Evaluation

By Arun Bhullar

Brief:

My task was to create a five minute documentary with 2 other pieces of ancillary products to promote five minute documentary (radio trailer and double page article) within a group.

In this PowerPoint I will answer these question which are evaluating the quality and effectiveness of my work…

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and

evaluation stages?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

One convention we decided to use is to keep all text the same to make the documentary look professional. In supersize we see how when introducing experts Morgan Spurlock is showing only names and professions of experts. This is usually located in the bottom corner of the video. We decided that it was best not to challenge this convention as it worked and any adaption or not following this convention could really damage the quality of work that we were producing. In our documentary we made a slight adaption as we only see the name for a short time and then it disappears this does not happen on ‘Supersize me’.

Another convention which was key in us as a group of putting across that cyber bullying was a vital issue in society was due to the range of expert interviews we had. Like supersize by him consulting 3 doctors he had different opinions on if it was safe to ‘binge’ on McDonald's. this helped him get across to the audience that obesity is key i

Similar to supersize me as a group we decided to put give our target market facts and figures to back up the seriousness of our subject. But unlike supersize me didn’t mention narrate the facts whilst Morgan Spurlock decided to have only some of the figures on his documentary this was one feature we did challenge as we thought that by giving no narration it would give a greater impact to the audience on the seriousness of cyberbullying.

One convention that as a group we decided to follow was the positioning of the expert interviews. From the two comparisons we can see how they are both where the name and job title presented in the same area at the bottom left of the screen. And the expert is positioned on the left. This is just like ‘Supersize Me’ when Morgan Spurlock interviews various expert and scientists talking about the seriousness of McDonalds on society which helps back up Morgan Spurlock’s points.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Similar to the article that I analysed, as a group we decided that another convention that we would use is the information that was presented in a different font and bold in a different colour. As our article was designed as a promotional piece of text by giving informative texts like this one, our target audience is more likely to be attracted into wanting to watch and will have information to watch the documentary.

Most articles that are aimed at and older audience start their articles with the first letter bigger than the rest of the text. So as a group we decided too make the ancillary product more professional and suitable for our target audience we decided it was best not to challenge this for our audience.

Like most articles bylines are included to help draw/attract target audience to read into the article further. So to make sure that our target audience didn’t ignore our text we decide it was best for us to use it. We also didn’t challenge the position of the byline as it usually placed under the headline and above the text.

As our audience was a slightly older audience but not old enough to have pages worth of articles we decided to have one page that images on to make sure our target audience didn’t get bored. However we decided that we were going to develop have one big image by having several smaller images as it would attract the audience because it would be more colourful.

After doing some research by listening to other radio trailers we found a common convention that most of the trailers had followed and decided not to challenge was where the information was given. Most trailers gave the information to the TV show they were trying to promote at the end. So therefore as group we left the information at the end as it may have bored the target audience from listening further.

Page 11: Q1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

One way in which our media product did challenge conventions is that unlike some of the radio trailers we listened to our radio trailer was not free flowing. Our radio trailer made comments then stopped whilst the music was playing then another comment was made. We thought that this could give a greater emphasis on the fact that cyber bullying was a key issue.

Deliberate gaps left between each clip for greater effect on target audience

Another convention which was not advised to challenge was the sound levels when people where speaking. The convention that is usually followed here is that when someone spoke the music would faded out and become faint but when know one was speaking it faded in. we couldn't find any other way of devolving this convention and challenging it meant having people speak on the radio trailer but not be heard.

Options such as these helped guarantee sound could be edited and locked to so it remained the same
