Unplasticised Polyvinylchloride (PVC-U) is one of the oldest and most widely usedplastics for piping systems worldwide. It is a versatile material that is used for bothpressure and drainage piping systems for above and below ground applications. It hasgood tensile, flexural and mechanical strength, low moisture absorption, goodflammability characteristics, and exceptional dimensional stability.
PVC-U has excellent chemical resistance across its operating temperature range of0°C to 60°C, with a broad band of operating pressures. PVC-U systems are very cost-effective and typically account for a large proportion of thermoplastic pipinginstallations.
PVC-U systems feature the widest range of pipe sizes, fitting configurations, valvechoices and ancillary items compared to all other thermoplastic piping materials.
PVC-U piping systems are joined by solvent cement welding, whilst transition jointscan be made using flanges, threaded connections, mechanical fittings, andcompression fittings.
PVC-U piping systems are available from IPS in both inch and metric dimensions, according to BS, ASTM and ISO standards. Systems are available in inch sizes up to24”, and metric sizes up to 630mm. Pipes, fittings and valves are available in grey, white and clear PVC-U.
General properties of PVC-U
PVC-U is thermally stable in the temperature range 0°C to60°C, however at low temperatures the impact strength ofPVC-U decreases. It is therefore not recommended for useat very low temperatures unless there is no likelihood of thepiping materials being disturbed or subjected to impactdamage. PVC-U is free from toxic metals thus ensuring thatit is physiologically harmless for drinking water andfoodstuffs applications.
Some important advantages of PVC-U are:
- Extensive choice of component parts- Wide range of applications- Good chemical and corrosion resistance- Safe for potable water applications- Low friction loss- Self extinguishing- High mechanical strength- Simplified installation techniques using solvent cement
welding- Approved for potable water applications

CharacteristicsChemical resistance
PVC-U has excellent chemical resistance to common industrialchemicals such as acids, bases and salt solutions. Resistance tosodium hypochlorite solutions is also very good. PVC-U is notresistant to aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, solvents, esters and ketones. The chemical resistance should be checkedwith our technical department for applications involving varnish, oils or fats, and PVC-U is not recommended for use withcompressed air or gases.
Chemical resistance of solvent cement weldedjoints
The chemical resistance of the joints in a solvent welded pipingsystem are the same as the material itself. However, PVC-U solventwelded joints in systems handling the following chemicals can bedegraded and require the use of Weld On 724 solvent cement toensure chemical compatibility:
Hydrochloric Acid 25%+ concentrationNitric Acid 20%+ concentrationSulphuric Acid 70%+ concentrationHydrofluoric Acid in any concentration
Weathering resistance
With the use of additives such as ultraviolet absorbers, PVC-Usystems display excellent weathering resistance to the long-termeffects of sunlight, wind and rain. Over time, grey PVC-U will losesome of its colour because of exposure to UV light, and it will haveslightly reduced impact strength. In extreme cases, the use ofinsulation or an application of a UV absorbent coating such asAGRU Coat, or the use of a water or latex based paint will help tominimise the effects of solar radiation. Solvent based paints shouldnot be used on PVC-U piping. For outdoor installations, or wherethe aesthetic appearance of the piping system is important, a fullymatched system of UV stabilised white PVC pipes and fittings isalso available.
Electrical characteristics
PVC-U is non-conductive, therefore systems will remain free fromelectrolytic corrosion. Precautions should be taken to avoid staticdischarge should any part of a PVC-U piping system pass throughan area where explosive gases may be present.
Physiological characteristics
PVC-U piping systems from IPS are free from lead, cadmium orother poisonous heavy metals. They are suitable for use in contactwith cold potable water, and are WRAS listed for this application.

about: pvc-uPressure ratings for pvc-u systemsMaximum continuous pressure ratingsPipes, fittings and valves are designed to operate continuously for 50 years at their maximum rated pressure at 20°C as follows, unless otherwise stated.
Inch sizes - ASTM StandardPVC-U piping systems manufactured in accordance with ASTM requirements use a ‘schedule’ system of pressure ratings. Pipes areproduced in three different ‘schedules’, 40, 80 & 120. Under this system the pressure rating of the pipe changes according to thepipe nominal bore size. Reference should be made to the pipe availability guide to verify the pressure ratings available for the sizesrequired.
Unlike pipe, there is presently no industry standard that specifies a working pressure for fittings. Moulded pipe fittings aremanufactured to meet the minimum burst pressure requirements to that of schedule 40 and schedule 80 pipe. In common with thepipe, the pressure rating of the fittings decreases as the nominal pipe sizes increases. The advisory pressure ratings for ASTM fittingsis as follows:-

Inch sizes - European StandardPVC-U pipes according to BS/EN 1452 (formerly BS 3505/6) and PVC-U fittings according to BS 4346 use the ‘class’ system ofpressure rating their components. Regardless of size, pipes and fittings are rated for use at a maximum working pressure accordingto the ‘class’. Care must be taken to ensure that the integrity of the system is not compromised through the incorrect match of pipesand fittings from different pressure ‘classes’. The pressure ratings of inch sized PVC-U pipes and fittings according to the Europeanstandard is as follows:-
Metric sizesThe pressure ratings for PVC-U pipes according to EN 1452 or DIN 8062 and PVC-U fittings according to DIN 8063 are defined bythe ‘nominal pressure’ method, whereby pipes, fittings and valves are grouped together according to a single nominal pressurerating. The PN rating is the maximum permitted operational pressure in bars calculated at 20°C, for example PN6 indicates amaximum working pressure of 6 bars. Reference should be made to the pipe availability guide to verify the pressure ratings availablefor the pipe sizes required. The pressure ratings of metric sized PVC-U fittings is as follows:-

Making a solvent welded joint - joint preparation
2
1 Bring the pipes, fittings and solvent cements to the same temperature condition.Ensure that the items to be joined are clean and dry prior to use. Inspect thecomponents for any signs of damage or irregularities. Do not use items that appearnot to be correct.
Cut the pipe ends squarely using tool suitable for plastic pipe. A wheel-type cutteris ideal. If a saw is used, a mitre box is recommended to ensure a square cut.Power saws may be used with care.
6
5 Check the dry fit by entering the pipe into the fitting. The pipe should enter thesocket of the fitting to between 1/3 to 3/4 of its depth. This is regarded as a good“interference fit”. If the pipe bottoms in the fitting with little interference, extrasolvent cement should be used during assembly.
Measure the insertion depth of the socket and mark it on the pipe end. This makes itpossible to verify later that the pipe has completely “bottomed out” in the fitting.
4
3 Using a chamfering tool cut a 10° to 15° chamfer on the outside of the pipe. Thiswill help ease the pipe into the fitting and minimise the risk of cement being wipedfrom the fitting during assembly.
Remove the internal burr from the pipe, and clean up any cutting debris or swarf.
Measuring the insertion depth
Marking the pipe end
Chamfering the pipe
7 Open cans of cleaner, primer and cement ready for use and loosely replace lids tominimise the evaporation of the solvents. Check that the products are in goodcondition and not “gelled”. Cements that are gelled must not be used. Never thincements.
8 If needed, remove dirt with C-65 cleaner applied using a clean, lint-free cloth orpaper towel.
10
9 Using a natural bristle brush or an applicator, apply P70 primer to the inside of thefitting socket then to the outside of the pipe, then apply a further coat to the fittingsocket. The primer should be worked into the surfaces of the material. Avoid'puddling' the primer in the fitting socket. Do not apply with a rag.
While the primer is still wet, apply the solvent cement using a natural bristlebrush of the correct diameter, or a correctly sized applicator. The solvent cementcoating on the pipe end should be liberally yet evenly applied to a distance equal tothe depth of the fitting socket. A medium even coat should be made on the fittingsocket surface. For diameters 4” (100mm) and above, or if the fit was loose, asecond coat should be applied to the pipe.
12
11 While both surfaces are still wet, insert the pipe into the fitting until the pipebottoms out fully in the socket. Check that alignment is correct. Hold the joint toprevent pull out for around 20 to 30 seconds (larger sizes may require more time). Abead of solvent cement should be evident around the pipe and fitting juncture. Ifthe bead is not continuous it may indicate that insufficient solvent cement wasapplied. If this is the case the joint must be cut out, discarded and begun againwith new product. Excess solvent cement should be removed from the mouth ofthe socket using a clean, dry cloth. Replace lids on cleaner, primer and cementcans to prevent the solvent from evaporating.
Handle the newly assembled joint with care until the initial set time has elapsed(see set and cure times table). Following the initial set period the assembly can behandled carefully, avoiding stresses on the joint. All solvent cemented joints mustbe allowed to cure fully prior to pressure testing.

solvent cement welding of pvc-uSet and cure times
The initial set between the pipe and the fitting takes place in a matter of minutes, and joints can therefore safely be handled in avery short time. However, the joint needs to cure before it can be used as part of a pressurised assembly. The time taken toachieve this can depend upon a number of factors, including the tightness of fit as well as the ambient temperature and humidity. In general terms, joints will cure faster on tighter fitting assemblies in warmer, drier conditions, whereas looser fit joints made incooler and/or humid conditions will cure slower.
As a general guide it is recommended that (wherever possible) joints be left for 24 hours to cure before pressure is applied. However, where this is not possible, consideration may be given to the above factors before determining when joints are put intoservice. Given average conditions and a working temperature not exceeding 20°C, a safe guide is to allow a cure time of not lessthan 1 hour for each bar of working pressure for pipe sizes up to 4” (100mm), and 11/2 hours for each bar of working pressure forlarger sizes.
Large diameter jointing
Solvent cement jointing on pipe sizes 6” (DN 150mm) and larger is a two-person operation. To ensure that primers and solventcements are applied at the correct speed they should be simultaneously applied to both pipe and fitting. Applying a thoroughcoating of cement is critical at these sizes both to ensure a good weld and to ease the pipe into the fitting.
For sizes 10” and larger it is recommended to use a ratchet driven pipe puller to ensure that the pipe fully penetrates the fitting. These tools may be hired if required.
One-step cements
Specially formulated PVC-U solvent cements are available to provide solutions tospecific applications or to solve installation difficulties. Examples includetransition cements to make joints between flexible and rigid PVC, and Wet ‘R Dry,a product designed to make solvent welded joints in wet conditions and/or wherequick pressurisation of the system is required.
One-step cements do not require the use of a primer in the welding process andgenerally work best on pipe sizes up to 3” (DN 65). In all cases, strictly follow theinstructions supplied with the product.
Chemical resistance of solvent welded joints
A well-made solvent cement welded joint will provide excellent chemical resistancecharacteristics, in the same way as that of the parent piping material. However solventwelded joints in systems handling the following chemicals can be degraded and requirethe use of Weld-On 724 solvent cement to ensure chemical compatibility:-
As a general guide, solvent welded joints between dissimilar materials are notrecommended. Where possible, a mechanical transition joint should be used, such as a union, flange or threaded connection.
If a solvent welded joint is unavoidable, it may (depending upon the conditions) be possible to make a reliable joint provided thata suitable solvent cement is used:

Pressure ratings for PVC-U pipework systems are always quoted at20˚C. As working temperature increases, the maximum workingpressure decreases by the factor indicated.
Pipework SupportPVC-U pipework requires more support than formetallic systems. As working temperature increases, the distance between supports is reduced. At 60˚, continuous support is required.
Please note that a transportation surcharge may be applied on pipe diameters 10” or larger - please enquire for details.
Covering a huge range of sizes - from 1/4" to 16" (up to 24" on special request), in a choice ofpressure ratings from 6 bars to 15 bars, IPS provide a multitude of fitting types to make even themost complicated installation easy.
Inch sized fittings are dimensionally matched for use with inch size pipes to BS3505/6, or ASTMD1785 and D2241 and are pressure rated for continuous use up to 15 bars in accordance with thetest requirements of BS4346 Part 1.
Spears PVC-U pipe fittings are suitable for use at the following working pressures:Standard Range: Size 1/2” - 11/2” 15 bars Industrial Range: Size 1/4” - 12” 15 bars*
For solvent cement joints in sizes 6” and above, we strongly recommend the use of primeras part of a three stage jointing process. This provides the additional lubrication necessaryto ensure the pipe reaches the bottom of the socket. Ratchet driven pipe pullers are alsohelpful for large size joints - see Tools section.

We recommend the use of PTFE tape or Blue 75Joint Compound for all threaded joints on plasticpiping. Please check with our technicaldepartment before using any other type of pipejoint compounds, as these can cause stresscracking and lead to failure of the system.
When using PTFE tape, follow the followingguidelines:
- Always wrap tape clockwise- Apply 2 to 3 wraps- Tighten hand-tight plus 11/2 to 2 turns- Do not overtighten
Spears Hot-Tap Saddles allow connection to anexisting pipeline under pressure. Simply boltthe saddle on to the existing pipe and connectthe branch piping. Netvitc® clamp systemNetvitc is a unique system that is quick and easy to install using boltedclamp couplings. Similarly, the clamp couplings can easily be demountedso that piping can be repositioned or reused.
The clamp is manufactured from a tough, lightweight reinforcedpolypropylene and will withstand harsh, corrosive environments. Thefittings are manufactured using either PVC-U or reinforced Polypropylene(for this range see PE section). Fittings are available with clampconnections so that the clamp can be bolted directly to the end without theneed for pipe. They are also manufactured with solvent sockets or BSPthreads to enable transition between the clamp system and pipe.
Butterfly valves, check valves and sight glasses are produced with clampconnections, allowing direct connection to clamp fittings.
The clamp system is pressure rated for use at a continuous workingpressure of 10 bar at 20ºC.
Please refer to the PVC-U valve section fordetails on the full range of clamp union valves.

flexfit® pvc-uFlex Fit is designed to enable secure leak-tight joints to be made in flexible PVC systems. Traditionally, jointing those systems was unreliable and often led to leaks.
The Flex Fit system uses special compression fittings which give secure connections to other flexiblepipes as well as rigid PVC-U or threaded joints, for example at pumps.
The pipe is manufactured in 50mm or 63mm sizes, and Flex Fit fittings are available to connect to bothinch or mm sized rigid PVC-U fittings as well as BSP threads.
● Swimming pools● Non-aggressive chemicals● Water transportation● Difficult ground conditions
Flexfit makes the installation of undergroundpiping easy by minimising the number ofconnections required. The maximum pressure at 20˚C is 3.8 bar.Maximum operating temperature is 60˚C.

Netvitc® clamp systemNetvitc is a unique system that is quick and easy to install using bolted clamp couplings. Similarly, the clamp couplingscan easily be demounted so that piping can be repositioned or reused.
The clamp is manufactured from a tough, lightweight reinforced polypropylene and will withstand harsh, corrosiveenvironments. The fittings are manufactured using either PVC-U or reinforced Polypropylene
(for this range see PE section). Fittings are available with clamp connections so thatthe clamp can be bolted directly to the end without the need for pipe (see 2, 3, 5and 6). They are also manufactured with solvent sockets or BSP threads to enabletransition between the clamp system and pipe.
Butterfly valves, check valves and sight glasses areproduced with clamp connections, allowing directconnection to clamp fittings.
The clamp system is pressure rated for use at acontinuous working pressure of 10 bar at 20ºC.

The function of a pressure reducing valve
Applications for Pressure Reducing Valves
A pressure reducing valve is installed in-line. It is responsible for maintaining thedownstream line pressure to the pressure set at the valve.
The valve works by responding to changes in the downstream pressure. Forexample, assume that there are normally two open valves downstream from thepressure regulator. When one is closed, the back pressure will increase. As thishappens, the pressure reducing valve would close down to maintain thedownstream pressure. When the valve is re-opened the pressure reducing valvewould also open up again until the set pressure was reached.
Under operating conditions the pressure reducing valve is always open whichmeans that it is balanced between the inlet pressure (primary side) and the loweroutlet/working pressure. At any rise of working pressure at the valve outlet apressure compensation via the control bore takes place at the area below thediaphragm. The higher working pressure activates the large diaphragm and liftsthe piston against the spring force. The flow reduces and the working pressuredrops until the balanced condition is reached again. When the working pressuredrops this procedure is reversed. The spring force opens the valve seat against the lower pressure force below thediaphragm. The flow rises until the balanced condition is reached again.
Pre-setting or re-adjustment of the valve set pressure is made by removing the protective cap and by setting the controlscrew. The counter nut is tightened after final adjustment. When used with neutral fluids, many of the pressure reducing orrelief valves can be fitted with a pressure gauge if required.

The function of a pressure relief valve
Applications for Pressure Relief Valves
A pressure relief valve is most often used to protect a system from over-pressurisation, but it can also be used to maintain a constant upstreampressure or even as a non-return valve in certain installations.
Not normally installed as an in-line valve, it only opens when the systempressure exceeds the pressure set against the diaphragm of the valve. When this happens, the excess pressure forces the valve piston off its seat, compressing the spring and allowing fluid to flow through the valve body todischarge. Damping at the valve piston suppresses vibration and fluttering.
The pre-formed diaphragm allows full opening of the valve whilst separatingthe fluid in the lower body from the bonnet and therefore the atmosphere. The seal is additionally secured by crimped seal O-rings at the diaphragm.
When the system pressure falls back to below the set pressure, the springforces the piston back into the seat, closing the valve.
Pre-setting or re-adjustment of the valve set pressure is made by removingthe protective cap and by setting the control screw. The counter nut istightened after final adjustment. When used with neutral fluids, many of the pressure relief valves can be fitted with apressure gauge if required.
