Writing Class At Th e Library For Th e Young Writers
Shiver me timbers! Th rown on your breeches, tricorne hat and eye patch, matey! Hoist the Jolly Roger, raise the anchor, and sail off in a galleon with this rascally crew.
Th e Nelson Public Library invites young writers to raid their imaginations and fi nd the buried treasure in a special six-week series for kids who love to write stories with pirate-instructor Eileen Holland. Th e series begins Tueday, April 24.
Eileen, an elementary school teacher of 32 years, earned the handle ‘the writing teacher’ in her last school. She won the Emerging Children’s Writer category of the 2002 BC Festival of the Arts, and has been published in magazines,
newspapers and anthologies. She also knows how to have fun: Eileen’s students may be encouraged to act out scenes to help a story come to life.
In the fi rst three sessions – Pirates of the Carrots and Beans – it’s edible treasure under fi re. Students get to playwith their food while they play with the theme, and cap-ture some scrumptious storytelling.
Th e second half – Th at Bird Stole My Ginger Chicken Ball! – is sure to ruffl e feathers and fi re imaginations. Ever had a bird steal food from you? Got a scar inside your mouth to prove it? Eileen Holland does! Aft er sharing stories of bird thievery together, great ideas are bound to take fl ight.
Sessions are Tuesdays at 3:30 pm in the program room for the duration of the series. Pre-registration is required, as class size is limited. A fee of $15 is requested to help off -set costs. Contact the Nelson Library for more informa-tion or to register at 250-352-6333 or email [email protected]

Wildly Jumbo, Wildly CreativeResponding to the province’s approval of the Master De-
velopment Plan for Jumbo Glacier Resort, the West Koote-nay Coalition for Jumbo Wild! is once again getting active. Th e coalition is composed of local environmental, natural-ist, outdoors and social justice groups.
At the Sunday, March 25, rally in Nelson, over 200 people came out to express their support for Jumbo Wild! Th e coalition invites other groups to join them and for in-dividuals to get creative in their response to the govern-ment approval of Jumbo’s Master Plan. Already, a choir performance is in the works for Jumbo Pass this summer and an art book project is gaining momentum as well.
Th e resort development proposal would put over 6,000 beds into the Jumbo valley as well as 23 lift s and all the amenities of a small city. “In polls, petitions, and letters, thousands of Koo-tenay residents have voiced their support for Jumbo Wild!” said K.Linda Kivi. “Now it’s time to get creative to help us acti-vate the public and raise funds.” Kivi is the editor of the an-thology Th e Purcell Suite: Upholding the Wild which continues to sell as a fundraiser in support of the Jumbo Wild! campaign.

Deconstructing Dinner Film FestivalDespite having long chosen the audio format to com-
municate all issues food, past producer/host Jon Stein-man of the Deconstructing Dinner radio show/podcast was always impressed at the immense power of fi lm to inspire and stimulate change.
Coming this April, Steinman will be launching the 2012 Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival. Th e festival will feature six fi lms on food spread out over three even-ings at two locations. An oyster-themed evening will en-sure some good food is shared too!
Headlining the festival on Th ursday, April 5, 6:30 pm at the Capitol Th eatre will be the sneak peek of the an-ticipated Deconstructing Dinner television-web series which Steinman has been working on alongside former Kootenay resident and award-winning producer Declan O’Driscoll. Th is short pilot episode for the series features celebrated Canadian chef Michael Stadtlander. Titled: Harmful or Hopeful Ham? Th e production examines the risks of the industrial production of pork and features farmers who are choosing a diff erent path by paying greater attention to issues of food safety, animal welfare, human health and fl avour. Th e fi lm is being presented by Kootenay Co-op Radio. Th is will be Deconstructing Din-ner’s fi rst time on the big screen!
Presented by BiBo, Truck Farm is another great short to catch. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Ian Cheney set out to plant a vegetable garden in the bed of his grandfather’s 1986 Dodge truck! Th e mobile garden project soon grew when Ian and collaborator Curt Ellis turned Truck Farm into a 20-member CSA (community supported agriculture) project, marketing their produce to residents of Manhat-tan and Brooklyn. From the co-creators of King Corn, Truck Farm tells the story of an old Dodge, a new kind of farming, and the future of food in the city.
Th e festival’s only Canadian feature-length documen-tary is a humbling and greatly important insight into the challenges faced by the many young farmers across Can-ada who have chosen the noble role of feeding the rest of us. To Make a Farm (8:30 pm) features a season in the life of two Ontario couples and an intrepid young Manitoba man whose challenges and daily setbacks remind us of the importance of supporting young farmers here in the Kootenays and abroad. Presented by the Kootenay Coun-try Store Co-op.
With the bulk of the diet for most Kootenay resi-dents being of terrestrial origin, it’s easy to forget about our marine food sources and their role in maintaining healthy oceans and a healthy planet. On Wednesday, April 18, 7 pm at the Royal on Baker, an oyster-themed evening is planned to direct attention to this sought aft er yet poorly understood keystone species. Th e evening will open with a short from fi lmmaker Emily Driscoll. Shell-shocked follows eff orts to prevent the extinction of wild oyster reefs, which keep our oceans healthy by fi ltering water and engineering ecosystems. Also in attendance will be Kootenay resident Brent “Th e Oyster Man” Pet-kau who will share his passion for the oyster and why he cultivates and harvests oysters on Cortes Island. Brent will also be off ering a two-buck-a-shuck oyster bar and the Nelson Brewing Company is pairing their Oatmeal Stout with the oysters.
Two feature-length fi lms fi ll the schedule for Th ursday, April 19 at the Capitol Th eatre. With plastic having be-come such a staple ingredient of our food (system), no fi lm better captures the absurdity of our cultural love af-fair with plastics than Bag It (6:30 pm). Winning awardsall over the United States, Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he navigates our plastic world. When Jeb fi nds out he and his partner are expecting a child, his plastic odyssey becomes a truly personal one. Th is is both an entertaining and change-provoking fi lm being presented by the Kootenay Country Store Co-op.
Rounding off the festival at the Capitol is a perfect opening to the planting season. Presented by the Koote-nay Bakery Café, Urban Roots (8:30 pm) is produced by Leila Conners (Th e 11th Hour) and Mathew Schmid. Th e fi lm follows the urban farming phenomenon in Detroit and speaks to a nation grappling with collapsed indus-trial towns and the need to forge a diff erent future. In many ways, the urban farmers in Detroit are like most of us in that we are all experiencing the painful transi-tion from the industrial, centralized world to a post-in-dustrial world in which the jobs are changing, the econ-omy is changing, the neighborhoods are changing and it seems like we have no control over the outcome. Th is is a hopeful story demonstrating how we can all take control of our food supply.
“I’m tremendously excited to host this fi lm festival here in the Kootenays,” says Jon Steinman. “Th ere is so much passion, knowledge and skills found among the people here that spells out a promising future of good food for all of us. Coming together to be inspired together and create this new reality is what this fi lm festival is all about.”
More information on the festival can be found online at www.deconstructingdinner.com. Tickets are available at Otter Books and the Capitol Th eatre in Nelson.

Kootenay Lake Boating SurveyHuman, plant and ani-
mal life, and social de-velopment are all in-conceivable without the presence of quality water and healthy aquatic eco-systems. Residents, vaca-tioners, tourists, fishers, and boaters all recognize the inherent and unique beauty of Kootenay Lake and the West Arm. As an important habitat to doz-ens of species of animals and plant life, a source of drinking water for thou-sands, and a year-round recreation and tourism destination, Kootenay Lake is vital to life, well-being, and health.
When ecosystems break down, and water quality de-teriorates, the benefits for the population are reduced accordingly. Water has no substitute. Without careful stewardship, Kootenay Lake
is vulnerable to negative impacts of human activ-ities, including boating.
Kootenay Lake Sus-tainable Boating Society (KLSB) is a non-profit citizens’ group focused on sustainability of boating on Kootenay Lake, includ-ing protecting the mar-ine environment in and around Kootenay Lake. The Society is currently conducting a feasibility study regarding installing sewage pump-out sta-tions on the Lake and the West Arm to help boaters protect the lake environ-ment by preventing the discharge of boat sewage into the lake. Many other jurisdictions already have mandatory “no discharge” protocols in place in rec-ognition of the import-ance of maintaining the health of their waterways.
To date, the only no-dis-charge location on Koote-nay Lake is Pilot Bay.
Increases in tourist visitsand activity on the lake, and a trend to more andbigger boats, enhancesthe local economy; how-ever they can also have adirect impact on the en-vironmental health of thelake. Some of these im-pacts may be controlled, regulated, or directed sothat these possibly harm-ful effects can be avoided;where resource integrityis maintained or even en-hanced, all users of thelake will benefit.
With support fromRDCK, Kootenay LakeSailing Association, andKuskanook Harbour aboaters’ survey has beendeveloped. Boaters areinvited to visit www.klsb.org to complete the sur-vey and add comments orquestions.

Selkirk College’s Annual Business Competition
Th e dust has cleared aft er an intense contest and the best and brightest of Selkirk College’s Business Administration program have shone through as winners of the 7th Annual Business Competition.
Held on Th ursday, March 15, the Business Competition challenged fi rst and second year business students to re-search and present solutions to business problems. First-year students had to come up with a marketing strategy for the Selkirk Saints hockey team, while second-year stu-dents researched how to put on a bridal showcase.
Fourteen teams of fi rst-year students faced off and pre-sented their Selkirk Saints marketing campaigns through interactive displays in a trade-fair format. Booths con-tained everything from on-screen displays to mini hockey games and a home-made Selkirk Saints computer game.
A team of three judges from the local business com-munity scored their work and in the end, Kootenay Sports Management – Katherine Barrera, Sarah Rintoul and Rob Squires – took fi rst place. Synergy Consulting – Brit-tany Horswill, Erik Martin and Lauren Zanier – came in second place and Overtime Innovations – Guy Dilena, Cameron Opperman and Shawn Reichert – scored third place. Kootenay Sports Management also won students’ choice award.
“I have been judging the fi rst-year marketing students for the past six years and students are always under a lot of pressure,” says Marketing Competition judge and Selkirk College Program Marketing Coordinator, Sharon Stod-dart. “Th is year, students came up with some innovative ideas for marketing our Saints hockey team that can be implemented right away.”
Six second-year teams competed in the Business Case Competition and presented their take on a bridal show-case scenario directly to four judges from the local busi-ness community. While the judges said their decision was a diffi cult one because all the teams did very well, in the end BETS Incorporated – Todd Hoodicoff , Brielle Hwal-stad, Evan Richtsfeld and Sam Th or-Larsen – took fi rst place and students’ choice award.
Th ey were followed by BEST Consulting – Scott Jago, Teresa Mah, Erika Swanson, and Breeanne van Zanden – in second place and New-Mark – Alex Donaldson, Amanda Fulton, Lindsay Kooznetsoff and Dakota Moreau – in third place. Th e judges chose Brielle Hwalstad as the top student in the Business Administration program for 2012.
“Compared to the previous competitions, what was most outstanding was the level of teamwork and collaboration that was demonstrated,” said the Business Case Competi-tion judges in a statement.
Program Advisor for Business Administration, Tiff any Snauwaert said this year’s competition was a bit of an ex-
periment with the change to a trade-fair format, but she’s pleased with the results.
“It was intense and stressful for the students, but it was really good practice for their future careers in business,” says Snauwaert. “It was a very good active learning ex-perience. It exposed them to a real-life scenario in a con-trolled environment.”
“My participation in the 2012 Business Competition was a great experience,” says fi rst-year business administration student, Justin Sotkowy. “I think Selkirk has presented stu-dents with a great opportunity to showcase the skills they have acquired in a realistic environment.”
Winning teams won certifi cates, tuition vouchers and cash prizes in the competition, and a number of other door prizes were handed out at the event.
Selkirk College’s two-year Diploma of Business Admin-istration is unique in that it off ers a business competition with mandatory participation for all students.

Dispelling Fraud MythsEvery year, thousands of Canadians fall victim to credit
card and debit card fraud, telemarketing scams, identity theft and online fraud. While Canadians may be aware of fraud, many don’t know how to protect themselves from it. Justin Hwang, Associate Vice President, Fraud Manage-ment, TD Canada Trust dispels three of the most common fraud myths:
1. Myth: Your bank needs to know your Personal Identi-fi cation Number (PIN)
Your bank will never ask you for your PIN. Do not give out your PIN to anyone whether over the phone, on the Internet or by mail. No one except you should know your PIN—not even your fi nancial institution. Avoid writing it down or carrying it in your wallet, and be sure to shield the keypad whenever you enter your PIN for transactions.
2. Myth: You are not responsible for preventing fraudWhile it’s true that banks and credit card companies
have security measures in place to help protect you and will reimburse you if you are a victim of fraud, remember you are the fi rst line of defence. Th e majority of fraud can be avoided if you remain vigilant and take simple steps like always shielding your PIN, monitoring your account activity regularly and reporting any suspicious activity to your fi nancial institution immediately.
3. Myth: Th e anti-virus and anti-spyware soft ware on your computer is suffi cient to protect your personal information
Anti-virus and internet security soft ware only helps pro-tect your personal information if it is up-to-date, and if it has the latest fi rewall installed. Fraudsters are always de-veloping new ways to obtain your personal information online. For example, if malicious soft ware gets uploaded onto your device it can track what you do online, tap into your personal information and even create spam that comes under the identity of a friend. Always be cautious when downloading apps.
More information about fraud prevention is available online at http://www.td.com/privacyandsecurity/protect_yourself.jsp.

Earth Matters ECO Centre ClosedTh e Earth Matters ECO Centre, a social enterprise of
Nelson CARES Society, has offi cially closed its doors. Earth Matters will remain as an active program of Nelson CARES Society, and currently maintains two commun-ity gardens, a thriving recycling pick-up service and de-velops educational community projects.
“We came to a point where the ECO Centre was un-able to sustain itself without additional funding. We are
happy about the great work that happened at the ECO Centre, such as our retail training program and last year’s compost education project. We are very thankful for the support we received. Now, we look forward to developing more exciting educational programs and ensuring the success of our current programs, like our newly expanded recycling pick up service,” comments Alison Roy, Man-ager of Earth Matters.
Th is summer, Earth Matters plans to off er composting information and support to the community at the vari-ous Nelson markets. “We are still committed to providing information and assistance to the community on com-posting, waste reduction and local community garden-ing,” explains Roy.

First Youth Scholarship Awarded For May Writers’ RetreatTh e fi rst of fi ve youth scholarships available to regis-
trants aged 18 to 30 participating in the May 11 to 13 Convergence Writers’ Retreat in New Denver has been awarded to a Creston woman. Th e scholarship, awarded by the retreat’s organizing committee, covers the $236 registration fee, which includes meals throughout the event. Kristen Cook, a student at College of the Rock-ies, was also given one of the gift certifi cates from Jen-nie’s Book Garden that are awarded to the retreat’s fi rst 10 registrants.
Th e focus of the weekend, to take place at the Heart’s Rest Retreat Centre in New Denver, is writing on social justice. Th e event is limited to 25 participants, and of-fers three discussions on aspects of social change writ-ing, three writing workshops on a variety of themes, and a Sunday aft ernoon public reading and musical performance.
“We’re very pleased but not surprised by the interest in social justice writing,” said New Denver writer and jour-nalist Art Joyce, a member of the organizing committee.
“With the headlines full of threats pressing in on our democracy all over the Western world, it’s no wonder people are concerned about how best to articulate their views on the stresses and strains our society is experiencing.”
Registration, scholarship appli-cation, accommodation informa-tion and directions to Heart’s Rest are available at www.heartsrest.com/convergence/convergence-writers-retreat
Th e Convergence Writers’ Re-treat recently received a $1,000 award from Area H Regional District Director Walter Popoff ’s Community Development fund. Other support has come from the Columbia Basin Trust, and Heart’s Rest Retreat Centre.

Go GreenLaundry Tips
Washing machines use a lot of water and energy each month and laundry is one household chore that can’t be avoided. Here are four simple tips to save your family money while taking a more environmentally responsible ap-proach:
1. Wash your clothes in cold water. Th is will help prolong the life of your clothes by keeping the deli-cate fi bres intact while reducing col-our fading and shrinkage.
2. Use an ultra-concentrated single-dose laundry detergent like Arm & Hammer Crystal Burst Power Paks. Th ere is no added water and a single-dose can tackle a large load.
3. Wash full loads where pos-sible. Reducing the number of loads you do is more energy effi -cient and will save you money.
4. Give your dryer a break. With the warm weather upon us, save on energy costs by using a clothes-line or if it’s rainy, set-up a drying rack in the laundry room.
5. Upgrade to a high effi -ciency washer. Don’t forget to use a high-effi ciency deter-gent that is specially formulated to work in less water, making it better for the environment. www.newscanada.com

Tanning Beds RestrictionsTh e Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, applauds
the announcement made by the Honourable Health Min-ister, Michael de Jong, to restrict access to tanning beds for young people under the age of 18. Th e regulation is anticipated to take eff ect this fall.
“Th is is another step forward in cancer prevention,” said Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, CEO Bar-bara Kaminsky. “Th e decision to introduce this healthy public policy has the support of the majority of British Columbians, and will help protect young people from get-ting skin cancer later in life.”
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Can-ada and over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and indoor tanning equipment is the major cause of skin cancer. Th e good news is that skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers.
Youth are particularly vulnerable: the use of indoor tan-ning equipment before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 75 per cent. Melanoma skin cancer – the most serious form of skin cancer - is one of the most com-monly diagnosed cancers in youth between the ages of 15 and 29. Further, the incidence rates of melanoma skin cancer are increasing each year.
Parental consent does not work: the Canadian Cancer Society has been calling on the BC government to imple-ment province-wide legislation banning those under the age of 18 from using artifi cial tanning equipment because:
• Indoor tanning is especially harmful to young people;• Public education alone is not workingvoluntary guidelines are not working;• Parental consent does not work.Th e local mobilization of Tanning is Out ambassadors
across BC played a role in prompting the BC government to ban teens under 18 from using tanning beds. Many people took this issue to heart and into the schools.
Canadian Cancer Society Health Promotion Coordin-ators worked with local youth volunteers in 18 high schools in 2011 to develop and implement the Tanning is
Out campaign during the spring of 2011. Over 3,000 grade 12 students pledged to be tan-free for prom or graduation in 2011 and the Canadian Cancer Society is confi dent the number of students who pledge to be tan-free in 2012 will be much higher.
Th e Canadian Cancer Society fi ghts cancer by doing everything we can to prevent cancer, save lives and sup-port people living with cancer. Join the fi ght! Go to www.fi ghtback.ca to fi nd out how you can help. When you want to know more about cancer, visit www.cancer.ca or call our toll-free bilingual Cancer Information Service at 1-888-939-3333.
New Aff ordable HousingAs a result of federal and provincial investments, a
new program, the Aff ordable Rental Housing initiative (ARHi), will soon be available in the Columbia Basin re-gion for households in need. Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) has also partnered with the province in this initiative to deliver essential aff ordable rental housing.
Th rough the Canada-British Columbia Agreement for Investment in Aff ordable Housing 2011-2014, the Gov-ernment of Canada and the Province of British Columbia are providing a combined investment of $5 million over three years to support new aff ordable rental housing pro-jects in communities across the Columbia Basin. Th rough a separate funding agreement with the province, CBT is contributing a further $5 million to this initiative.
“Our government is committed to developing and im-plementing local solutions to local housing challenges,” said the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Offi cial Languages and Minister Responsible for British Columbia on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Develop-ment and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). “Th rough this new pro-gram, seniors and families of Columbia Basin will have access to aff ordable rental housing that meets their needs.”
“Th is is a wonderful announcement for our region,” said Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. “Columbia Basin Trust is such an important player in all of our communities and it is gratifying to see the province working so well and so collaboratively with CBT on such an important issue.”
Details on how to apply for the Aff ordable Rental Hous-ing initiative and request for proposals for the procure-ment of potential aff ordable rental housing projects will be available in spring 2012.
“Our partnership with the provincial government rep-resents a unique opportunity for CBT to help address a priority issue for a number of Basin communities,” said Garry Merkel, CBT board chair. “We’re excited this part-nership can help communities make aff ordable rental housing projects a reality.”
Th e Canada-British Columbia Agreement for Investment in Aff ordable Housing 2011-2014, signed in July 2011, con-fi rms the remaining three years of BC’s fi ve-year allocation of the Government of Canada’s 2008 commitment of more than $1.9 billion to improve and build new aff ordable hous-ing and help the homeless. Th is means a further $90 million in federal funding for British Columbians. With matching provincial contributions of $90 million, a total combined investment of $180 million helps to support aff ordable housing programs for BC residents.
Th e Government of Canada, through CMHC, will in-vest more than $2 billion in housing this year. Of this amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of almost 615,000 households living in existing social housing. In British Columbia, this represents some 71,000 house-holds. To fi nd out more about the Government of Canada and CMHC programs, call CMHC at 1-800-668-2642 or visit: www.cmhc.ca
