PYP Exhibition Information for Parents
What is the Exhibition?
The Exhibition is the culmination, the summing up, of the PYP.
The idea is that the Exhibition should draw on all the things students have learned, and all the skills they have developed over their schooling experience.
This isn’t just a major project for Grade 5. Students need to make a personal connection with their topic.
Exhibition is the opportunity for students to show the community who they are and what they can contribute through taking action.
The theme
This year’s theme is How We Organize Ourselves
The Central Idea is: By organizing ourselves to take action, we can make a positive change.
Elements
The IB has set out four distinct components for a successful Exhibition.
Written
Oral
Visual (some form of artistic expression)
Information Communication Technology
Students will have a variety of options for presenting their understanding and the Grade 5 classes have put together as a fantastic and fairly comprehensive list.
So, what will success look like?
Students will demonstrate a deep understanding of their chosen theme.
The project will have a personal connection for the student and will address both local and global perspectives.
There is a clear direction for the action element, and the action taken will be sustainable.
Students will show development in their thinking and communication skills. This will look slightly different for each child as every student is unique and is at a different point in their learning journey.
Communication
Open communication is vital to the success of your child in the Exhibition.
If there is an issue, the Grade 5 team would like to address it immediately and provide support to the student. Sometimes a little clarification is all that is needed to get students back on track.
Save the Date...
The Exhibition date is the 28 May.
Grade 5 will be presenting to fellow students during the day.
In the afternoon they will present to our wider school community - including parents, staff, and community members.
How can you get involved?
The role of the parent in the Exhibition is vital.
Students need a level of support so they can be independent.
Discussing your child’s project and what progress they are making by looking at their Process Journal is very important. This gives students another audience to help them clarify their understanding.
Try to resist the temptation to be ‘hands on’ and instead suggest alternatives when your child gets stuck or
Skills for Success
All year Grade 5 has been working on time-management, organization, goal setting and reflection.
Students have a variety of tools to help them with this; schedules, graphic organizers, online tools, etc.
Each small group has a mentor to help guide them in addition to the teaching team, this person also helps support students in using these skills to create a successful Exhibition experience.
BalanceThere is structure within the curriculum to assist students in maintaining a balanced sense of perspective, as well as allowing for development across the learning areas, for example, Mathematics will still be taught during this time.
Physical Education has a focus on supporting students through exercise to help manage stress levels.
Regular extra-curricular activities are also encouraged, dependent upon your child’s individual needs. In many cases, students need help in finding ways to use their time more effectively, rather than spending lots of time on a single task. The Process Journal will help provide focus for students.
