Dinner:“TasteofScotland”atPrestonfieldHouseThe“TasteofScotland”isaScottishEveningmusicalreviewatPrestonfieldHouse.PrestonfieldHouseitselfwasoriginallybuiltin1687byarchitectSirWilliamBruce,andwasonceawealthyruralestate,butinrecentdecadeshascometobea5-starhotel.SituatedonextensivegroundsatthefootofArthur'sSeat,PrestonfieldHousealsoownsalargeroundhouse,whichwaspreviouslyusedforkeepinghorses.Thenow-convertedstablesareusedtohostlargefunctions,oneexamplebeingtheTasteofScotlandEvening.We’llleavethehotelintimefor6:00drinksattheactualhistoricandelegantPrestonfieldHouse,andthenwalkthefewstepstotheadjoiningstableblockforthePrestonfieldShow,amusicalextravaganza,takingyouthroughthehistoryofScotland.

AfterbreakfastweheadsouthoutofEdinburghfortheBorders.We’llstopfirstatRosalynChapel,abouta20-minutedriveoutsideofEdinburgh,afancifullycarvedchurchmadefamousbythepopularnovelandfilm,“TheDaVinciCode.”There’sateashopandgiftstorethereandtalksaregiveninsidethechapeltogiveanexcellenthistory.

NextwewillheaddowntoAbbotsfordHouse,homeofthefamousScottishauthor,SirWalterScott,whopopularizedScottishhistoryandfolktaleswithhisnovelsandpoemsduringthe18thcentury.Createdalmost200yearsagoonthebanksoftheRiverTweedintheScottishBorders,AbbotsfordwastheculminationofScott’screativeambitionsasawriterandthefountofhisinspiration.Heassembledatreasuretroveofintriguingobjectsandunusualartifactswhichinspiredhispoemsandnovels.Thereisalittlelunchroomatthevisitor’scenterinAbbotsfordforlunchonyourown.
Afterlunchwewilltakeafabulousdrivealongasmallcountryroad,whichwindsandcurvesthroughthebeautifulBorderscountryside.Wewillpasssheep,cattle,andfarmsteads.Also,St.Mary’sLochandtheGreyMare’sTailWaterfall.OurdestinationisMelrosewherewewillvisitMelroseAbbey,abeautifulruinintheheartofthehistoricvillageofMelrose.MelroseAbbeywasfoundedin1136byCistercianmonksattherequestofKindDavidI.ofScotland.AlexanderIIandotherScottishkingsareburiedattheabbey.AleadcontainerbelievedtoholdtheembalmedheartofRoberttheBrucewasfoundin1921belowtheChapterHouse.TherestofhisbodyisburiedinDunfermlineAbbey.TheheartwasbroughtbackfromtheCrusadesbySirRobertDouglasin1330/31.
Theabbeyisknownforitsmanycarveddecorativedetails,includinglikenessesofsaints,dragons,gargoylesandplants.Ononeoftheabbey'sstairwaysisaninscriptionbyJohnMorow,amastermason,whichsays,Behaldetoyehende("Keepinmind,theend,yoursalvation").ThishasbecomethemottoofthetownofMelrose.
In1544,asEnglisharmiesragedacrossScotlandinanefforttoforcetheScotstoallowtheinfantMary,QueenofScotstomarrythesonofHenryVIII,theabbeywasbadlydamagedandwasneverfullyrepaired.Itwithstoodonefinalassault—abombardmentbyOliverCromwellduringtheEnglishCivilWar.Atthebeginningofthe19thc.SirWalterScottwasappointedSheriff-DeputeofRoxsburgshireandsupervisedextensiverepairworktopreservetheruins.
Toendtheday,wewillhavedinnerattheAnnandaleArmsinMoffattwhichhaswonseveralculinaryawards.ThursdaynightsarefolksingingnightsattheAnnandale,andafterdinnerwecanrepairtothebartolistentolocalmusiciansweavetheirmagic,singingmanyofthesongsthatweknowandlove.

Day5:Friday,July12:Hadrian’sWall,Brampton&Carlisle,EnglandAfterbreakfastatourhotel,wewillheadtoHadrian’sWall,builtbytheRomans.ItisobservedthatitwasattheRomanWallthatthespiritandcharacteroftheScotswasforged.(SeeJamesWebb,BornFighting.)ThewallundulatesasitstretchesacrosstherollinghillsoftheBordersfromoneedgeofScotlandand/orEnglandtotheother.Wewillvisit,Vindolanda,siteofaworkingarcheologicaldigandanoutstandingmuseum.Theearliestknownwritingwasdiscoveredhereburiedunderneathcenturiesofearthandthereisanoutstandingfilmtotellthestory.IfthereistimewewillvisitthelittleEnglishmarkettownofBrampton,wherethereisacharmingantiqueshopandnexttoitSt.Martin’sChurch.Attheantiqueshop,MarthalikestoshopforantiqueScottishbroaches,whichsheiscollecting,butonlythe“goodfinds”tempther.Nextdoor,StMartin’sChurchisfamousastheonlychurchdesignedbythePre-RaphaelitearchitectPhilipWebb,andcontainsoneofthemostexquisitesetsofstainedglasswindowsdesignedbySirEdwardBurne-Jones,andexecutedintheWilliamMorrisstudio.SirNikolausPevsnerdescribeditasa‘remarkablebuilding,thewindowsglowingwithgem-stonecolours’.

AshortdrivewilltakeustoCarlisle,atownthatisheirtoacomplicatedBorderhistory,fromtheRomanswhobuiltaforthereinAD72totheBorderReiverswhoterrorizedthe“debatablelands”inthe16thcentury.Hope’stwochildrenattendschoolinCarlisle,soheknowsthetownwell.Herewe’llhaveachoice,dependingontimeremaining,oftouringthreesitesintheoldcitycentre:(1)theTullieHouseMuseum,aregionalmuseumwithaneclectic,family-stylecollectionwhichincludesaspecialdisplayontheBorderReivers,theRomans,andalsoawonderfulcollectionofWilliamMorrisitems.Then,(2)thereistheimposingCarlisleCastle,oncebesiegedbyRoberttheBruce,andaccessiblefromTullieHousebyanundergroundwalkway.Thecastleisover900yearsoldandhasbeenthesceneofmanyhistoricalepisodesinBritishhistory.GiventheproximityofCarlisletotheborderbetweenEnglandandScotland,ithasbeenthecentreofmanywarsandinvasions.TodaythecastleismanagedbyEnglishHeritageandisopentothepublic.ThecastleuntilrecentlywastheadministrativeheadquartersoftheformerKing'sOwnRoyalBorderRegimentnowcountyheadquarterstotheDukeofLancaster'sRegimentandamuseumtotheregimentiswithinthecastlewalls.Finally(3)thereisCarlisleCathedralwithitssutureofRomanesqueandGothicarchitecture,whereHopecanarrangeaprivatetourforus.TheCathedralChurchoftheHolyandUndividedTrinity,otherwisecalledCarlisleCathedral,istheseatoftheAnglicanBishopofCarlisle.ItwasfoundedasanAugustinianprioryandbecameacathedralin1133.Itisthesecondsmallest(afterOxford)ofEngland'sancientcathedrals.Itsnotablefeaturesincludesomefinefigurativestonecarving,asetofmedievalchoirstallsandthelargestwindowinthe“FlowingDecorated”GothicinEngland.IthasstoodontheborderwithScotlandforalmost900years.DinneronowninCarlisle.Hopewillfindusalikelyplace.WewillthenreturntoDumfries.Overnight:Dumfries:tbd

Afterbreakfastatthehotel,wewilldrivewesttoAyrshireandthecharmingRobertBurnsBirthplaceMuseum.RobertBurnswasbornonJanuary25,1759,inthe“auldcleybiggin”thatisknownasBurnsCottage.Ofhumblebirth,BurnswentontobecomeoneofthemostbelovedScottishpoetsofalltimeandhobnobbedwiththeintellectualeliteofEdinburgh.Themuseumpresentshislifeandachievementsinawonderful,livelymanner.Nearbyisthehousewherehewasborn,theAllowayKirk,andTheBurnsMonumentandGardens.Lessthan20yearsafterBurns’death,acommitteeofhisstrongestsupporterswerebusymakingplanstomemorializetheman.Theresultisa70-foothighGrecian-styletemple,designedbySirThomasHamilton,completewithninepillarsrepresentingmusesfromGreekmythology.Itissurroundedbylovelygardens.Themonumentwasfundedbysubscriptionsandfinishedin1823.TheBurnsMuseumhasanicelittlecaféwhereyoucanhaveaninformallunchonyourown.DinneratTamO’ShanterPubcaféinAyr,onyourown.RobertBurnsfrequentedthepubanditwasherethathewrotehisfamouspoem.Overnight:Dumfries:tbd

IfthereistimewhileweareintheBorders,wemayvisitHope’sfamilyhome,thehistoriccountryhouse,Barbeth,locatedinNewAbbey,Dumfriesshire.Thehouseisfurnishedwithperiodantiques,includingcarvedchairsfromthe16thcenturyandthepianoofafamilyfriendSirHarryLauderwhocomposedsomeofScotland’sbestlovedsongsonthisuprightgrand,including“Ilovealassie.”HopeVereisanantiquesandartsappraiserandthehousereflectshistasteandhiscollectingovertheyears.Thepaintingsinthehouseincludethefamousunfinishedstudy“PortraitofSirWinstonChurchill,”andthe“BattleofBannockburn”byRobertEadieRSA.ThefarmofBarbethincludesKnockendochHillandCriffelhillforestryfarmland,andsince2016ahydroelectricplantwhichproduceselectricityforthenationalgrid.
ThepresentmainhousewasbuiltintheRegencyperiod,1820,andistheworkofrenownedarchitectWalterNewall.Someofthebuildingsdatetothe15thcentury.ThefirstrecordingofresidentsatBarbethwasawitnesstoadeedsignedatBarbethinthe14th.Century,althoughthelandswerepartofthenearbySweetheartAbbeylands.TheseAbbeylandsdatefromthe12thcenturyandtheoriginalbuildingsandruinsofavillagecanstillbeseenintheforest.TheBaronyassociatedwithBarbethisknownasTheBaronyofLochKinderlochandthehouseoverlooksLochKinder.TheBaronyofBannockburnismorepreeminentthanthatofKinderlochandthereforethedignityofBannockburnisusedbythefamily.Day7:Sunday,July14:Ireland&theUlster-Scots

AfterbreakfastwewillheadnorthtowardLondonderry,stoppingfirstattheMussendenTempleatDownhill.Thetemplewasbuiltin1785andformspartoftheestateofFrederickAugustusHervey,BishopofDerryandEarlofBristol(ortheEarlBishop).ThetemplewasbuiltasasummerlibraryanditsarchitecturewasinspiredbytheTempleofVestainTivoli,nearRome.ItisdedicatedtothememoryofHervey'scousinMrs.FrideswideMussenden.
BoththeTempleandthesurroundingviewsareamongthemostphotographedscenesinIreland.OvertheyearstheTempleitselfwasunderdangerofbeinglosttotheseaduetotheerosionofthecliffwhichbroughtMussendenTempleeverclosertotheedge.In1997theNationalTrustthencarriedoutcliffstabilisationworktopreventthelossofthislovelybuilding.
