Put the title Farming in the 18 th Century into your exercise book. As you saw in the section ‘ Continuity and Change ’, farming in the 18 th Century was little changed over the past three thousand years. Study the information on the webpage, then: Task One: 1. If you have not already done so, discuss as a whole class the illustrations of ploughing on the ‘Continuity and Change ’ webpage. They show that farming in the 18 th Century had changed little in its basics over the past three thousand years. Task Two: 1. Then, on the webpage ‘Farming in the 18 th Century ’: a. Work out what is happening in each picture of Source 1 – check that you understand the meaning of the words: ‘ploughing’, ‘harrowing’, ‘sowing broadcast’, ‘reaping’, ‘threshing’, and ‘winnowing’; b. The pictures in Source 1 show the progression of stages by which how bread was made, from ploughing to baking – explain to a partner how each stage prepared the way for, and led onto, the next picture. 2. Do the worksheet EF1: ‘Farming in 1750’. Task Three: 1. Using worksheet EF2, write a three-word summary of each of the eight problems of Open Field farming, one into each of the eight text boxes, then draw a line from the box to the part of the village where that problem might occur. © John D Clare, 2020
