Natural Production of Betaine HCI

Q. If there is no natural food source for Betaine HCl, how is HCL naturally produced in the body? A. The stomach contains parietal cells that produce hydrochloric acid to chemically break down food. Betaine HCL is a chemical substance made in a laboratory and a supplement taken when there is not enough HCL in the stomach.

Liquids Prior To and During Meals

Q: Is it correct that the recommendation not to drink water during meals implies to also abstain from any other liquids for up to one hour after? Does it make a difference to drink something shortly before the meal?

A: You are correct. You should abstain from drinking any liquids while eating food, as it dilutes your stomach acids and digestive enzymes. And, if you feel like drinking something before eating, wait about 20 minutes to eat.

Reliable Testing for Celiac Disease

Q: I have heard that many blood tests give a false "green light", not detecting celiac disease (or a gluten intolerance) when it is present. Do you recommend a specific test that you have found reliable in your practice? A: Celiac disease triggers immune response in the body and therefore produces certain antibodies. Testing for these particular antibodies is a good indicator, IgAtTG: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) anti-tissue transglutaminase (tTG) antibody and IgAEMA: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) antiendomysial antibody (EMA).

Impact of Fasting on Glycogen

Q. When the body moves from using the fat stores to the protein stores, does that really only happen when all fat is depleted? Or could it be that the person retains body fat but is already using up their protein stores? How would you be able to tell in which phase someone is? A: Yes. During starvation mode, after long periods of low energy intake, once the body has used up all of its fat reserves, then it moves to glycogen reserves in the muscle and liver cells. Between 6-72 hours, Glycogen stores are used up and the body begins to break down fatty acids. After 72 hours of starvation, the body adapts and begins to conserve protein, however during those first 72 hours, that is the body’s greatest loss of protein.

Reintroducing Foods Following Rotation Diet

Q: This is a little off topic but the question keeps coming up for me. In regards to food intolerances we learned that we should eliminate all potential problems foods and re-introduce these quickly. We also learned that it is possible to develop intolerances if we are eating some foods repeatedly. Which foods would you recommend as "safe foods" or diet staples please?

A: There really are no “safe” foods. You should reintroduce foods slowly, one at a time, noticing if any adverse reactions occur before reintroducing another food. Also, any food that you consume in large amounts of for an extended period of time can lead to you having intolerance to that food.

Practicality of the Rotation Diet

Q: Another practical question regarding the rotation diet. If you are not supposed to eat the same foods twice in the period of 4-7 days, how would you recommend to plan effectively, especially if you have a busy work schedule? A lot of "experts" advise the use of remains from the dinner the day before as lunch for the next day. This would not be possible on a rotation diet if I understand correctly. Any tips how to make a rotation diet sustainable in regards to effort and effectiveness? A. The Rotation Diet is excellent if you have food intolerances or sensitivities. It is not hard and fast. It does provide flexibility. For example, it is better to eat something that you are not sensitive/ intolerant two days in a row, than to eat something you are sensitive to. Remember, food should not be something that you stress out about it should be something that is adding life and value!

Length of Each Phase of Detox

Q: How long does each Phase of detox take? How do you know when is enough time has passed that you can safely say you have gone through each phase. A: The answer is that the phases happen simultaneously in your body. There are several mechanisms that work in concert with the phase I, II, and III including cell renewal, organ processes, anti-oxidation, bile secretion and more.

Length of Detox

Q: As we work to create our own detoxes with our clients, what is the best length of time for a cleanse or detox program. I know that doing them throughout the year, especially

with the seasons is good, but if we run programs, how long should those programs be to make sure they get through all of the phases. A: I have found that 30 days is great amount of time to work through the 3 phases of detoxification.

Additional Reading on Detoxification

Q: I don't see any books recommended in the list on detoxification. What other resources or books would be good to gain an even more in-depth look into detoxing and the phases of detox? There are lots of books about detoxing, but you are so correct that everything you read doesn't mention the phases of detoxification. A: Here are some links that have some pretty good information on the 3 phases of detoxification. http://www.lef.org/protocols/metabolic_health/metabolic_detoxification_01.htm And, I like this one because of the visual diagram: http://www.isagenixhealth.net/the-basics-of-detoxification/

Open and Closed System Colonics

Q: You mentioned enemas and I'm not sure if this is what you meant by a forced enema. I'd like to hear more about colonics and if they are good for you or not. I've heard both sides of the coins. It's usually the medical community that doesn't like them, but when you talk to the functional medicine community they tend to like them. I have heard that they disrupt your gut flora, and I've also heard that it does not. I've recently listened to an audio recording from someone who explained a colonic and it so far made the most sense to me, but I'm still confused at if they are good to use or not. Which is better an open or closed system colonics? A: As you can imagine, this is quite a personal question and decision. They are equally effective, just the closed system requires the technician to be in the room with you and participate. I prefer the gravity fed and in this procedure, the technician should always be present in the room.

Bentonite Clay in Detoxing

Q: How do you feel about Bentonite Clay used in detoxing? A: Like everything, it really depends on the person and how they tolerate it. I have found some people tolerate bentonite extremely well, while others do not.

IgG Food Testing

Q: How accurate is IgG Food Testing? I've heard that it is not that accurate and not to rely on it. Do you find them to be accurate? A: IgG is quite accurate for testing food sensitivities and intolerances.

Leaky Gut

Q: Leaky gut was not listed in the list of common digestive issues. I know that some medical doctors don't believe in Leaky gut. How do you feel about leaky gut and what resources do you know of to learn more about it. A: Although leaky gut is not recognized by all of the medical community is recognized and has some strong evidence supporting it. Sadly, the medical community admits that they don’t know enough about the gut, in general. As a result, Leaky Gut is not taught in medical school. Pesticides, heavy metals, radiation, NSAIDS, antibiotics, preservatives, chemicals and things that your body is not accustomed to have led to intestinal permeability.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Heartburn

Q: Gerd, Acid Reflux, increasing stomach acid. How do you feel about using Apple Cider vinegar to increase your stomach acid and help alleviate the "heartburn" symptoms of Gerd and Acid Reflux? A: There is some evidence that Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with water can help some with heartburn, but it really depends on the person.

Rotation Diet

Q: When it comes to using things like hemp seeds in your smoothie. Is it bad to do that daily? I find that is the one thing I definitely like to keep in the diet daily in my smoothies for protein (complete), and so many other benefits. Should I be rotating this too? Or is it just the top allergens you need to rotate. Are there some foods you can eat more often, up to and including daily if they are not highly allergenic? A: If you do not have an issue with food sensitivities or intolerances, than this should not be an issue for you.

Marshmallow Root

Q: You said that you don't like it for detoxing, although you do like it as a digestive herb. Can you give more info about why you like it for digestion but why it's not good for detoxing. I know this is one of the herbs that they say is really good for Interstitual Cystitis. How about the other herbs like Licorice root (as well as that whole list you mentioned) not being good for detoxing. Can you elaborate more about why you don't like them for detoxing? I'm drinking an every day detox (Healthy liver function) herbal tea right now and realized it has licorice root on that list. Is something like this not good to drink as a tea? A: I don’t recommend Marshmallow Root for detoxing because it coats the stomach and doesn’t allow for the absorption of other supplements that one may be taking with it (multivitamin, nutraceutical, etc.). And, drinking an herbal tea should be fine. Tea’s are generally rather light. I want to point that many of the questions ask about food allergies. Food allergies are serious and cause major reactions (swelling/ anaphylaxis) and can cause death. Most people do not have food allergies, but rather have food intolerances or food sensitivities.

Q: I understand from the material, I’ve gotten this far in Science Module 4, that detoxing during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended. I’m currently breastfeeding my 18-month old daughter and plan to continue until she’s two. We’d like to get pregnant again in the fall that would give me a three-month time period between finishing at nursing and trying to conceive. Is this a large enough time period to do a detox? I know this is a pretty specific question. But what would be the most effective things to do during this three-month period to cleanse my body without affecting my fertility? In general, what is the ideal time period to begin and finish a detox or cleanse before trying to get pregnant?

A: There are definitely some things that you can do. But first of all, you are correct that detoxing during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended. The reason is because your body is expelling toxins and will do so in any way. It’ll release those toxins from your body in any way that it can, so through sweat or even through nutritional methods or even through breast milk. So you definitely do not want to pass that on to the little one. So this three month time period between when you finish up and when you decide to start trying to conceive is plenty of time to detox. Whenever you’re ready to do this, I would definitely recommend something like a nutritional cleanse to really jumpstart the process. SoCal Cleanse, obviously, I recommend simply because I know the quality. It’s a 30 day cleanse. And it’s something that’s very gentle and nourishes the body as opposed to depriving it. Three months, again, is plenty of time. You do want to make sure that you have all of those nutrients that you saw for all of the phases of detoxification just to make sure that your body is well supported. You want to make sure that you cut out any processed food with the preservatives in it, any sort of alcohol that you might be consuming. Really, just make sure that you’re eating a super clean diet made of whole foods and no preservatives. Look also at your personal care products, so any sort of body wash that you’re using, deodorant, those types of things. Those, of course, can have some really scary toxins in them that you don’t want in your body when you’re trying to conceive. But three months, again, is plenty of time to do a really nice detox. I would take at least a couple of weeks after nursing to sort of ease into a detox simply by eating clean whole foods again. And then actually use a detox program like SoCal Cleanse for the next 30 days at least. And then from there, of course you’ll have another 45 days or so to continue just cleansing the body and getting rid of any extra toxins and resting, definitely resting. I recommend getting lots of sleep to really repair the body.

Gall Bladder Removal and Detoxing

Q: First question is how does having your gall bladder removed affect the detoxing process? It seems as though it plays an important part.

A: It definitely does. Even though you don’t have a gall bladder, you do still produce bile and you have a bile duct that needs to be cleaned. Many people are actually surprised. I’ve talked to a lot of people that have had their gall bladder removed but their symptoms are still the same. And even after you have that surgery, it’s still necessary to cleanse and detoxify the liver and the gall bladder tract. After your gall bladder has been taken out, then obviously that bile that’s manufactured by the liver can’t be stored there anymore because it doesn’t exist. And so what happens is it drips directly into the small intestine which can create a pretty toxic intestinal condition especially if the bile tends to be very acidic. And that’s actually believed to be one of the reasons why gall bladder removal is linked with a higher incidence of colon cancer. So if you have your gall bladder removed, the health of your liver becomes especially important because they’re very intricately connected. Just a quick, maybe, review, some quick information here, the gall bladder is that storage container for the bile and our liver produces that. So after we eat, our gall bladder produces this concentrated and stored bile into our small intestines where the pancreatic duct then enters our small intestine. And from here, the bile can do lots of things. It’s great for balancing the healthy bacteria. It helps you to digest fat, to destroy any pathogenic organisms, those types of things. But as I said before when your gall bladder is gone, that bile goes directly from your liver to your small intestine that may not seem like a big deal. But your gall bladder, if that’s diseased and you’ve had gall stones or whatever it is that led to your gall bladder surgery, then it might be the case that your liver is not really functioning optimally either. And obviously, as we all know, our liver is super, super important. And when your liver is forced to deal with these very toxic substances, it creates toxic bile that is then, as we know, passed straight into the intestines that can cause a whole host of other things like leaky gut. So now that your gall bladder is gone, it’s even more important to heal and make sure that your liver is supported in a big way through cleansing and detoxification, through different herbs, through eating the right foods. It’s really, really important.

Effects of Detox for Client on Mood Stabilizing Medications

Q: Would detoxing or cleansing be recommended for someone who is on prescribed mood stabilizing medications? My concern would be the possibility of it having a negative effect in the way of, washing the meds out of the system and therefore creating a mental instability.

A: While this can technically happen to some extent, most prescription medications are still absorbed by the body while you’re cleansing. And it’s also important to know that detoxing periodically is actually a really great idea for people who are continuously on medications just to make sure that, again, your body is supported. Your liver is supported and strengthened because that of course your liver is naturally detoxing the body from these medications on a regular basis. It’s a great idea to check with your doctor first. So make sure that you’re always under the care of a doctor if this is your situation if you have these mood stabilizing medications and you want to do a cleanse, very important. We’ve actually had clients who were in the situation, who take SoCal Cleanse to their doctor and say, “This is what I’m going to do. Is this okay?” And so you always want to make sure that your doctor is aware of the situation that it can be very safe. But again, make sure you check with your doctor in your situation.

Possible Detoxing Side Effects

Q: As an FDN practitioner, I found that the detoxing segment is very interesting as we recommend flushing the liver and colon cleanses as a way to enhance progress during the client’s program. This past year, I’ve done two different types of liver flushes. One six weeks and one six days that included intermittent fasting on the last day. And I regularly cleanse with supplements and a whole foods diet. To improve my cleanses this coming year, I have a few questions. During detox and cleansing, some side effects normal as a result of some level of deprivation, changes in your daily food intake, etc. What is a normal level of side effect to experience and manage?”

A: You may have some detoxing side effects. However, they should always be mild and they should not be long lasting. You might experience something like a slight headache or increased bathroom visits but not to an extreme level. You might feel a little bit tired in the first few days of the cleanse simply because your body is shifting and doing a bit of extra work. Outside of that, there should not be a lot of side effects. If there are extreme side effects, that’s your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. So make sure that you’re aware of that because these detox symptoms should not be intense.

Time Period for Three Phases of Detoxification

Q: How long does it take the body to pass through the three phases of detox, a few hours or a few days? What is the expected time lapse between phases? How much time do you need to go from Phase 1 to Phase 2 and beyond? How long should a proper detox be? Is three or seven days too short of a time for all three phases? Or are we looking at 15 to 30 days for all phases? Also, will I know by a body signal when I’m done with one phase and ready for the next one? A: The three phases of detoxification actually carry on simultaneously. So you don’t go from like necessarily a cut off of Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3. You’re not just in one phase at one time. It’s true that you do move from Phase 1 to Phase 2 onto Phase 3, but you can be doing this several times over. They do coexist. So Phase 1 that’s cytochrome P450, onto Phase 2 that is conjugation, and onto Phase 3 which is further metabolism and escorting the toxins out of the body, all happen at the same time. What can sometimes happen is one of the phases might be a little bit faster than the other. So Phase 1 might be a little bit faster than Phase 2. And I wanted to talk about this quickly, Jen, because of the question you asked about side effects. Sometimes if side effects are happening, like headaches or bathroom emergencies or you’re constipated or you’re experiencing diarrhea or those types of things, it could be because Phase 2 isn’t keeping up with Phase 1 and so your body is feeling toxic. Remember those toxins from Phase 1 can be more dangerous than the toxins that were originally in the body. So that’s very important to note. And if that’s the case, then what you need to do is just make sure that you’re really supporting Phase 2 detoxification with the appropriate nutrients. So adding all of those supporting nutrients, the B vitamins so on and so forth, to make sure that the conjugation process takes place effectively and quickly can be a really helpful key to making sure that you don’t experience those types of issues. And then in terms of how long does it take, I always recommend a full 30 day cleanse for anyone.

Detoxification with Hypothyroidism, Gall Bladder Removal or

Gastric Bypass

Q: Special considerations and/or interventions for detox/cleanse with clients who hypothyroidism or who have had their gall bladder removed or gastric bypass?

A: So there are a few things that I would recommend for those special cases. First of all, watch the amount of fiber that you’re consuming because it expands in the stomach and we don’t really want that if you’ve had a gastric bypass. Your stomach is a bit smaller. You can’t quite handle as much fiber. So if you’re taking any detox products, I always recommend for people to take down the dose to about a fourth to one half of what’s on the label or even less depending on how your body is feeling. It’s a great idea to start with maybe even a fourth of the dose or even a little bit less, and then ramp up a little bit from there. A little fiber could be good because there is a tendency after having bypass surgery for the stomach to get rid of its contents too quickly which can cause this rush of sugar into the bloodstream and cause hypoglycemia just a few hours later. And a little bit of fiber can slow down the absorption. But just watch the amount. A lot of times, cleanses are full off fiber for obvious reasons. But it can be hard on people who have experienced gastric bypass. Also, you want to watch the garlic. A lot of programs tend to rely heavily on garlic for detoxification. And if you’ve had bypass surgery, it may have a tendency to give you heart burn. So you can eliminate those from your diet. And also I’ve noticed that people who had the surgery generally just don’t do well with garlic. Also, make sure that you watch the amount of oil. If you’re using a program that recommends any oil or you have any oil in the diet, and some programs do recommend you know healthy coconut oils and that sort of thing, you just want to be aware of that because it’s just you’ve had your gall bladder removed because it could be – it will be more difficult for your body to break down and digest that oil. So make sure that you’re aware of that. Also for any detox formula that you’re using, if you’re using supplements that have been formulated for detoxification, I always recommend that you cut the dose in half especially if there’s liver, herbs, and liver support included because of the lack of a gall bladder. And typically, these capsules need to be a little bit weaker or the product needs to be a little bit weaker. So cutting that in half is a great idea and that should give you a nice cleanse. If you want to ramp that up a little bit to see how you do, you certainly can. But if you start having, you know, side effects from the detox and that sort of thing, then I would definitely cut that back. So just be aware of that. You want to really support the liver, as I said before, because it’s super important. But if you are cleansing super fast because of other detoxification formulas, then that can overwhelm the body especially since you no longer have a gall bladder. So that’s what I would recommend for that. And then finally just think about the liquids that you’re drinking. If you have had a gastric bypass surgery, you want to cut down the amount of liquid that you’re drinking in terms of like smoothies that you might be ingesting for detoxification or juices that you might be drinking just to flood the body with nutrients, make it more alkaline. You know, simply

because your stomach can’t handle large volumes of liquids. So those would be some considerations that I would advise you to think about if you have these conditions or any of these conditions and what to do.

The Vitamin Controversy

Q: Would Cynthia be so kind as to share her thoughts on the vitamin controversy in the media as of late?

A: I feel like these controversies around vitamins come up every few years. And they, sort of, stir up some concern. They rile up the public. They get the nutritionist fired up. And then it just sort of goes away. We’ve seen this a lot in the media. There was an article called Enough is Enough: Stop Wasting Money on Vitamin and Mineral Supplements that was published in the Journal of Internal Medicine. And then the New York Times ran an article called Skip the Supplements. And a lot of these things, keep in mind, are on the basis of actual science. But they’re a bit misleading. A lot of times, these stories are sensationalized to capture attention and to sell papers all right? And let me tell you a little bit about why. They represented, these publications, really represented three different studies. One of the studies looked at the role of multivitamins in preserving cognitive functions. And this was done with a group of male physicians. And they found that there were no clear benefits to over the placebo. They followed just under 6,000 participants for around 12 years. Now, just think about that for a second. Basically, what this study is telling us is that taking a multivitamin, a multi-nutrient supplement, and everything else being equal didn’t make the male doctors smarter. There was no difference basically between them and the placebo effect. So are we really looking for multivitamins to make us smarter? I’m just not sure that that’s what a multivitamin would do. I mean, did you ever think to take them – taking a multivitamin would make you Einstein? I just I don’t really get the correlation there. It doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me. Yes. I don’t quite understand that. And then there was in the other study that was published was on the effect of multivitamins on the recurrent heart disease. And this was over an average span of about four and a half years. And they did this study on a little less than 2,000 adults who had already had one heart attack. And the rate of these events was in fact lower in the group that was assigned to multivitamins, but not specifically – not significantly lower than the results that they saw in the placebo group. And of course there was no evidence of any harmful effects of the multivitamins either. So again there, you have a situation that was a bit less.

And then finally, there was a study that was done that concluded that we lack clear evidence that multivitamins can prevent heart disease or cancer. And the conclusion was that it was quote that what they said, actually I wrote this down, was quote limited evidence supports any benefit from vitamin and mineral supplementation for the prevention of cancer or CVD. But are we really looking for multivitamins to protect us from cancer with everything else being the same way?

Detox Response – Eliminating Toxins

Q: What triggers a body to start to release toxins when you change your diet, say to whole foods diet or when you go on a fast either an intermittent type fast or a longer fast? I can see how it would be healthier for your body with a change to whole foods. And I can see how it might give your organs a break with the fast. But what causes an actual detox response?”

A: So the increased nourishment of the body’s organs, increased fiber and increased water, all allows the body to eliminate toxins quickly. The body is designed to naturally want to heal and get rid of waste. And it has several methods for doing this including the liver, sweating, urinating and so on, where you’re constantly detoxing. So when we say detox, I know sometimes it’s like, “Well, we’re always detoxing.” Like, what really jumpstarts this whole process? And the fact is that it’s never really like stopping and starting a detox because we’re all always detoxing. It’s simply that by nourishing the body and supporting the body’s natural detox process, we detox more thoroughly and we detox more quickly. If we are constantly bombarding the body with toxins, then there’s no time for it to cleanse. It’s constantly in this defensive position right? It’s cleansing when and where it can. But really, it’s trying to protect itself. Its most important goal is to stay alive. When we change our diet and we start nourishing our body and giving it the nutrients to support it through Phases 1, 2 and 3 of detoxification, then the body naturally jumpstarts and says, “Whoa, I’m getting a little break. I have some extra time here. Let me get some of these extra toxins out.” So that’s how that whole process works.

Quality Canola Oil

science module to say that it was a myth that canola oil is unhealthy. But I’ve some additional research and it seems that over 90 percent of canola oil is GMO. And that would lead me to believe that it’s not a healthy choice. Would you please address this again?

A: So the previous discussion was around canola being the same as rapeseed and how it was unhealthy because of this. So that’s what we discussed back in. The issue that you’re raising, this one of GMOs, is another story altogether. It’s another issue. About 80 percent, sometimes a little bit more, of the canola oil crops in North America are genetically modified to tolerate herbicides right? And I hear you. And those are not healthy. And I don’t recommend that you consume any of these GMO products. Instead, I would encourage you to look for expeller pressed non-GMO canola oil. It’s a little bit more expensive, but it’s definitely the healthiest possible alternative. Expeller pressed just means that it’s extracted from the sea by a mechanical press instead of using that chemical extraction process. So you don’t have all of those toxins since we’re in the detox module. And it contains none of the chemical residues. It is also kept at temperatures that are under 120 degrees Fahrenheit during the extraction. So all of those things that we talked about before, in terms of canola oil and all of these myths surrounded and that sort of thing, those are still very true. What you’re raising here is GMOs. And of course, that’s a very different situation that I certainly don’t recommend that you purchase canola oil that is or that has been genetically modified. Instead if you’re looking to go with a healthier option, then certainly you would choose one that is not GMO.

Detoxification Research

Q: With regard to Module 4, is it possible to send four or five articles to read about the topic? Would you please provide a few from which the lecture was provided?”

A: Yes, absolutely. We can provide some different articles to you. I can definitely post some links to detoxification articles under the teleclass recording link for this particular recording. I’m happy to do that. And the lecture has been provided from my own knowledge and over many, many years and lots of research into the world of detoxification since we started SoCal Cleanse, I guess about seven or eight years ago. But yes, I’m totally happy to send some more or some additional reading material for sure.

Best Type of Water for Drinking

Q: I completely agree that the best source of water would be from a natural spring. But if that isn’t available, what would be the next best ideal choice? Right now, I’m drinking

water from an arrow system that is reverse osmosis and using Alkalife drops in it and a pinch of sea salt. I think drinking water is so important. But I don’t want to promote drinking tap water and would like to point people in the right direction. And going to a natural spring to get drinking water is not an option where I live.

A: I love what you’re doing and I love that water is so important to you as it should be. I think it’s one of the things that we don’t really think about a lot. And we really should, you know. We got out to restaurants to eat, and I know people just sort of get water. They bring you water in those glasses. And I always just look at this little toxic vial of liquid. I’m just so appalled by it because there are so many toxins in there that it blows my mind that restaurants still serve tap water, simply because I know what a dirty process or a dirty liquid that it is. So definitely, we’ve actually been known to bring our own water to restaurants, which I know sounds a little crazy. But you do what you got to do. So I love that you talked about the reverse osmosis option. That, if you can’t get access to spring water, is the next best option. So what you’re doing is definitely the right thing. And putting the drops in it with a little bit of sea salt is perfect. The only thing I might recommend to you is just making sure that you get your minerals in other foods and juices. I understand the drops and I love getting the essential minerals from just a bit of sea salt. I always, by the way, put a little bit of sea salt into my water when I’m drinking it, always, simply because I want those electrolytes. I want those minerals in my body. It’s really important and most of us are deficient in those minerals. So I always toss a little bit in there even if I am drinking spring water, just give it a little bit of a boost, helps me with energy. It’s really great. So yes, so you can do that. Another way that you can sort of reintroduce minerals to the water is to add about a fourth of a teaspoon of Himalayan salt per gallon of water to really make up for the minerals lost. It sounds like you’re doing that with the pinch. And then in terms of restructuring the water because with reverse osmosis obviously, a lot of times the structure of the water is lost and lots of people think that this can be very harmful for the body. So what you can do is just store it in a large round glass jar. And before you put it in the fridge, you’ll want to sort of create this vortex in the container using a large mixing spoon. Or you can just twirl it around and around, but a mixing spoon is a bit easier. And this helps to restructure the water back closer to its natural state and, of course, helps to aerate it. Now that being said, there are machines that you can buy that do this for you which have electric motors basically. And they’re about $400 to $500 dollars. I don’t believe that they do a much better job though than you just, you know, twirling the water around with a spoon or swirling it around. I don’t get the sense of doing that. I know people who have purchased them. I don’t recommend it. I think you can do that on your own. And

then also keeping it cold, right around 39 degrees Fahrenheit, also helps to restructure the water back to its regular structure, its normal structure.

Digestive Enzymes

Q: As I was reading about the digestive system, I had an interesting thought. If you have diabetes and the pancreas isn’t working efficiently, minimally or even not at all to produce insulin, does this also mean that it is inefficient or nonproducing of the important enzymes needed for digestion? If the pancreas isn’t working as it should, is that across the board if you’re diabetic? Or does it still produce those enzymes? If you have diabetes, should you in all likelihood be using digestive enzymes? This is especially near and dear to me as I have two sons with Type 1. I’m really interested to hear what the answer is as at times, my older son notices his digestive system where he goes through bouts of what he calls his non-digestive times where he notices and he feels as if he isn’t digesting properly. He’s very in tune with his body and has a pretty good control of his diabetes. Coincidentally, it seems to be around times when he’s under extreme work related stress as well. He is a vegan, not a junk food one. And he eats a lot of fermented food for the probiotics. He exercises regularly also. And all things considered, he is very healthy.”

A: Digestive enzymes, as you know, are very important for a variety of functions in your body. They’re best known for helping to break down the foods into nutrients that can be absorbed the bloodstream and then, of course, those nutrients are used by your body. And yes, digestive enzymes in supplement form can be used by people who have diabetes to improve their digestion and also their absorption and utilization of nutrients. What concerns me is you’re saying during his non-digestive times, as he says, is the nutrients that he’s getting or not getting during those times because diabetes doesn’t just cause impairment in the metabolism of sugars, but it’s also associated with the abnormal metabolism with fats and proteins. So all of those key enzymes, lipase, protease, amylase, those are all important in managing diabetes because they’re going to help to digest all of those groups of nutrients, proteins, fats, sugars. And if he’s a very healthy vegan, you need those other enzymes like cellulase, for example that help break down the cellulose that he’s no doubt ingesting in plants. It’s super important. I always, always recommend that people with diabetes look at taking a digestive enzyme as a supplement, always, always, always recommend that. There’s a great book called The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy. And the author of that book suggests supplementing with digestive enzymes for managing both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes because, again, they’re going to help improve digestion. They’re

going to break down the fats, the proteins, the sugars, and the cellulose, all of those other things that we’re consuming. And this is really important for your guys because digestive enzymes can also improve circulation which we know in diabetics can be very poor. It can help to boost the immune system which we know is an issue with diabetic clients. And it can decrease inflammation. It also helps to transport those nutrients throughout the body. It’s beneficial in eliminating waste products and just enhancing your overall health and wellness level. So if your fellas aren’t taking digestive enzymes, I would recommend that you buy them right now as in like today. And get them started because I’ve seen huge benefits in clients who are diabetic and take these supplements.

Feeding Kale to Small Children vs. Milk

Q: I actually have two questions. First, I recently met a woman who mentioned was concerned about her daughter’s calcium intake, so she’d been giving her whole milk. I explained some of the issues with that, and suggested kale as a great source of calcium. She asked, “How is she going to get a 16-month-old to eat Kale?” So I suggested that she combine it with a banana, and other fruit, in a blender, to make it into a smoothie. Was this the best advice, or would you suggest something different? A: I think it’s exactly what I would have suggested. She needs those nutrients, and I think it’s a perfect way, to blend it up. And I loved that you said, “Put it with something, like a banana,” or something that the baby’s palate is probably used to anyway. I think that’s a perfect way to get those types of foods in them, because those greens can be bitter sometimes, and they’re not always yummy to these kids, who are used to having breast milk, and then fruits, and those types of things. I think that was really great. I posted an article on kale, because kale is this super food. It’s everywhere these days. And what I did was really started looking at some of the other greens. And so, for calcium, for example, we did a nutrient comparison. But what they did was a comparative analysis of all of these different greens, and they looked at everything, from how many calories, to the protein content, to the calcium content. And it’s interesting, one of the things that had— and kale, of course, was very high on all of those things. But the one thing that had more calcium was colored greens, which I thought was really interesting.

Q: I’m just wondering about indoor air quality. I’ve been trying to encourage people to use something other than air fresheners, like Glade, but when I’m asked to use what in place, what to use in place of that, I’m not sure what to tell them. A: Well, you know I really love to use is essential oils. So I’ll get some different essential oils, you can make your own blend or you can buy different blends. I try to do organic just because the vibrational frequency is higher, and it’s cleaner for your environment. And then, you can diffuse those, and there’s a few different ways you can diffuse. You can heat them— you can buy diffusers anywhere. You can also buy these little white pads that you can put two or three drops on, and it will literally scent an entire room. It’s fabulous. You can also, if you want to have more of a decorative thing that you leave out all the time, it’s almost sort of a do-it-yourself potpourri, you gather things from the environment, you could get shells from the beach, or pick up pinecones, or whatever it is, put them in a nice bowl, and then, just drip the essential oils on there. I really enjoy doing that. And it’s something that we did in our own house.

Length of Detox

Q: I have a question about detoxing. How long should the proper detox/cleanse last? A: It depends on every individual. I know sometimes you guys ask questions and I say, “Well, it depends on the individual,” but it really is true. If this is their first cleanse ever, and they’ve just been living this really toxic lifestyle, mind, body, food, everything, then, obviously, it’s not realistic to think that in seven to 10 days, they’ll be good to go. Cleanses like that, for someone like that, could last up to 60 days, a full two months. For people who are fairly healthy and just need to cleanse with the seasons, a good 25 days, 30 days. I always like doing a 30-day cleanse for 99.9 percent of the people, because I think that is an appropriate time to get through the three phases of detoxification gradually with support. It doesn’t need to be this quick, hard, and fast detox. It does take some time. So I love 30-day cleanses. With SoCal Cleanse, we did a ton of research and development around this product, and we have so many user groups that we put through the program. We actually were in research and development and testing for almost two years. It was really intense. And where we found the most benefits was with 30-day cleanses, because after 21 days, they’ve broken those old habits. Studies show that it takes 30 days to form new ones.

Page 21: Q&A Vault Science Module 5 - Amazon S3AVault-SCIM5...Q: ,XQGHUVWDQGI URPWKHPDWHULDO ,¶YHJRWWHQW his far in Science Module 4, that detoxing

But we also see, after 30 days, your cells become renewed. Your digestion is on a whole, other path and everything is really cleansed out of the body. And then, I would add that this whole idea that I talked about in the module, of continuous cleansing, is also really important. So even though we may not be on a full-on cleanse, or detox, it’s important to do something every day that cleanses the body; whether it’s having a cup of warm water and lemon first thing in the morning, to flush out the toxins your body has released overnight, or a cleansing smoothie for lunch, or for dinner, a couple of times a week. Something like that, just basically eating clean, real foods, real fruits and vegetables that naturally cleanse and detoxify the body. Whatever it is, for you, I think that is probably even more important than doing a full-on deep cleanse program. But if you do, then I think a minimum of 30 days; and that’s what we found in lots of research over the years.

Reasons for Hunger After Eating

Q: If a client doesn’t feel satisfied after they have eaten, or never seem to get full, is that a body, mind, or spirit issue, and how do you go about that? A: It depends. It could be one of those things. It could be all of those things. So let’s take one of them at a time. If they never feel satisfied after they eat, it could be a body thing; it could be that they’re eating the wrong foods. So what are they eating? If they’re eating foods that are devoid of a lot of nutrients, then they’re never going to feel full, because their body is still craving nutrients. So, even though they may eat a whole box of cookies, they might still feel hungry, because there are no nutrients in those cookies, or processed foods, or whatever it is that they eat. So it could be something like that. There could be some sort of fungal overgrowth, or yeast overgrowth, going on in the person’s body. It could be a hormonal imbalance that’s causing them not to feel full after they’ve eaten. When you talk about Leptin and Ghrelin, the hunger hormone, and the hormone that tells you when you’re full, if these two are out of balance, then you don’t know when you’re full, and you can just keep on eating. So, either of these could be the issue. Mentally, there are a lot of emotional things that we’re going to get into. We’re going to get into the spiritual things, as well. But when we get into those modules, you'll start to piece it together even more, because we’ll start to look at all of these psychological

Page 22: Q&A Vault Science Module 5 - Amazon S3AVault-SCIM5...Q: ,XQGHUVWDQGI URPWKHPDWHULDO ,¶YHJRWWHQW his far in Science Module 4, that detoxing

triggers that may be happening, because, yes, they just ate, but they’re still hungry, like from five minutes ago. It could be that they haven’t really eaten what they were hungry for. So if they feel like they need love or compassion, it doesn’t matter how much they eat, unless they have that love or compassion, they’re still going to be hungry. And it’s going to manifest itself in a physical hunger, because they’re not equipped enough to really step back from themselves, and say, “Oh, this isn’t a physical hunger. I’m feeling lonely,” or, “I feel like I need love.” They’re not going to make that connection. That’s why you’re there. So they’re going to tell you that they still feel hungry, and can’t get full. And it’s very similar to that, for a spiritual issue. If they just have no connection at all. And we’re starting to see a lot of this. There are so many opportunities for people, or for you, now that you will know this, and be prepared to tell people, because they’re really starting to look for something more, and they’re looking to dive into the spiritual aspect, and the mental aspect. If there’s something missing in your spiritual nourishment, it doesn’t matter how much food you eat; it is never going to be satisfied. So it really does depend. And then, it could be all of those things, depending on the client. And that’s where you really going in depth, meeting with the client. We have coaching modules. I’ll tell you guys the right questions to ask, and how to ask them, and how to dig, and how to probe, without feeling invasive. And then, how to also look at their nutrition, what sort of spiritual program they have, if any, and analyze that, so that you can set up a program for them. And then, what you do is baby step it. And you do one thing at a time for them. You don’t give them a complete overhaul, and send them on their way. You work with them on one thing at a time, to rebuild that feeling of being satisfied. It does really depend on the person. The good news is you’re getting everything that you need in this course, to really address all of those things, mind, body, or spirit, which is great, because, typically, what we’ve seen, and what I was equipped with, was just like the hormonal stuff, or the food stuff, or it could be a food intolerance. And I got that part. I never got the rest, because I never went to a school that taught that until I got out of school, and then, went back again. So the great thing is that you’re going to come out of this program, armed with all of these tools, so that you can address every single part of that.

Q: What length of time do you usually recommend your clients to cleanse, and do you recommend clients exercise while cleansing? A: So we covered the time that I normally recommend for them to cleanse. In terms of exercising, I think that I would recommend moderate movement. What that means is I don’t recommend that when you’re cleansing, that you go run a marathon on the weekend, or that you even train for one, but I also don’t recommend that you just lay on the couch, and let your toxins come on out. What I recommend is a good medium. That could be something like going for a walk, and again, it really depends on how active you normally are. If you are an ironman athlete, you could totally go for a run in the afternoon, while you’re cleansing, and be fine, for a very long run and be fine. But if you’re not someone who exercises a lot, then I would recommend that you just do moderate exercise. You could go for a walk or do a bit of weight training. I love yoga classes when people are cleansing, because certain poses and twists really help to twist the organs, to release toxins into the body. Also, breath work is really amazing and really powerful when you’re cleansing, to cleanse the respiratory system, the blood and oxygenate the brain. So I really love that, plus you’re bringing together this union of the body, and the mind, and working toward this bigger idea. Yoga, in of itself, is very cleansing. But I do think you should do something, because when you move, you stimulate the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system, as you guys all know now, doesn’t move on its own. So you need something. And also, you sweat, and I do recommend doing something that will work up a bit of a sweat, because you’re going to sweat out those toxins; and that’s really important. So I do recommend that you move, that you exercise, while cleansing. I never recommend a program, by the way when people say, “I’m cleansing, and I’m just too tired to work out,” I’d say, “You should do another cleanse,” because you shouldn’t always feel great on a cleanse, but you should feel like there’s progress being made, you should feel good, you should feel supported. Even if you’re a little bit uncomfortable at times, or if you get a little bit of a headache, you should never feel horrible while cleansing. If you feel really bad, or really horrible, that’s your body trying to tell you that something’s not right, and that you need to fix that. So you should never feel terrible, and you should always have the energy to exercise when you are cleansing.

Benefits of Twisting

Q: When you talk about twisting, and that kind of exercise being really good, particularly for detox, I think I’ve always known that. Can you give me a little bit more on why, because a lot of the things we do in the Lagree Fitness that we teach here is twisting. And I want to know why I all want them trying to get them to do stuff, I say, “Well, you know, this is very detoxifying,” and I never have a really great reason why. A: In terms of the twisting it’s not a really complicated process. So we know that, just through different studies that have been done around the process of yoga, you twist your body’s organs like a sponge. So if you can imagine twisting a sponge and the water coming out, or whatever’s in the sponge coming out, the same exact thing is happening to your organs. It’s not any kind of crazy process or anything that happens. It’s just when you twist those organs, toxins are released, because toxins are built up in the tissues of those organs. When you twist, and open those up, the toxins come out. But it’s interesting, because I’ve taken yoga classes before, and asked, either during the class, or afterward, people would talk about how, when they did a certain twist, and they held it for awhile, it’s like they got a little bit light-headed, they felt a little nauseous for a minute, they needed to stop, and it wasn’t a physical thing, that they couldn’t hold the pose, it was just they felt kind of funny. That was just a release of those toxins, coming out into the body. The longer you hold those twists, the more that can be released. So they’ll experience that sometimes, but that’s really it. And the important thing is that it’s being done. And then, it’s really great if – and I know in your classes, everyone does this, but really drinking a lot of water to flush the toxins out, but also eating something afterward that has all of those nutrients that we talked about. So a protein shake would be ideal in that case, some fiber, all of that stuff, to really flush those toxins out afterwards. It’s almost like actually get a massage, and they tell you, “Drink lots of water,” and they should really be telling you, “Go have a smoothie,” or something like that, so that you can bind to those toxins, and flush them out. It’s a really great idea for you having those smoothies, or something like that, that you could offer afterwards, even a detoxifying smoothie, to really boost that process of cleansing. If your customers are into that, and detoxing is a big thing for them, it might be a great opportunity for you. And what I would recommend to you guys, for any of you who aren’t in business currently and don’t have a business, and maybe you’re going through it, and you’ll be in business, by the time this course is over, don’t worry about that. But if you currently don’t have that, I know there’s a lot of people in this course who do have businesses, and who are coaching people already, and who are already working in the nutrition field, and the holistic health field, really pay attention to things that they’re saying, and doing, and learn

from them too. Pay attention to the questions that they’re asking, or things that they’re sharing about their audiences, or what their audience wants. It might not be what your audience wants, or maybe what you want to focus on, but, usually, you can pick up nuggets of information, that’ll be applicable across the board, and things for you to write down, like ideas for your own business. So it’s a great opportunity for you to just pick up on these things, and be aware of them. So somebody starts talking about their business, tune in, as opposed to tuning out, and thinking it doesn’t relate to you, because you can actually learn a lot from those people. I’ve learned so much from listening to other people talk about their businesses, and found things I can implement in my own, that have made a huge, huge, huge difference. And if you are in business, again, listen to the people, the other people who are in business, because a lot of times, they’ll share great information, or have a question, and you can see how it relates to you, and you’ll be able to use that. So I just want to throw that out there. I want you guys thinking about the whole picture, because when this course is over, I want you to hit the ground running, and be really armed with everything you need to set up a successful business.

Psyllium Husks

Q: On the back of my packet of Psyllium Husks, it recommends to not take it with food, as it may reduce certain nutrients from being absorbed. I’m confused as it’s a great source of fiber. I thought fiber needed to be consumed with food to help with elimination. Will it still have its great benefit of cleansing in the GI tract, taking it separately? What are your thoughts about this? Is it a good recommendation? A: This is a really great question. I’m actually not a huge fan of Psyllium Husks. I just don’t love them, and I’ll tell you why. I see a lot of people using them, and then not drinking enough water to really flush everything out. And so, they end up getting constipated, and they end up causing a lot more damage to their GI tract. The other thing is that Psyllium Husks do absorb everything; like everything. It’s like charcoal in the body. So quick tip: Charcoal, it will absorb anything and everything. It’s very neutral. It’s very alkaline in the body. If you take— let’s say drank too much, and you want to suck up that alcohol, you could take that. If you’re feeling really nauseous because of something that you ate and you’re suffering from food poisoning, taking charcoal tablets is a really great way to alleviate that.

The problem is charcoal will soak up everything, like everything, in your tummy, whether it’s good nutrients, bad nutrients, whatever; it’ll soak that up. And so, the same is true with Psyllium. I think that Psyllium is really hard for the body to digest, and part of Psyllium is not completely broken down and it’s insoluble, so it goes through the gastrointestinal tract and really sweeps. It’s like a little broom that sweeps and cleans the digestive tract, which is great. I just see a lot of people having a lot of trouble when they take it. Their recommendation to not take it with food…it doesn’t matter too much if you do take it with food. It’s just that if you do, maybe all the nutrients won’t get absorbed. The other thing is if you take it with food that’s very fibrous, then you will really need even more water to get all of the fiber through your body, so that you don’t end up constipated, and cause more issues in the GI tract. I would be really careful about taking it with medication, birth control, heart medication, cholesterol medication, high blood pressure, because it can soak all of that up. So there’s a bit of a concern with it for that reason. It does have great cleansing benefits, there are just other fibers that you can have if you’re eating whole food with insoluble fiber, and that’s a great way to cleanse the GI tract.

Digestion – Length of Time

Q: I once learned that it takes about 12 hours to allow the body to digest completely. Should we give our body that break? Is this even true, or what are your thoughts on that? A: My famous answer, “It depends.” It depends on what you’ve eaten. Fruits, if you don’t have anything else in your tummy, and you eat a piece of fruit, that’s going to be gone in about an hour, sometimes less, for certain people. If you’re eating a full meal, depending on what’s in that meal, if you have a lot of protein and fiber, it can take longer for sure. Twelve hours is a little extreme, though, for digesting.

If you’re more active, it’ll go faster as well, because you’re active, and you’re moving, and so, you have that energy. But, yes, in terms of giving your body a break, you can give your body a break, but if everything is functioning optimally in your body, you really shouldn’t need to. And also, if you’re eating the right foods, you really shouldn’t need to give your body a break Sometimes, what happens is people say, “Gosh, after lunch, I just feel really exhausted, and I have no energy, and it’s all going to my digestive system, so I just take a little

Page 27: Q&A Vault Science Module 5 - Amazon S3AVault-SCIM5...Q: ,XQGHUVWDQGI URPWKHPDWHULDO ,¶YHJRWWHQW his far in Science Module 4, that detoxing

break.” And that’s okay. It’s totally fine to do that, and definitely more energy will be directed to your digestive system when you’re breaking down food, but it also really depends on the food that you’ve eaten. If you’ve eaten just pasta with the creamy sauce on it, then yes, you’re probably not going to feel so great, and be tired. But the idea of eating is to really use food as fuel. So if you’re eating things like vegetables, and whole grains, and that sort of thing, you should actually be left with energy. You should feel really good. Raw foods are also great at really giving you that boost of energy. And then, even though you’re digesting them, it shouldn’t be a huge process, and you shouldn’t really have to give your body a break. I hear a lot in detoxing, “Well, you give your digestive system a break,” which is fine. And can you do that? Sure, absolutely. Fasting is a way to do that, if you do it properly. Having a smoothie for a meal, as opposed to an actual food-based meal, is a good way to give the digestive system a break, and your body can recoup that energy. It is a good idea to do you’re sick and not feeling well, your body needs all that energy that it can get, to really work on healing and repairing you. So you don’t want to eat like a steak dinner, with baked potatoes, and a huge meal. That’s why people recommend soup. That’s an example of when you would give your digestive system a break. But, in terms of our everyday lives, where we’re going through our days, and we should all be fairly healthy, I’m hoping, and that shouldn’t be an issue, and you shouldn’t necessarily have to give your digestive system a break. If you want to recoup that energy for something else, you can totally do that; but otherwise, it’s not required.

Consuming Hemp

Q: I recently purchased some organic hemp protein meals from my local health food store, to add to our smoothies in the morning. It states on the packet that Australian Legislation recommends hemp for animal food, not for human consumption, in Australia and New Zealand only, and other parts of the world can. I’m unsure why, as it is still sold in a human health foods store. All of the packets say this, and they also state it can be used in bath products, soaps, and facial scrubs, et cetera; just not to be consumed. What can I recommend to clients to use? We have a 100% Pea Protein Isolate, which looks okay with nutritional characteristics, and no added NASPEs. A: Here the thing with New Zealand and Australia, and hemp powder. People throughout the world are a little funny about hemp. In the US, we have a really weird thing too, where we can buy and sell it: we just can’t grow it. It’s actually illegal for us to grow it. You can be sent to jail if you grow hemp. Yet, we can import it from Canada, or from

anywhere else, and buy it, and sell it, and that’s not a problem. We just can’t grow it. It’s really silly. Also, with hemp, people tend to get a little weirded out by it, because they think it’s the same thing as marijuana. It’s not. It’s a sister plant. It’s a different strain of cannabis completely, but that’s another issue for it. Australia, it is illegal for us in the US to ship to Australia. Australia’s really weird about hemp. And for some reason, just like you said, they don’t advise that humans consume it. Now, it’s carried in all of these health foods stores, and you can buy it, no problem. But they have this disclaimer, because of their laws, that it’s not for human consumption. And so, they’ll put on there, “It’s great for bath products,” and that sort of thing, but they’ll still sell it in the health foods stores. It’s just a really weird jurisdiction law. It’s totally fine for you to consume 100%. It’s just straight up hemp. There’s nothing added. It's hemp protein. So that’s great! It’s fine for you to consume it. It’s fine for you to have your clients consume it. But they have to put that disclaimer on there. It’s a legality that they have to abide by but the fact that the thing’s sold on health foods stores tells you something, right? They wouldn’t carry it if it weren’t edible. Pea Protein is fine. It’s just I like a blend of protein. If you’re going to do plant-based protein, something like Pea Protein, with hemp, or without, but also, maybe, adding in brown rice, just some other grains that make it a little more well rounded, so that you have that complete amino acid profile, because you don’t— you get that with hemp, but you don’t get that with Pea Protein, which is why I love hemp so much. So my recommendation is to have the hemp, and disregard the legalities on the label. But if you want to do a Pea Protein, I would just add something like a brown rice with that.

Lactase Enzymes and Dairy

Q: If clients decide to continue eating dairy, do you suggest to them to take a lactase enzyme? A: Yes, I do, because obviously, this is someone who’s like, “Oh, I don’t care what you say. I’m eating my dairy.” And that’s okay. Some people, just really want their dairy. I don’t recommend dairy for anyone, whether you’re plant-based or not, just based on what I’ve seen. I’ve never seen anyone do well with dairy; and when I say anyone, I mean anyone. I have seen a few people do okay with raw dairy, but that’s it. And even then, a few of them have taken an enzyme that has lactase in it. So, yes, if your client

just says, “I’m not giving up milk. What else you got?” You just say, “Okay. Take this enzyme, and that’ll help you digest it.” I would definitely recommend that.

The Phases of Detoxification

Q: On the topic of detox, I wasn’t clear on exactly how long each phase lasts, in terms of Phase Two and Phase Three. A: It really depends. It really depends on what kind of cleanse the person is doing. If they’re doing something where, they’re just doing hemp protein smoothies, and that’s it, and they’re not eating any other foods, then they’ll move from Phase Two to Phase Three faster. If they’re doing plant-based detoxification or a whole food detoxification program, and they’re just juicing to supplement to that, and maybe, they’re taking some enzymes and probiotics, then it may take them a little bit longer to move through all of the phases. Generally, within that 30-day scope, that I was telling you guys about earlier, builds to have gone through all three phases. And some of them may still be in Phase Three, but I always recommend, after cleansing, that people really ease back into foods. I don’t recommend they go out, and eat a cheeseburger, just because their cleanse is over, because your body’s going to be very sensitive. You’re very clean now. So I always recommend that they take it easy, and not just hop right back into that. So even if you do a 30-day cleanse, and at the end, you’re still easing into it, usually, Phase Three will be finished between that time. Generally, it can take a few days for you to go from Phase One into Phase Two. So that could take anywhere from five to seven, even 10, days, depending on the person, and the type of cleanse that they’re doing. And then, again, that same amount to move from Phase Two to Phase Three. Sometimes, Phase Two can take a little bit longer because we’re not always getting the proper nutrients, because with detoxification we don’t always know what nutrients to get. Sometimes, that can slow down Phase Two, if it’s not properly being supported, and it can take longer. Phase Two can take the longest in any of those. And then, Phase Three is an elimination phase, where you're getting everything out of the body. So it really coincides with Phase Two. It can exist at the same time. But, typically, you’ll be in Phase Three for a little bit longer, after you’re done with Phase Two.

So I hate to give you another one of those “It depends,” but it does, and I hope that makes sense.

Lemon Water – Warm or Cold for Detoxification?

Q: For lemon water, does it have to be warm water to properly detoxify, or can it be cold? A: It doesn’t have to be warm water. I like warm water because, sometimes, cold water can be very shocking to the body. You just woke up. It’s first thing in the morning. You’re probably snuggled up, warm in your bed. If you walked to your sink and threw ice cold water on your face, that’s not going to feel good. And your skin’s going to be like, “Whoa, what that. What are you doing? I just woke up!” And it can tend to have a bit of a shock to the skin. Even dermatologists will recommend that you never just use really hot water, or really cold water, first thing in the morning. And it’s the same thing with the inside of the body. We can be sensitive creatures. So I always like warm water, because the body doesn’t go into this little bit of a shock period. It’s just warm, it’s nurturing, and I think in the morning, a lot of us like having that sort of warm liquid transition. And there have been studies, by the way, about hot water versus cold water, or warm water versus cold water, for detoxifying, and they’re sort of mixed. Some will say it’s really beneficial. Some will say it doesn’t matter. So if those two negate each other, then I like the idea of just not shocking the body with the cold water.

Detoxification and Diet

Q: If you want to detoxify, is it enough to simply follow a diet with clean organic foods, eliminate common food allergies and intolerances and use filtered water, etc, or should someone follow a prescribed detox program, such as SoCal Cleanse, or another program? A: I think that you can detoxify with a diet of eating clean, organic foods, eliminating food allergies, spring water; absolutely, you can do that. I always recommend taking a good multivitamin, just for insurance, especially, if you know you’re preparing your body for a time of cleansing. Also drinking things like good probiotics, if you want to use food for that like a Kombucha, or you can take your probiotics and enzymes as supplements.

Here’s the thing I want you to be aware of, depending on the person’s lifestyle, and depending on where they live, and the foods that they eat, that may not be enough. If someone is living in an area and it’s a pretty clean area, good clean air, good clean drinking water, doing everything right, they exercise, they usually eat a clean diet, most of the time, sometimes, they may have that piece of chocolate cake or something, but they’re pretty healthy, then this may be exactly what they need. Even so, I think a good reboot deep cleansing, really nourishing and supporting the body for that person, once a year would be great, even twice a year would be great. I think that would be fantastic. However, if you have people like I have a client, for example, in New York City. And she’s always on the go. She tries to eat healthy, but you can’t always do that. She does pretty good though. But just because of the stress factor, and the air quality, and the fact that she’s not always eating these great foods, I always recommend to her, when she cleanses, a full SoCal Cleanse program about three to four times a year. Usually, she does it with every change of the season. It depends on the person. It’s not something that you have to do, and it’s something, by the way, that you can still do a cleanse with food. You don’t have to have a program. I would still just recommend, again, enzymes, probiotics, and a good multivitamin. You have got to have the protein and you have got to have the nutrients. The nice thing about these programs is that they’ve done all the work for you. You don’t have to sit and figure out exactly what you need to get enough protein, and that sort of thing; they’ve done that, and usually, they’ve put together the meal plans for you, or at least with SoCal Cleanse, we have. The best way, I think to, cleanse and to cleanse continuously, is eating those clean, whole, organic foods, and getting rid of those things that you have an intolerance to, and making sure you have great water, and great air. Also, that you’re detoxifying every part of your being. So working on your thoughts through meditation, and through some other practices that we’re getting ready to talk about in the next modules that are coming up, with psychology and spirituality; obviously, those play an important role as well.

Pre-Workout Energizers and Vega Sport

Q: There are so many people who are looking for pre-workout energizers. I have a lot of clients who are vegan, who are using the Vega Sport, the pre-workout energizer. Do you have any thoughts on that? They feel like it naturally enhances and that it is natural, clean, vegan, and doesn’t have caffeine.

A: So they’re sort of right. I’ll tell you, I’ve always liked the Vega products. I like Brendan. I know Brendan. And he’s doing some really great things in the world, and really happy that he’s putting his plant-based self out there, as an athlete, to show it can be done, and here are the nutritional needs. Rich Roll who’s doing a very similar thing, and has launched his own line of protein powders. So I love that they’re supporting it, and I did like Vega. Here’s what I don’t like. So Vega recently re-did this whole re-branding thing. You probably saw it. But what they did when they re-branded everything is they changed the ingredients a bit, and they put in something called SaviSeed. It’s actually made by the company that owns Vega as well, and they make it as just a standalone product. It’s totally fine, and a lot of vegans, or plant-based people use it. It’s this— it’s been cultivated for centuries in Peru, and is really rich in Omega 3. It’s great. But here’s the problem with it: It’s really hard for people to digest. I don’t know if it’s because they’re so new to the western world, there’s not really been any studies done on them, or really looking at breaking that down but a lot of people have intolerances, and they’re really, really, really hard to digest. We’ve had so many people, and I’ve talked to lots of people, especially, other nutritionists about this, who have used the Vega products for years, and then, all of a sudden they’re like, “I just felt bloated after I drink it,” or, “I just don’t feel well,” and it’s because of the SaviSeeds. So I do love the products. I love what they stand for, and they do put out really good, clean stuff, but I’m not really happy with that little change, and because of what I’ve seen happening, I really don’t recommend it. It’s going to depend on the person, as to whether or not they have any issues with it or not. It’s going to depend. It’s different for everyone; we know that. But, in addition I think Vega, in general, is a really great formula. I don’t like that they use natural flavors; that bothers me a little bit, and we’ve tried to get to the root of what those natural flavors are, and they won’t tell us, and that bothers me a little bit, because I don’t want toxic stuff in my food, especially, if it’s not necessary. But they do, other than that they have a great nutrient composition for their products. So those are my only issues with them. And so, I think if it works well for you, or works well for your clients, and I think that’s great. And they build in a lot of things to give them that boost, so I’m not surprised. Like Rich, for example, they’re doing the same thing with their protein powder. They have the Cordyceps in there, and they have the B vitamins for energy. It’s very similar to Vega, in that way, except Vega doesn’t have the Cordyceps.

Sheep and Goat Dairy

Q: What about sheep or goat dairy? Some natural doctors say it’s easier to digest? A: I have seen people do somewhat better with sheep or goat dairy. It really depends on the person. If it’s somebody who really wants dairy, you could try it out, for sure. Another thing that you could try is raw cow’s milk. That’s another option for people who can’t do the pasteurized dairy products. You could give it a try. I don’t love it, because of the same reason I don’t love cow’s milk, and that’s just because it tends to be acidic to the body, and then, the body leeches out minerals to make it more alkaline. If somebody really has to have it, I have seen a small percentage of people do better with a goat dairy or a sheep dairy, but not enough to make a huge difference, where I would just really highly recommend it over cow’s products. I think if it’s something they’re really focused on, you could have them give it a go, and not change anything else in their diet, and see how it works for them. It may work great, and they may do fantastic on it, but it’s just something to be aware of, and test out. And also, make sure that they look at their nutritional needs, if they do a blood test or an organic acids panel, which is just where it’s showing the level of nutrients in their body. And, also make sure that they’re taking a really good multi-mineral, multivitamin, to really counteract that acidic property that the dairy brings to their body.

Gall Bladder Removal

Q: Is there anything specific that you would recommend for people that have had their gall bladder removed? How is the body processing things through, without the benefit of having the gall bladder store bile? A: The gall bladder, you learned about this. I won’t go much in depth here, but it’s just this little, pear looking organ, near your liver and your pancreas, that collects bile, and your body uses that to breakdown and digest fats. Sometimes, what happens with the gall bladder is it gets really inflamed. You could have gall stones, there could be obstructions. People know that because they tend to be bloated, or nauseous, or vomiting. Sometimes, they have pain in their back. Depending on how severe their situation is sometimes they do a surgical removal of the gall bladder. Right after the surgery, of course, they’ll be given all of these intravenous fluids. But, usually, after just about a few days, you can eat real food again. Typically, high fiber foods, like beans, bread, cereals, peas, berries, baked potatoes, plums, apples, those types of things, are what I normally recommend for people who have just had that surgery. After that, long term again, I’m going to say it’s really different for people. People can, for the most part eat normally. But some people won’t be able to tolerate high fatty foods, which makes sense. So that’s an issue. Sometimes, spicy food is an issue. They tend to do best on lots of veggies and fruits. Good amino acids from a clean protein source are really great. In terms of supplements, selenium is really great to improve the bile quality, and reduce inflammation in the bile ducts, because you still have the bile ducts, even if they’re not pass through the gall bladder. So those are some of the things that you want to be aware of. Also, these people tend to do a little bit better by eating smaller meals during the day, as well as taking a probiotic. There are rare things that happen. There are people sometimes who will experience diarrhea after having the surgery, and it’s really strange, because it can last for years. It’s only in a small percent of cases, but that can happen. And then, usually, in that case, it’s just there are complications going on. And so, changing up their diet, and looking for food intolerance, and that sort of thing, tends to help. But that can happen. The best thing I found for these people is just really keeping the inflammation down, so that there are no issues, and eating that lower fat diet, and they should be okay. The thing with them that’s just going to be a little bit different is when that fat’s released from or leaves the stomach, then it’s going to trigger a hormone to release the bile into the small intestine. And then, the bile will break down the fat, and your body takes what it needs, and you either store the rest, or exercise the rest of it off. And that’s pretty much what happens.

So you still have that process, where the bile is passed on, even if you don’t have a gall bladder. It’s just because you’re now missing that organ, your diet changes a bit.

Adolescent Detoxification Safety

Q: Do you think it’s important for adolescents to detox, or do you think it’s not a safe idea for teens? A: I think it really all depends on what kind of detoxing you’re talking about. I certainly don’t really recommend detoxing across the board, for anyone under the age of 18; and that’s just a really general rule. Have I helped people who are younger than that go through with detox? Absolutely. It really depends on the kind of detox, why they’re detoxing.

Typically in adolescents, unless they have a health problem or they’re just eating a really poor diet and we’re seeing more of that by the way, more kids on the computers, or playing games, or just not eating as healthy of a diet, it is definitely is an option. It’s one that needs to be supervised, for sure, depending on what kind of detox they’re doing, and what their health is. I usually recommend that it’s supervised by a doctor. If there are any medical conditions involved, I always recommend that it’s supervised by a doctor. If they’re fairly healthy, and there are no medical conditions, and maybe they’re a little bit overweight, or they’re feeling kind of tired, they have acne, and they’re just are looking for that reboot, I would be completely fine, leading them through a whole food detox, with the correct supplements in place; making sure they have a good probiotic, a good enzyme, a healthy protein powder, that they’re getting fiber, or that they’re just eating enough clean protein. I just think any more than that, I would refer to a doctor, so that you could run some tests, to look at what their different nutrient levels are, doing a complete blood panel, to see what’s going on with them; just because it tends to be a sensitive time. And the other thing that comes into play is hormonal imbalance, and the last thing we want to do to these guys is get their hormones out of whack. So the last thing we want to do is cause even more of an imbalance there. But I do think if it’s a gradual thing, and it’s something that’s not a crazy detox, and you’re doing whole foods, and it’s just really changing their nutrition, then it would be perfect and there’s no health conditions, I think it’s perfectly safe, and usually, a good idea for teens. So again, back to that answer but it really does depend on the person.

Detoxification for Children

Q: I wanted to know your thoughts on detoxification for children? Because, even though you try to control their diet and help them with good organic foods they’re just getting toxins everywhere. So what are your thoughts on that?

A: Yeah, that’s a great question and I hear you. I remember when we had Rain gosh, three year ago which is hard to believe. I was just like, “Oh my gosh. She can’t touch anything.” We were buying like wooden toys with soy paint, it was just crazy or water based paint. When I first started working in this field, detoxification for kids was something that was just crazy and people were just like “That’s insane” and “you don’t do it” and “it’s not safe” but that’s also when there wasn’t as much known about detoxing and detoxing in a healthy way like we know today. So today where I am, I’ve actually led teenagers through detox programs several times. With the younger kids it gets to be a little more difficult simply because you don’t want little kids learning about detox symptoms and you know that sort of thing. What I found to be the biggest thin is prevention, right? And you know that’s hard. I mean they walk outside and breathe the air and there you go. I think prevention is the biggest thing. Buying organic food, having air purifiers, drinking spring water those types of things, you know watching the plastic toys all of those things that you just talked about. That’s the biggest thing I think with kids and you know it’s hard. Recent studies by environmental working groups show that kids are born with 287 toxins in their system, when they’re born. So I think detoxification is fine. I don’t think that you should necessarily give them like tons of herbs. We do little things like that, green juices, we do a lot of which are alkaline and very cleaning to the body, making sure that she has those clean plant proteins. The best way that I found to detox children is gradually and continuously. I don’t feel good about putting kids on a big detox protocol. It just doesn’t work and their little bodies become overwhelmed so quickly. So if you can do it and they’re observed and on a regular basis and you’re doing things like the green juices and the spring water and a little bit of the herbs and the teas and that sort of thing, red clover blossoms, again in the spring we do a little bit of red clover blossoms with her, this is like a little gentle system cleanse and detox, those types of things can work. But just be aware of your child and just be super, hyper aware of how they’re feeling and acting but yeah, the continuous cleansing is what I found to be most effective for the little ones.

Teenagers are bit of a different story. You can do a little bit more with teenagers because their bodies are more developed and their systems are more developed and stronger and that sort of thing.

Sea Salt & Kombucha

Q: I try to do my best and we do a little green juices and we do organic or whatever but there are these other conditions that you can’t control but I know that it’s affecting them, I can just tell. Like I can tell they’ll have little darker circles under their eyes; you can tell that just they need a little extra. One of the things that I do try to do is also Epson salt baths.

A: I love sea salt especially because I know their bodies are absorbing the little minerals because your body absorbs the minerals the same as it would as if you would have drank them. Another thing that you can try with kids, some kids will take to this some kids won’t. We got lucky because our little one just loved it and that’s Kombucha because it’s just so cleansing and so detoxifying. And if you get the kind that is not like overly fermented where it tends to be really sort of sour and bubbly, we tried that one and Rain said it was too spicy or ‘picy’, I’m like, “Oh yeah it’s too carbonated for you.” So but those I’ve seen being really effective on little ones too, because they’ll drink it and most of them like it and it’s great, that fermentation is fantastic. And also the regular kids’ probiotics and digestive enzymes and those sorts of things are always a big help too.

And not a lot, a little bit. You know when you go to these health food stores and the little round paper cups that you’d fill with ketchup or whatever the little tiny ones, it looks like a little shot, right?

Don’t buy a bottle. Just a little shot and they’re good. Lemon water or if you make them tea, squeeze a little bit of lemon in there just to help sort of support their little liver, things like that. That’s the best way to do it.

Thyroid Removal Support

Q: Regarding thyroid support, can you talk a little more about the woman who had her thyroid removed and how to support her with nutrition and supplements or if it’s too late once it’s removed?

A: So after your thyroid has been removed there’s sort of a general basic diet you should follow. Any sort of processed food should be minimized. You want to have a lot of

Page 38: Q&A Vault Science Module 5 - Amazon S3AVault-SCIM5...Q: ,XQGHUVWDQGI URPWKHPDWHULDO ,¶YHJRWWHQW his far in Science Module 4, that detoxing

plant based foods so fruits, veggies, protein sources plant protein sources, Omega 3 and Omega 6, essential fatty acids. You want to really have a well-balanced diet and the reason you want to have a lot of plant-based food is because there’s a lot of vital nutrients in there that helps the body with its immune function and also helps with hormonal balancing which can be thrown off with thyroid, when your thyroid has been removed.

Also it can help with a lot of things that happen to women especially when their thyroid has been removed is a lot of weight gain. And so that’s another reason to minimize those processed foods. Eat lot of plants and get lots of fiber, that sort of thing and also again, your nutrients. Another thing that happens is your thyroid gland produces hormones that really regulate all aspects of your metabolic functioning so after that happens, after the thyroid is removed typically there is some hormonal issues that occur and a lot of times you might be prescribed synthetic hormones. And there are also certain vitamins that might help afterwards and let me talk to you a little bit about that. First of all be aware of the side effects of the thyroid hormones and there are few, so each one has its own different thing. But some vitamins that I would recommend and also some minerals post-thyroid would be Vitamin B12. People that no longer have their thyroid gland may have low levels of Vitamin B12. Sometimes this happens, there’s been many studies over the years, there’s some research done in the 70s and the 80s and this still stands true today, there’s a lot of this research that’s been done over the years, but this first started in the 70s and 80s and they were doing a bunch of studies around it, and they found that a thyroid that was either gone or that was underactive impaired the body’s ability to absorb B12. So that’s not a great thing. And there was a study that was published in the Journal of Nutrition back in 1988 that looked at rats with hypothyroidism that was caused by having their thyroid removed and induced by medication and they found that if they had little or no thyroid function then they couldn’t absorb B12. So I would say definitely a Vitamin B12 supplement or remember the RDA for that is 2.4 micrograms per day which I’m sure you recall from a previous module. So B12 is a good one. Vitamin D and Calcium, a loss of calcium occurs in 1 to 2 percent of all people that have their thyroid removed. So that’s not a huge amount I know but it can be a significant loss if it happens to a particular person. So I would be aware of that and typically if you’re supplementing with Calcium and Vitamin D then it prevents that which is really, really nice. And this isn’t a ton, just one study that was done back in 2002 that looked at the link between Calcium and Vitamin D their supplement guidelines they gave them 3 grams of oral calcium and 1 milligram of Vitamin D per day and that really improved their

Page 39: Q&A Vault Science Module 5 - Amazon S3AVault-SCIM5...Q: ,XQGHUVWDQGI URPWKHPDWHULDO ,¶YHJRWWHQW his far in Science Module 4, that detoxing

levels in a huge, huge way. But it doesn’t happen to everyone but it is something to be aware of. And then, finally if you are taking synthetic thyroid hormones after a thyroidectomy, Vitamin C can help the body absorb them better. There’s a few studies that were done around this where patients were taking higher levels of synthetic thyroid hormones but they still weren’t reaching their target thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH levels and so what they gave these patients was a gram of Vitamin C just mixed in water for 6 weeks and all of their levels showed an improvement of about 69 percent. So that was huge.

There are definitely are things that people can do, since I know now that it’s cancer. I definitely would think about the calcium levels and having their calcium levels checked because a lot of times the parathyroid glands can be affected when the thyroid is removed because of cancer. And what those are, you may know this already, but they’re just these little, tiny, tiny very delicate glands and they’re right next to the thyroid glands and what they do is they help control the level of calcium in your blood. So if they’re not working properly, then your blood calcium levels can fall below normal and if that happens then you want to take some calcium tablets and some extra vitamin D and I say that particularly around thyroid cancer, when people have their thyroid removed because of cancer, because when doctors remove a thyroid because it’s cancerous they tend to like to get a little extra, extra, something, something just to make sure that they’ve got all the cancer and that it hasn’t passed onto anything else. And so sometimes when they do that you affect the parathyroid glands because they’re just sort of being overly cautious. Not that that’s a bad thing but that’s what happens. And again, it can only happen in that small percentage of people but it does happen. I’ve had clients that that’s happened to so yeah, so that might be that that I would definitely recommend. And then also I don’t know if they’re taking the synthetic hormones. So that’s something else then that you would definitely want to be aware of that would pertain to them. That’s a big deal. I see this happening to a lot of people their thyroid levels, the TSL levels, aren’t going back up, so taking that Vitamin C boosts that in a huge way. So vitamin C is huge. Then of course, their diet in particular. What I found with people, the iodine thing is going to depend on the client. If I were you, it gets really tricky when you start supplementing with iodine especially in people who have had thyroid cancer; it’s never something that I would mess with. I would always have them have their levels tested before recommending, “Oh hey you should get an iodine supplement.” Because it’s a very sensitive supplement and especially if the thyroid is missing, you can get overloaded on iodine really quickly and that causes a whole other slew of issues. So I would never just

say, “Hey take some iodine,” that wouldn’t be ideal but yeah, I would have them check with their doctor on that just because everyone is different. We often see low iodine levels with low energy and we know iodine can boost that but then you want to know what their levels are before you recommend it. Yeah there are things like that but little things like that you could recommend for example like energy. Something simple and also very nourishing that’s going to allow them to get a lot of minerals and some iodine but not crazy amounts. It’s just putting a little bit of a sea salt in your water when you drink it, so rebalancing the body’s electrolytes that can boost energy in a huge way. It’s one of my best kept little secrets and you have all of those minerals that you’re going to be nourishing them iodine included but not a supplemental level. Then the weight thing, it’s just being really careful about their diet. I never recommend that people who’ve had their thyroid removed take any sort of fat burners. I’ve just seen that cause a lot of issues with people so I don’t recommend that. I love just the food path that makes a lot of sense. Lots of plant based foods, lean proteins, watching their fat intake is a big thing, those sorts of things. So it really depends on what they’re looking for. I mean the mood swing thing, that’s a hormonal imbalance and then you can look at what that is in particular. There’s lots of different supplements and herbs that they can use to really bring that back. Things like red clover but then it just all depends on their individual situation but you can absolutely coach them through that, there’s nothing, you know, there’s a few things to be aware which we just talked about but it’s perfectly doable that they can be healthy, functioning individuals.

Hypercholesterolemia & Coronary Artery Disease

Q: Is hypercholesterolemia the major risk factor for coronary artery disease?

A: For those of you who don’t know Hypercholesterolemia basically just means high levels of cholesterol in the blood, so high cholesterol. Interestingly enough, I know you guys have heard this, over the years there’s been this whole big scandal around high cholesterol like, “Oh you have high cholesterol, you got to get that down, take these statins” you know, so on and so forth. And this has been something that’s been used by doctors and recognized in the medical community and health community forever now and there has been books written over the years and studies done, many studies done over the years that have shown us cholesterol isn’t sort of the bad dude that people

make it out to be. What’s interesting is that high cholesterol actually has some advantages. For one, I know that’s crazy talk but let me explain, it can protect you against infectious diseases that actually might explain why high cholesterol is associated with longevity. Interesting right? People with high cholesterol live the longest from many, many scientific papers and research and there have been numerous studies over the years published by the American Medical Association, published in The Lancet, The American Journal of Epidemiology and so many more that show this. There’s also, there was a group of Minnesota researchers that found that all of these people, the people who had high cholesterol, a group of people who had high cholesterol for several years and they looked at, they thought the people were at high risk for getting HIV, I just jumped right into that study without telling you anything about what it is. They followed a group of men who had a high risk for developing HIV, a group of people in Minnesota and they followed them for several years and those who had low cholesterol were more highly to test positive for HIV as compared to those who had higher levels of cholesterol. They had similar results from another study were there was over 300,000 young and middle-aged men. And they followed them for 16 years, so this wasn’t by any means a small study, and four times more people in the low cholesterol group had died from AIDS compared with the high cholesterol group. So we know again, this is just more studies that sort of balances out, that high cholesterol can be advantageous and can actually protect your immune system. So in terms of coronary artery disease Kelly because that’s what you asked about, specifically there’s a great book by Dr. Jonny Bowden and Dr. Sinatra and it’s called The Cholesterol Myth and I highly recommend everyone read it, it’s so good.

Coronary artery disease and high cholesterol go back a long, long way. There is two guys named Joseph Goldstein and Michael Brown and back in I think the late 70s early 80s, I can’t remember the exact years of their research. I’ll have to look that up, but what they discovered in their results of this big study that they did was the more LDL, the bad cholesterol that there was in the blood, the more rapidly atherosclerosis develops. That was their main conclusion. And they looked at the cells of people that had familial hypercholesterolemia, which is sort of a genetic passed on through families, they just have high cholesterol. What they found in a nutshell was that those people tended to develop coronary artery disease and die early in life from heart disease more so than people who didn’t have high cholesterol. And so they said, “Well high cholesterol creates coronary artery disease and it kills people.” That was their big thing. Now crazy enough they were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1985 for this discovery and a lot of people sort of shared their view. The problem was they kind of jumped to that

conclusion a bit too hasty. There are actually are benefits associated with that condition where the familial hypercholesterolemia, which is what I’m talking about here, there are advantages to that condition as we’ve talked about better, immune systems, they’re healthier, they live longer, it’s really interesting. So there can be Kelley higher rates of coronary artery disease for these people, for this particular group of people, but it’s not across the board for people who don’t have this condition. And I could go on and on and on, I recommend that book for you, just for sake of time I’ll also recommend another book that’s fantastic, it’s called Fat and Cholesterol Are Good for You and you can find it on http://www.amazon.com . It’s written by this great medical doctor who also has his PhD and studies cholesterol and the cholesterol myth for years and he has really amazing information and The Cholesterol Myth of course by Jonny Bowden and Dr. Sinatra which is phenomenal and they have a lot of studies in there for you guys who like studies and research and that sort of thing, so you can actually take a lot at where this information is coming from as well.

Magnesium Deficiency

Q: In science module 2, when magnesium is covered, it states that magnesium deficiency is rarely seen in the US. Since the majority of people are experiencing stress of some sort and you later talk about using a good Calcium Magnesium supplement, I would think that deficiency would be common.

A: When the presentation for that module was recorded that was the case that wasn’t really seen in the US, but over the last 12 to 16 months, almost two years now, we’ve seen a huge rise in magnesium deficiency, so that’s actually some information that wasn’t correct and I apologize for that and I apologize for any confusion and we’ll be making a note in our course work, we’ll be editing that and then we’ll be sending out an email to all of you and just saying that we’re constantly auditing our material and constantly reviewing it and updating it. We have a team now going through and looking and checking and making sure everything is still good that we talk about but that’s also why we give you two years access to the program to make sure that when things do change that they’re updated and you know about it because things like this change. Before as I said, we thought cholesterol was this horrible thing and now we’re realizing maybe not so bad in some situations.

Magnesium deficiency has grown over the past few years. We now see about 56 to 57 percent of people in the US who are deficient and before it generally didn’t happen. So a

lot of it is foods, lots of processed food interfere, as you guys all know by this time, with the absorption of magnesium and of course a lot of processed foods don’t have magnesium and our diets have shifted so quickly in such a big way that we’re now seeing that deficiency whereas before that wasn’t the case. So magnesium deficiency is common now. I also wanted to give you guys some sources of magnesium because this is really key since we know that it is now a deficiency. What I wanted to share with you is just a list of some great food based sources of magnesium. Okay, so we have things like: Raw cacao. So yes, chocolate, essentially. Navita’s Natural has such a great one that I love. I don’t have any affiliation with them, I am just a huge fan of their products but raw cacao is one. Raw nuts and seeds. Grains, if you eat grains, legumes, beans and lentils. Veggies. Obviously veggies so magnesium in particular you’re looking at artichokes, beet greens, broccoli, okra, cucumbers, peas, spinach, summer and winter squashes, sweet potatoes, colored greens those are all really high in magnesium. Also fruits, you can find a lot of magnesium in. So papayas, grapefruits, bananas, and dates those are all great. There are some dried herbs too that I wanted to share with you. So cilantro, chives, spearmint, dill, basil, sage, those are all really high in magnesium. Hemp also, extremely high, you guys know I’m a huge fan of hemp. Hemp is really, really high in magnesium. And then also, I love this you guys, black strap molasses. They’re great and really packed with magnesium. And also iron, they can be really nutritious. And also Grade B even Grade C maple syrup. So if you’re using sweeteners and you’re making something sweet, then make sure you toss in a little magnesium as well. But those are some ideal sources of magnesium and we’ll also make sure that we get out a document that has all of that in there so that you have that as a reference as well.

Agar – Japanese Seaweed

Q: Do you use Japanese sea vegetable gelatin agar and if so, does it help with detox? What are the benefits if any and how much would you use? I like to put it in my morning shake.

A: Agar is Japanese seaweed and it’s sort of like an alternative for veggie people to animal gelatin because you know gelatin typically is made from animals and this is sort of a veggie one. It’s very gelatinous. Here’s why it could be good for detox because it’s about 80 percent fiber that is awesome. However, I don’t use it for detox simply because I’ve never seen it work well for detox because it is so gelatinous. What I found is that it can inhibit the Phase One liberty detoxification pathways. So because it takes so long to pass through your system, sometimes those toxins stay around and it inhibits phase one and phase two and moving from phase one to phase two detoxification and once we’re in phase one detoxification we have those toxins there we want to get them through phase two and phase three as quickly as possible. Because once they go into phase one they’re more dangerous and more harmful than the original toxins. So we need to get them out of the body. So I don’t use it for detoxing. We sometimes use it for other things, gelatinous sorts of things and puddings and fun things like that. It is rich in fiber so that’s a great thing.

Using Multiple Herbs & Interactions

Q: I loved learning about all the herbal treatments we can recommend but I was wondering if there should be or there could be a concern of various herbs interacting negatively with each other causing bad side effects/reactions.

A: So I want to tell you guys about this reference. This is an amazing reference that I have used for many, many, many, many, many years now. It’s a book and I know you think, “Well gosh, she loves books.” But this one I really love and I recommend that it’s on your desk. It’s been on my desk now for about 10 years and every year I get a new one. It’s about a little over 2300 pages long, I know 2300 pages, but it’s a desk reference, it’s not like a book that you sit down and read on the weekend and it’s called Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. And so you’re asking about herbal treatments and that sort of thing and their interactions. It’s a clinical guide that was compiled for pharmacists because they’re always prescribing things and people eat things and they always have to be concerned about those interactions. And this book is phenomenal, not only does it have herbs, it has vitamins, minerals and straight up foods. And it also has prescription medications. So you can look at a quick glance and say, “Okay well, here’s what my client is taking, here’s what they have concerns about, here are these herbs that they’re all taking together, is that safe? Do they have any interactions?” and you can look that up.

For example, I literally have this book on my desk at all times. I’m looking right now at Siberian Ginseng. It’ll tell you for every one of these things, remember prescription medications, herbs, foods, vitamins and nutrients. It tells you what is also known as, so any other names like the thorny pepper bush or whatever, it will tell you the scientific names. t will tell you what people use it for, for example ginseng is used as an adaptogen for Alzheimer’s. It just goes on and on and on. It tells you if it’s safe and for which people. It tells you what the effect would be if someone is pregnant or lactating. It tells you whether or not it’s effective for each of those conditions that people take it for. It tells you the mechanism of action and which is how the compounds in these herbs and foods and minerals and vitamins work. It tells you about any sort of adverse reactions, so drowsiness or heart issues or inflamed nerves or that sort of thing and this speaks to your question. It tells you about any interaction with herbs or other dietary supplements. It also talks to you about any issues or interactions with prescription medication, there’s a bunch of that and it goes into detail about what those interactions could be. And then it has again, a list of all of the drugs that it interacts with and again tells you why, it gives you the evidence. It talks about the interactions with foods. It talks about interactions with lab tests, so if you’re going to run any lab tests, it’ll tell you like don’t take this if you’re doing these tests because it can cause issues. It also shares information about the interactions with diseases or conditions. So it’ll say if you have a hormone sensitive cancer then Siberian Ginseng might have estrogenic effects on those women, so something like that. Hypertension. It tells you about dosage and administration. It tells you how much that you should use for each condition and then there are just some additional comments at the end that just gives you a little bit more information or random things that didn’t fit into any of the other categories. So now you can see why this thing is over 2,300 pages but it’s fantastic and I always, always, always I’ve referred to this for years and it has helped me in such a big way. So I can not recommend it enough because quite honestly you can memorize some of these herbs, I mean I can rattle off the top of my head a whole list of herbs that interact with each other, that interact with prescription medications, that interact with testing, but I don’t know all of them. This book is 2,300 pages. I can’t have all these memorized but this allows you to have really great, accurate information. There are brand names in here of supplements of drugs. There are charts that you can look at for interactions for different medicines and natural herbal supplements and that sort of thing. It’s really great and the only bad news is it’s pretty expensive, it can be a pretty expensive book and you replace it every year. You don’t have to replace it every year, you can get updates on their website and I’ll tell you about that. I’m so doing an infomercial for this book and I have no affiliation with them but it’s been so helpful to me

over the years and looking at vitamins and minerals and herbs and interactions and what are they good for? What will they help my client with? And my client has this condition and what can they do? And then I can go down the list and sort of look. It’s been phenomenal for that. So if you go to http://www.naturaldatabase.com , you get free access to their databases online and they’re going to give you updates anytime the book changes, they’ll say, “Oh, on page 23 we tell you these but new studies have been done. We know that information changes, right? They’ll let you know when that information change and what the update is, you can also log on here and type in the herbs or the medicines or the prescriptions whatever it is that you’re concerned about having interactions and it will tell you if there are interactions and if so what. There are handouts that you can use with your clients. It’s really, really good. It’s definitely worth it. I know that was a big long answer but this book is fantastic. I would recommend all of you get it. I usually just buy it on Amazon, but yes, there are definitely herbs and they can interact with each other and they can cause side effects and reactions, so yeah you want to be aware of that and that’s a great resource. It’s the best way I found to keep up with all of the interactions so I highly, highly recommend it.

Supplements for Specific Issues

Q: In science module 5 there are many nutrient supplement and herbal recommendations for anti aging, stress, weight loss, etc. that may be difficult to comply with. What would be general baseline supplement recommendations to get the adults started on transformation?

A: So you’re right, there are a lot of and it can be overwhelming for people, I agree. It really depends on the individual and what they’re having issues around. So remember let’s always try to get them the nutrients that they’re low in or deficient in through food. Supplementation is a great way to bring them up to speed quickly but let’s make sure then that they’re eating the foods as well so they don’t have to take those supplements all the time. A good baseline recommendation, I recommend, for all of these things, a baseline, a good multivitamin, I’m a big fan of a good quality multivitamin. Vitamin D just because most people are deficient in it and it affects everything from hormones to Vitamin C you name it. It’s connected to everything I feel. So Vitamin D,

also B complex because we’re seeing a lot of B vitamin deficiencies especially B12 even in people who eat animal products now it’s really interesting. Probiotics, I love and also a good digestive enzyme. Those are sort of the baseline things that I would always recommend for people in those situations. Then from there really look at their individual conditions. If they’re coming to you and they’re stressed out, so if they’re having a lot of stress and their magnesium levels are low then obviously that might be something that you want to offer as a supplement. Calcium, magnesium, if they’re stressed and anxious. That’s another great recommendation. So just look at where they are, what their diet is, by looking at their diet if you have them do food journals and when we get further through the program I’ll give you food journals that I use for clients that you could have them fill those out. You can see what their diet consists of and what they’re getting and what nutrients they’re getting and what nutrients they’re missing out on, so you can also use that to build a specific program and make recommendations for them also.

Alkalized Water

Q: What is the difference between alkaline water supposedly made with water and lemons that sits overnight and drinking a cup of warm water with fresh squeezed lemon in the morning? I read that alkalizing water should not be consumed everyday but what is the difference between letting lemon water sit overnight and drinking it right away?

A: I actually had a client I recommended one time that she drink just some warm water with lemon squeezed in it in the morning and she said, “No, you have to leave it sitting overnight.” And I said, “Why?” This was a few years ago and I had no idea what she was talking about and she said, “Because the internet says you have to.” I was like, “Oh well then. If the internet tells you, you should definitely do that.” Here’s the thing. I know that some people make this claim about having it sit overnight so that it’s more alkalizing, I don’t quite get the science behind it and I’ve looked into it and there’s just not really anything to sort of base that on. Here’s the thing, if I can get somebody to drink lemon water at anytime, I’ll take it. I’m good for that. I love drinking it first thing in the morning just so you’re flushing out, you know your body naturally cleanses at night which you guys know and so getting up and flushing that through first thing in the morning supporting the liver, that’s a great thing to do. Whether or not you let it sit overnight or not, the difference that I’ve seen over the years is minimal. I love fresh lemon. For me when lemon sits in water, it kind of becomes

not so tastier again. I don’t think it tastes fresh anymore, so I’m not a huge fan of doing that. I like it fresh in the morning but some people swear that there’s a difference.

Spore Probiotics & Cider Vinegar

Q: Can you suggest a specific product that contains spore probiotics? I love the info on finding out if someone has low stomach acid. I was wondering if apple cider vinegar can replace taking HCL or does the apple cider vinegar work to heal alongside the HCL? Is it okay to take both at the same time? And is there anything specific beyond a nutrient dense diet that a nursing mother can do to balance their hormones?

A: Yes, I would suggest SoCal Cleanse Probiotic formula or probiotic complex. They’re brand new. We sold out one round already it’s because people love them but it took us forever to find the quality of spore probiotics we wanted. A lot of people aren’t doing them right now just because they’re way more expensive to create but they’re so much better for people. So that’s the one obviously that I recommend and I know the manufacturer that we work with. These are the top quality spores, I’d put them up against anyone, I would test them against anyone, they’re amazing. So that’s what I recommend.

Apple Cider Vinegar & HCL

Q: And then, I love the info on finding out if someone has low stomach acid. I’m wondering if apple cider vinegar can replace HCL?

A: It can, maybe. I’ve seen the Betaine HCL be way more effective though. I’ve had clients who say, “No, I want to do apple cider vinegar.” Apple cider vinegar by the way will cure anything, I shouldn’t say that, it won’t cure anything let me take that back, I’m not talking about curing anything, but people claim that apple cider vinegar, it’s like anything you have going on apple cider vinegar will fix it. It cracks me up. But in this case, apple cider vinegar does work it’s just an old joke of my nutritionist, that no matter what’s wrong just take some apple cider vinegar and you’ll be fine because it’s sort of this be all end all, but in this case, it can have an effect in healing the stomach. I think it’s a great thing. I’ve done it lots of times and I have lots of clients who’ve used it. In terms of low stomach acid however, I’ve just seen HCL be a little bit more effective. It’s really up to the person. Apple cider vinegar I’ve just seen it take a little bit longer, that’s it. In terms of using it to sort of heal alongside the HCL, I don’t recommend doing that. I found that it creates this condition – it’s too much for the body, is what I found. Getting

your stomach acid levels increased would be the first priority and then I would recommend that healing apple cider vinegar. I wouldn’t do them at the same time.

Hormone Balance in Nursing Mothers

Q: Is there anything specific beyond a nutrient dense diet that a nursing mother can do to balance their hormones?

A: So because you said nursing mother, that’s something to sort of consider, normally if you weren’t nursing as soon as mothers get finished nursing, I always recommend a detox. Always, always, always it’s so important. Your hormones are sort of wacky and funky and then you stop breastfeeding and they’re even more wacky and funky and the detox is a really great way to balance them out. There’s a lot of things that you can do in terms of lifestyle things that I really love and I’ve seen be really effective with nursing mothers because again we just want to be careful when you’re nursing because for obvious reasons you have a little one and you don’t want to pass things through the breast milk onto the baby, that’s a big thing. Dr. Sara Gottfried by the way talks about this in her book, The Hormone Cure, love that book , it’s one of like the top books, I know you guys have heard me recommend it a hundred times, but it’s really good. I would recommend checking that out and checking out her solutions even on her website because she’s great at this. But I love lifestyle things for nursing moms. I love them for a few reasons. One because they get the mammas time for themselves and mammas need that. And then also it’s just a very natural way for your body to sort of relax into itself and repair and balance your hormones. So, things like meditation and meditation doesn’t have to be the cross legs and the shut eyes and that sort of thing. It can be a walking meditation, you can get out in nature, you can just gaze into a candle, it doesn’t have to be anything radical or crazy and you don’t have to do it for a long period of time. I love that. I love just relaxing. That stress can have a huge impact on your hormones and so the more that you can distress which I know is hard when you have a little one, is really key. That would be the main thing that I would recommend. And then from there I wouldn’t recommend anything without knowing what your hormonal levels are again because you’re nursing. So I would do if you’re really experiencing some sort of hormonal inflections and/or fluctuations and you’re having mood swings, and first of all it’s really normal but second of all, I would get a hormone panel. I would have a hormone panel run just to see what exactly is off balance because

hormones are so sensitive and especially when you’re nursing. That’s something that you really want to be fully aware of the entire situation before you just start throwing things at it randomly, trying to balance them. Without knowing like your specific situation like I don’t know if you’re adrenals are having issues or what’s your cortisol levels look like and what they look like first thing in the morning versus last thing at night, don’t know any of that and of course all of that determines sort of what actions that you can take. The biggest thing I’d recommend is lifestyle changes and I would recommend a hormone panel just to be safe and getting something specific for you.

Naming Your Business

Q: Is it better to brand yourself with your name or to come up with a catchy name like ‘underground wellness’ etcetera? I originally preferred using my name but my dilemma is both my names domains for dot com are already taken. I’m not sure if it’s wise to just register with a dot net domain or worth the competition even though the already registered dot com domains are in completely different fields? Therefore I’ve come up with a better name which I believe is catchy and leaning more towards using called Being Better Beings. Since your marketing skills are far greater than mine I highly appreciate your thoughts on this, thank you.

A: So when it comes to your name or a something like Underground Wellness or Hungry Hottie or whatever the case might be, it really is up to you. I think people say, “We’ll start with something like Underground Wellness because people don’t know Jenny Cleary and that might not be as intriguing as Underground Wellness.” I get that, I never did it. I heard people but I knew what I wanted to do for my business and for my practice and with my career and I knew that I, no matter what brand I created that I would always be the glue that held them all together. And so I, from the very beginning, used my name. I never used anything else and there is no other me so it was really clear that it was me, my brand and my methodologies and that sort of thing. It’s hard to confuse that because there is only one me. So underground wellness, over ground wellness, I don’t know I’m just making things up. There might be similar names and people could get confused but if it’s to you they’re really clear that it’s just your name, your work. I feel like you’re leaning towards Being Better Beings, so before I talk about that let me just say really quickly, the domain thing I

think it’s totally okay even if a domain name is taken especially if it’s in totally different fields. My friend Gabriel Bernstein, I remember her names were taken and she’s like, “Well this is no good. What am I going to do?” And so she registered because she really wanted to be Gabriel Bernstein that was her thing. She wanted to use her name, she knew she had big plans, she’s planning to go on Oprah and she has, but she wanted to use her name as her brand. And so she registered GabyB.tv. You’re worried about a dot net and she like, all of her things were taken so she ended up registering GabyB.TV and by the way it hasn’t hurt her any. She has hugely successful programs, she’s a New York Times bestselling author and she’s got a ton of stuff. She speaks on stage in front of hundreds of thousands of people like she’s a spiritual leader for the New Generation like she’s done amazing things. It really all comes down to search engine optimization. Getting yourself out there, providing valuable content so that people link to your website. The domain name isn’t such a huge issue anymore as it used to be so if you really wanted to use your name I wouldn’t let that stop me. In terms of the Being Better Beings, I think it’s interesting. I was kind of sitting with it for a minute, I get it. I love the play on words. I think that that’s fun. I worry that it might be a little bit of a tongue twister but that might be what makes it fun. And I also think it might depend a little bit on who your target market is. I’m just reminded of Angie. She really picked her brand name and I don’t know Angie if you want me to share this so I won’t, but she picked her brand name based on who she really was and what her journey had been and also what she knew her ideal clients would be facing. She knew that they lead normal lives that are crazy sometimes and they don’t want to eat crazy exotic foods and they need to keep it real and she needs to really focus on that. So she picked a brand name that really matched her audience. So when her audience hears that brand they’re like, “Yeah, that’s me I get it” or “Man, this is refreshing, like I want to talk to her.” So the other thing I would think about in terms of your brand isn’t just taking like a fun catchy name which this no doubt is, the triple B I like, the Bs, it’s really cute but I don’t know if it fits your target audience. It might and in that case it might be a great brand. Like Hungry Hottie we did, and also make sure no one’s using that by the way and that it’s definitely trademarkable which is good because that would add value to your business just make sure it’s not trademarked already and somebody’s not using it. But when we did Hungry Hottie I knew I wanted to do that because my audience loved the sort of snazzy, jazzy, fun names. They love being called hotties, it’s sort of their thing and they all are, these super hotties, but they’re also hungry. Hungry for food, hungry for spiritual nourishment, they’re hungry for more in their lives and I knew that and I knew that this name would resonate with them in a big way. So yes, it’s fun and it’s jazzy and

it’s totally my personality and attitude but more importantly it was theirs. It was based on exactly what they needed. So I would just say to look at that when you’re looking at branding and choosing a name and don’t let the domain name thing discourage you because it doesn’t have to. It’s totally something that’s still doable. So Angie’s thing, her people want real results. They want to keep it real. They want like common sense, nothing too crazy. They are not going to avoid chocolate cake for the rest of their lives, they won’t, and that’s not their thing. They want to live happy lives. They know that food should be eaten. But for her too that’s how she is. She’s had an amazing transformation, amazing journey but she sort of kept it real. So her thing, she’s calling her brand The Realist Nutritionist. So The Realist Nutritionist and it’s sort of that is that play on words, it’s fun, it’s so her and when people see it they automatically know like, “Oh this is the realist. She’s being realistic. She’s not going to have me do something crazy” and they automatically identify with her and that’s her target audience. That’s who she really wants to connect with. So for her, it’s amazing, branding. It’s a great name. I love, love, love that she’s using it. So just to give you an example really think about your ideal clients and your market and what would resonate with them.

Q: I know that you said we should try not to consume foods more than one time per week. Are there exceptions to this rule? Such as lemon juice water, olive oil, chia seed, avocado, coconut oil, grass fed butter. I’ve been really striving to vary my diet but wondering about the possible-?

A: It really depends on you. It’s great to vary your diet for sure. The popular food intolerances I would definitely limit so things like sugar, wheat, gluten, dairy, corn, peanuts, all of those top food intolerances I would definitely try to limit but there are other things like you know, avocado or chia seeds or things like that that you can eat more as long as your body agrees with it.

The best way to do this is just really tune in to your body and see how it’s responding. So we develop food intolerances. One way we develop them is by eating the same food over and over and over and over and over and we can develop an intolerance to that. We actually start craving these foods in a big way like really craving them like, “I’ve got to get me some avocado or it’s going to get ugly.” Really craving and that’s usually a

sign of a food intolerance. So you can do food intolerance testing or just be aware of your body. If you start feeling really tired after eating that food, if you start having digestive issues because of that, if your skin starts breaking out in any way, you start getting bloated, that might be an indication that you are experiencing a food intolerance in which case you could cut out that food for 4 to 6 weeks and then start cycling it back into your diet. You could start doing one of the rotation diets. So that’s what you want to be cautious about in terms of food intolerances, really just listen to your own body that’s honestly the best advice I could give you. I would avoid those top food intolerances though, eating those. If you don’t have an intolerance great, I would still watch how often you eat them though because you can develop an intolerance to them really quickly or sensitivity to them really quickly so be aware of that.

Night Tremors in Small Children

Q: I really enjoyed last week’s module on the need for different ages and stages of life. It’s turned out to be very informative for my own family. My question is: my ten-month old baby girl is experiencing night terrors. Could this possibly be some sort of deficiency? They just started two weeks ago after she received her last whooping cough vaccination. Do you have any thoughts on this? She’s normally a great sleeper but now we’re struggling to get a few hours due to these occurrences?

A: This one is so tough and I know because Rain had those crazy little night terrors for a little while too. And I’ll tell you what we think hers was. I don’t know that this is what it is for your little one, there’s been a lot of research around this, a lot of hypothesizing around this, some people believe that it’s just part of the mental and emotional and consciousness development of these little kids that that’s just part of it. And that’s what’s causing the night terrors. Some people believe it’s a different level of consciousness and that’s what’s causing it. Some people believe it’s food intolerances for the wee ones and that’s why these things happen. And some people think it’s vaccinations, it really runs the gamut. And there’s nothing that has been really proven in a big way, again there’s a lot of hypotheses out there but there’s nothing that’s really shown up in a big way to say this is what causes night terrors. I think we’re just sort of at the point where people say, “Yeah, that happens.” I’ll tell you what we did for Rain. She was around maybe 14 months so she was older than yours, 14-15 months and she started having these night terrors and they are just the craziest things, they just wake up screaming, you have no idea what’s going on and you’re like, “What? What happened?” But what happened with her, we’ve never been or

we were back in the day, but for a very long time we’ve not been into gluten. It’s not been our thing, we just haven’t eaten it. Well then we had a baby and things got a little crazy and we started slowly putting little amounts of gluten back into our diet and I was nursing Rain at that age and that’s when this all started. When I cut out the gluten foods again because they were just breads because breads are easy and we do like sandwiches because we were crazy and somebody gave us a baby and no instructions so we just were eating the easy foods. And so when I cut that out, her night terrors went away. Now I don’t know that that one thing had anything to do with the other one. It may not have. I can tell you that I’ve had friends and colleagues who’ve experienced the same thing with their little ones, you know the gluten thing and removing it and it not happening, but that doesn’t mean that that’s what caused it. You could try it for sure, you know I don’t know if she’s eating or munching on solid foods or not whatever, Rain was at the time, we didn’t give her any gluten foods it was just through me, but you could try that but other than that, everything is different. The vaccinations, I don’t know, that’s a whole other topic of debate and I wish I had specific answers for you trust me I do and I wish I had some answers for me back in the day, that’s how it worked for us. You can give it a try. I had a friend of mine who’s little one she’s also a holistic nutritionist and her little one started having night terrors and she did a complete organic acid panel on her and also some blood testing and looked at nutrient deficiencies because there is that theory and this took between the testing and getting her on the supplements, the little tiny baby supplements, it wasn’t really even supplements it’s like food based things, the whole process of getting them into her system, the testing probably took about eight weeks I guess, seven to eight weeks and they went away. But was it something she grew out of or like it was mental thing and she was just forming these synapses and then they formed during that eight weeks or was it really a vitamin deficiency. So, I know it’s crazy. I wish I could give you more specific information with the little ones though and these night terrors, we’re sort of left with sort of trying things to see if they work. I know that’s not a great answer and I apologize, I wish there were something better but yeah, that’s all we know.

Food Combining

Q: Is it okay to combine food in with our veggie juices and smoothies. I thought it was a no-no but everywhere there’s a recipe that combines fruits with veggies. What should I be doing?

A: There are a few different schools of thoughts about this. Food intolerance as we talked about, I don’t recommend eating fruit after meals, I recommend eating fruit alone, leaving an hour before and after a meal because fruits digest and process really quickly, it can ferment, it can make you gassy, and it can cause digestive issues which can interfere with nutrient absorption, so I don’t recommend that. In juices and smoothies, I’ve never seen anyone have an issue with that, ever. The only time I see that being a bit of an issue is when people will eat a meal and then have a smoothie right behind it. I’ve seen that been an issue. I haven’t really seen the juicing be an issue ever which makes sense if you think about it because the fermentation for the smoothies is one thing but for juices it’s juice so that’s obviously very different. The best answer to this is really what works for the individual person. You can get really crazy with food combining like really crazy and some people swear by it. There was this book that came out, many, many, many years ago written by Harvey Diamond and his wife, I think they sort of spawned separate nutrition practices but it was sort of a bible and it was really the first big introduction to food combining in a big sort of mass media way, Fit for Life, that’s what the book was called and it was written by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond who were married at the time. And it goes really into detail and so a bunch of people got onto this big movement of food combining and being really specific about it. Again it can get a little crazy, you can just Google food combining and look at the images and it gets a little wild. It’s totally fine if that works for you and if that’s what works for your client. I get the fruit thing and I recommend that, that you wait and eat that alone just because I’ve seen it over the years with hundreds and thousands of clients that they do better when it’s eaten that way but in terms of like the proteins and the grains and the dairy it just can get a little crazy. If it works, perfect and you can absolutely try that with your clients. What I found over the years is that it’s too hard for them to keep straight and they won’t do it. The fruit thing they’ll do, they get that but again in terms of your specific question veggie juices and smoothies, I haven’t seen such a big issue with that unless the smoothie was right after a meal.

Q: Is spring water the number one choice for drinking water? If that’s not available what’s the next best choice? I drink reverse osmosis water and add sea salt. How does that sound?

A: Quick answer is I completely agree with you and I would add something like juicing to the mix just so you’re getting all of those minerals because that’s really what you have to be concerned about with reverse osmosis but I would do the same exact thing. I completely agree with you if spring water isn’t available that would be the next best choice.
