Q2. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXT?

BY ALICE VENARD

DIGIPAK

As part of my ancillary texts, I created a digipak. It consisted of two disks, one regular and the other a deluxe video edition, a front cover, two inside panels, a spine and a back cover containing the tracklist and other relevant information. I followed the conventions when constructing my digipak, in order to create a indie/pop genre album.

PROMOTIONAL POSTER

Also as part of my ancillary texts, I

created a promotional magazine

advert for my artist’s album. I have

followed the conventions for the

product which include, album name,

artist name, image of the artist (same

as album front cover), release date,

included singles, where to buy,

record label, artist website and

reviews.

MAIN PRODUCT – MUSIC VIDEO

Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud ( Annie Harmeston Cover)

My main product (music video) revolves around a same sex relationship about a woman reflecting on this relationship for the viewer to find out at the end that her girlfriend is dead. It is set to ‘Thinking out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran, which acts as the main single across my ancillary texts. However, I decided to use Annie Harmeston’s version of the song, as it fit more with my artist being female. Although my music video is meant to be simplistic and natural, I have followed conventional features of music videos in relation to genre, cinematography, editing and mise-en-scene, in order for my product to look at realistic and professional as possible. There is continuity between my products due to it features the artist and on the two panels of my digipak I have included polaroid pictures which are screen grabs from my music video.

EFFECTIVE OR NOT?I feel the strongest/most effective part of my promotional package is my

ancillary texts. This is due to the fact that I have more experience with

working on still media and computer programs, such as Photoshop, due to

being heavily reliant on it during my foundation portfolio where I was asked

to construct a front cover, double page spread and contents page of a

music magazine. Because of this, I felt more comfortable with

experimenting and enhancing my existing knowledge of photoshop, in

order to be more creative and unique with my ancillary texts. However, I

still believe my music video is effective and compliments my ancillary texts

due to the continuity between fonts used and the simplistic nature of the

products, therefore appealing to my target audience.

The main things I had to consider when creating my promotional package in order for each product to be effect and there to be continuity were:

• A colour scheme• Style of presentation• An artist name and album title• What record label

• Imagery• Concept – love and sexuality• Main actress as artist in product• Reflects indie/pop genre

PEER FEEDBACKDo you find the combination of my main product and ancillary texts effective as a promotional package?

Amy – 18 years old:

“All the products link really well

together and look really effective

and professional as a promotional

package!”

Clement – 22 years old:

“Ancillary texts and video all link

together. I like how you’ve kept the

same font throughout which makes

the product stronger.”

Dylan – 16 years old:

“all the products go together as they

fit your videos simplistic theme which

you have used to represent your

theme of a lesbian relationship. But I

don’t think the album title fits.”

Natasha – 18 years old:

“I think your products fit the indie/pop

genre due to following the

conventions, which makes them an

overall effective product”
