SPORT AND VENUES PyeongChangs All Within 30 Minutes concept
guarantees that all Competition Venues take only a maximum of 30

The two Clusters will be linked with a highly sophisticated
three-layered transportation net-work that will make it easy for
athletes and officials to quickly travel to all Venues, and both

SPORTS ET SITESSPORT AND VENUES
SPORT & VENUES
The 2014 PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic WinterGames will be
celebrated to the fullest as anathlete-focused festival of human
achievement. We willoffer athletes the very best competition,
training andaccommodation facilities all within a
breathtakinglybeautiful natural environment, and will ensure
allmembers of the Olympic Family, as well as volunteers, supporters,
media and sponsors, are able to enjoy theathletes achievements
safely and in pleasantsurroundings.
Korea has vast experience in hosting internationalsporting
events, and is well known around the world for itssuccess in
organising these competitions. Indeed, eventssuch as the 1988 Seoul
Olympics and the 2002 FIFA WorldCup Korea/Japan have actually been
benchmarked byother countries who wish to follow in Koreas
footsteps. With our expertise to guide us, and by working in
closecooperation with the IOC and the IFs, the excellence of
the2014 PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic WinterGames is
guaranteed.
One of our main goals in the planning of Venues was toreduce the
travel time of athletes. This goal will beachieved with the
building of two main ClustersthePyeongChang Cluster and the
Gangneung Clusterwithin30 minutes of each other. In addition, all
Venues, as wellas the Olympic and Media Villages, will be situated
alongthe Yeongdong Expressway and conveniently linked by
amulti-modal transportation infrastructure.
Importantly, this single compact layout concept willfacilitate
sustainable development, an important legacy ofthe PyeongChang
Games. In particular, existing facilitieswill be used as much as
possible to minimise negativeenvironmental impact, and the
Gangneung Ice HockeyVenue I will be undertaken as a Special
Solidarity Projectin the region. Temporarily built on leased land,
theGangneung Ice Hockey Venue I will be dismantled andpermanently
rebuilt on the campus of Halla University inWonju City after the
Games are over, remaining as astrong Olympic Legacy. Wonju is a
highly populatedmetropolitan area located nearby the Host
CityPyeongChang, and is considered the ideal location forpromotion
of Ice Hockey.
The Games are planned to be held during students wintervacation
period. This timing will allow for more volunteerparticipation
among foreign-language proficient students.Greater spectator
turn-out is also guaranteed during thisperiodallowing athletes to
enjoy vigorous support fromenthusiastic and fair-minded winter
sports fans.
There will be two Olympic Villages at the PyeongChangGames, and
both will be designed in accordance with theOlympic Charter to meet
the unique needs of all athletes. One Village will be located in the
Host City ofPyeongChang, just one kilometre from the
OlympicStadium, and the other Village will be located in thenearby
city of Gangneung. Both Villages will provideathletes with privacy,
comfort, convenience and highsecurity. And in line with the IOCs
goal of holding a moreenvironmentally-friendly Games,
green-orientedstrategies will be implemented to ensure the
athleteswell-being and the health of the local ecology.
The Paralympic Games will enjoy the same high-levelservice.
Barrier-free Venues supported by accessibletransportation
infrastructures will be fully planned andimplemented. We will
ensure that Paralympic athletes areoffered the very best in
competition, training andaccommodation facilities, and that they
can enjoy theirachievements in a friendly, welcoming environment.
Ourwork in this area, and its potential to change societysbehaviour
and attitude toward people with a disability, is of major
importance, and is something that we take very seriously.
