Andy Bondy, Ph.D., has over 30 years experience working with chil-dren and adults with autism and related developmental disabilities. For more than a dozen years he served as the Director of the Statewide Delaware Autistic Program. He and his wife, Lori Frost, pioneered the development of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Based upon principles described in Skinner’s Verbal Behavior, the sys-tem gradually moves from relatively simple yet spontaneous request to commenting with multiple aributes. He has designed the Pyramid Approach to Education (with Beth Sulzer-Azaroff) as a comprehen-sive combination of broad-spectrum behavior analysis and functional communication strategies. This approach aims to help professionals and parents design effective educational environments for children and adults with developmental disabilities within school, community, and home seings. This system has guided the design and implementation in scores of classrooms for students with autism and related disabilities throughout the US and internationally. He is the co-founder of Pyramid Educational Consultants, Inc., an internationally based team of special-ists from many fields working together to promote integration of the principles of applied behavior analysis within functional activities with an emphasis on developing functional communication skills indepen-dent of modality.

Lori A. Frost, M.S., C.C.C., is co-founder of Pyramid Educational Consultants, with offices in the U.S., the U.K, Australia, France, Peru and Canada. She is a speech/language pathologist certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has over 20 years experience working with children and adults with autism and related disabilities. Lori is co-developer of the Picture Exchange Communi-cation System, the unique augmentative/alternative communication system that is used worldwide with children and adults who have difficulty using speech as a primary mode of communication. Along with Andrew Bondy, Ph.D., Lori has authored The Picture Exchange Communication System Training Manual, The Picture Exchange Com-munication System Training Manual –2nd Edition (Pyramid

Educational Products, Inc.), A Picture’s Worth: PECS and Other Visual Communication Strategies in Autism (Woodbine House), and numer-ous journal articles. Lori has taught graduate courses in communica-tion training and has led regional, national and international confer-ences and workshops. She consults to programs regarding the creation of effective programs in which functional communication skills can be taught. She has designed a variety of products that help families and professionals to more easily teach and live with individuals with dis-abilities.

Break, Wait, and Help CardsAll the cards are made of a durable synthetic

material to withstand heavy use. Break Cards: Everyone needs a way

to request a break. Break cards are an

excellent way to teach nonverbal students a calm way to do so. We include loop Velcoins® to aach wherever needed.

Wait Card: Dr. Bondy and Lori Frost have developed this card and a method of visually

teaching the concept of waiting. Children are handed the card when they are asked to wait.

The card acts as a promissory note for the item requested. Instructions for teaching this concept are printed on the back of the card.Help Card: A companion to our break and wait cards, help cards are durable hand-shaped cards with the word “help” silk screened on them. Mini Set: Set includes 5 mini break cards, 2 mini help cards, and 2 mini wait cards.Break Cards (set of 10) BRK $12 Wait Card WAI $5Help Card HLP $4 Mini Set MHB $10

Instructors who use Differential Reinforcement Systems will find these CDs essential. Pop a CD into your CD player, select the track accord-ing to the interval you need, and repeat the track for a continuous reminder to catch your students “being good!” CD #1 has 1, 2, 3, and 5-minute intervals. CD #2 has 7 and 10-minute intervals. CD #3 has 15-minute intervals. Each track plays a distinct tone so that you can play more than one CD at a time for students need-ing different intervals and recognize which interval is sounding. Each tone is activated on a randomized, variable schedule (the three-minute tone sounds on average every three minutes). These tones also are a great tool for instructors who are teaching children to monitor their own behavior.

A Picture’s Worth: PECS and Other Visual Com-munication Strategies in Autism, wrien by our very own Andy Bondy and Lori Frost, examines the value of nonverbal communication strategies for children with autism, and describes the Pic-ture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Aer a thorough review of verbal communica-tion development, A Picture’s Worth explains how autism affects the acquisition and progression of those skills. Without the ability to express themselves, children with autism experience a high level of frustration, which is the root cause of many undesirable behaviors. The book explores the relationship between behavior and communication, teaching parents how to recognize paerns in their own child’s behavior and when to begin a visual communication program such as PECS. Bondy and Frost describe the six phases of training in PECS and provide many real-life case studies, along with a complete series of lessons, from beginner to more advanced PECS techniques.
