy, infections, dislocations and fractures etc, a DSA is not applicable.

Mid-day, 7th August 2014Pain kept him away for 4 years, but this 24-yr-old is now back in college

In 2013, Advait Thakur’s family introduced him to a new form of therapy, which

analyses the muscular evaluation of the spine. “MRIs and X-Rays simply locate the problem, but what Advait needed was a functional diagnosis of the spine. It took painful sessions but he finally walked out with very little pain and is now in much better shape.” said Dr.Garima Anandani,

chief spine specialist at Qi spine clinic, who supervised Advait’s treatment.

“We say that smoking is injurious to health, but sedentary lifestyle is even more harmful.”

says Dr. Garima Anandani, chief spine specialist, Qi spine clinic.

She says that simple activities like keeping your feet straight and slouching on your

pillow while watching television, sitting on the settee without a backrest and allowing your feet to dangle cause the back to form the perfect “C” which is the most imperfect

posture for the spine.

Afternoon,22nd July 2014Pain, Pain, Go Away!

Dr.Gautam Shetty, orthopedic surgeon and research director at Qi spine clinic tells us, “Muscle cramps are very common cause of pain and soreness during exercising. The pain usually settles if you rest enough,

stretch the affected part of your body and drink adequate amounts of fluids. If your muscles are worked beyond capacity, it can lead to tears resulting in sustained pain and might also injure your tendons and ligaments, causing significant pain

and disability.” Your body can take anywhere between two weeks and several

months to recover from over-training.
