• Today we will be focusing on the PV sector in SA, with a particular emphasis on the PV GreenCard platform, howto use it and the support mechanisms that are in place for PV industry players and stakeholders.
• First, lets take a quick look at the opportunities in the PV sector. The growth of the sector has increasedsignificantly and the cost of fulfilling PV projects has decreased as the technology and supply and demand drivershave improved. Technology improvements, improved risk appetite and the global RE drive could result in SAseeing solar PV prices as low as R0.46/kWh by 2030. (This is according to the work published by Wright et al.2017).
• Domestically we have seen potential for local government procurement of electricity from IPPs; manufacturingopportunities from local content requirements; opportunities for manufacturers in the proposed AtlantisGreenTech Special economic zone and lastly, local businesses, organisations and government institutions who areprocuring PV systems to assist in powering their infrastructure.
• The PV industry is growing at a fast rate and over the next few years, businesses that invest in building theircapacity, identifying strong revenue generators within their scope of business and promoting their professionalbrand will be the big winners of the industry. Currently there are only a handful of PV industry businesses that canpotentially be considered to be brands however the industry is in its infancy in our country and the market has notyet objectively identified the “go to” brands for the PV sector and this is something that I would really like toimpress into the hearts and minds of all the PV industry stakeholders. There is room to grow into becoming asignificant player over the next few years, through investing in your business right now.

Welcome
• The industry might seem daunting because the focus tends to always come back to the REIPPPhowever the number of “small scale and independent projects” is increasing year on year. There isroom at the table for SMME and new players in the market. The laws of the country are slowlymoving in the right direction, which would enable small scale power production; additionally, theamount of support being made available to small businesses is continuously developing.
• SAPVIA is the custodian of the PV GreenCard program and they play that vital role which is aimed atproviding support to the PV Industry players of all sizes. The SAPVIA team are working tirelessly tobring opportunities, and support organisations within the industry; and this is one of the reasonsthat the PV industry is one of the most advanced with regards to the level of technical supportwhich has been made available to small and medium sized businesses and in how much thecommercial environment of the industry has grown under the leadership and drive of the industryorganisation.
• Our first speaker for today is Mr Niveshen Govender. Niveshen is the programme manager ofSAPVIA and will provide a brief introduction of the PV GreenCard platform and also touch on why itcan be a game changer for businesses who choose to invest in the sustainability of the industry as awhole. Our second speaker for today is Mr Philipp Vanicek also from GIZ. Philipp is also a RE advisorfor the programme, and will take us through how to fill out a PV GC online.
