OUR MAGAZINE (ANCILLARY)

• Our magazine is called Exposure, we created this name to compliment the idea that it is film related. This name suits the magazine, and is not genre-specific, so it will appeal to a wider target audience, better than a horror specific magazine would do.

• We have followed and used many of the codes and conventions commonly associated with Movie Magazines, and we did this to keep the layout as familiar as possible, so that people are more likely to buy it. For example, we included a large, bold masthead at the top of the page, which is likely to attract an audience to buy a familiar brand. In addition, we added a close up (head to top of shoulder) image of the protagonist, just as our target audience feedback suggested we do.

• However, we did try to challenge conventions, by diverting the model’s gaze off the page. This could potentially be setback, as many people buy a magazine when the model has caught their attention using direct mode of address. However, in this circumstance, I believe that the image works well in attracting a target audience because they may be curious to find out what she is looking at, as she has a mixed expression of fear and confusion. Overall, this magazine has been effective in promoting the movie.

OUR POSTER (ANCILLARY)

• A movie poster is used by promoters to attract a target audience to see a film with as little information as possible. Many posters only contain an image, billing block and an actors name.

• The image on our poster is of a high quality, as it was taken using a professional studio and a high-end DSLR. We really wanted to effectively draw in the audience, so we attempted to make the image as visually enticing as possible. By developing a disintegration effect for the model’s face, we created a striking image which encapsulated some of the movies themes. This can be effective as immediately the audience knows that they are looking at a thriller genre poster.

• In addition we followed the same colour scheme as the magazine, as this showed fluidity and created a brand with recognisability. For example, the magazine used the exact same ‘Perception’ title, as this created a familiarity for the audience. We tried to follow the blue, black and white colour scheme, as this is one that our target audience suggested that they prefer.

• We included two reviews at the top of the page, from trusted sources, and this should allow us to gain trust in the brand from the target audience.

OUR TRAILER (MAIN)

• The movie trailer that we created, consisted of a light introduction to the storyline, a developed plot and visual representation. It followed the codes and conventions of typical movie trailer, and it gave the audience a base to get familiar with the characters.

• In addition our trailer followed a chronological order, allowing the audience to see a logical chain of events. We decided to do this as it is the ‘first’ movie of a potential series, with all new characters and plot – so we decided it would be a bit easier to comprehend if we use a standard order.

• We used the same fonts in our trailer for captions and reviews, as we did on the magazine and poster. This continuity again adds to the effectiveness of portraying the magazine, poster and this trailer as a branded package. We also used the same font for the title, as this would be easier to recognise, even if the audience were passively watching.

• In conclusion, I feel that our movie promotional package has been effective in portraying the messages we wanted to, following a genre-specific colour scheme, continuity through fonts and promoting the main protagonist as the face of the movie. Overall this has been greatly effective as a combination as they are clearly shown to be made for each other with thought and clarity.
