WE HELP YOUGET THEREYour next big opportunity may lie 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) below the sea. That means higher pressures and possibly hot and sour well conditions – with longer tiebacks. How will you handle these challenges? What materials offer the right cost-benefit equation to ensure safe and reliable production for many years to come? Can you afford to risk anything at such depths?

As subsea fields move into deeper and harsher waters, our job is to amplify the possibilities for you. In fact, we welcome these challenges and work to be at your side, enabling your success. It’s how we have been supporting the oil and gas industry for more than 50 years – listening, developing and providing advanced corrosion resistant alloys and other high performance materials for tube, pipe, wire, welding products and powder-based hot isostatic pressed (HIP) products.

When we say, “We help you get there,” it captures our commitment to help you overcome the many obstacles you face when engineering subsea infrastructure. So whether you’re designing next-generation umbilicals, manifolds, valves, risers or more, let’s talk possibilities.

ADVANCED METALLURGY IMPROVES YOUR SAFETY Extreme offshore environments demand extreme safety. And while it might sound odd to claim that a deeper understanding of molybdenum or nickel can improve your safety, that’s exactly what we’re saying. In fact, the selection and use of the “right” corrosion resistant material for coiled tubing, OCTG tube, umbilicals and other products can be critical.

Like you, we regard safety as our guiding star. Wher-ever our products are handled, be it in Sandvik’s own mills, the fabricator’s manufacturing facility, or in the end user’s environment, accidents and environmen-tal hazards must be avoided at any cost. That’s why Sandvik applies safety measures in every step of the process. We also use a large amount of recycled material to make our production sustainable. Our “Zero Accidents” ambition applies to our staff, customers, suppliers, strategic partners and the environment.

RUST NEVER SLEEPS Although we cannot walk the decks of your oil rigs, platforms or intervention vessels every day, we’re acutely aware of the dangers in harsh conditions. We see your tough routines. We appreciate the fact that our corrosion-resistant tube, strip, slicklines and other products are helping you to work safely in all phases of the oilfield.

THINKING OF YOUR CREWS The mechanical and chemical properties of a particular grade of tube or wire can have a key impact on safety. Take the electrical or hydraulic lines that connect to valves, kill and choke lines, blowout preventers and riser joints. All it takes is a bit of corrosion or cracking to jeop-ardize the safety of your crew and the environment.

FOCUSING ON PREVENTIVE SAFETY When it comes to drilling and well completion, we understand that well temperatures, pressure and sour-ness can be critical issues. And as one deck hand told us: “One breath of H2S and you’re out.” Similarly, using premium quality well intervention and workover tools is also vital.

“OUR ‘ZERO ACCIDENTS’ AMBITION APPLIES NOT ONLY TO OUR OWN STAFF, BUT TO OUR CUSTOMERS, SUPPLIERS, STRATEGIC PARTNERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT AS WELL.” PETRA EINARSSONPRESIDENT, SANDVIK MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

“WHETHER IT’S AN UMBILICAL TUBE, COILED TUBE OR SLICKLINE, CHOOSING THE RIGHT MATERIAL CAN HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON SAFETY.” OLLE WIJK, HEAD OF SANDVIK R&D

300 MILLION FEET. ZERO FAILURES. AND THAT’S JUST FOR UMBILICALS.What will the subsea oilfield of the future look like? How are you engineering your X-mass trees, manifolds, umbilicals and flowlines to maximize production and reduce risk? The fact is that new corrosion resistant alloys and other innovations are opening new possibilities and causing many to rethink the standard choices.

By standard, we mean the common use of carbon steel, forging and cladding for wells, flowlines, riser tubing, valves, manifolds, wye-pieces and more. As field development moves into harsher environments, you need to question whether this approach is optimal. How thick can you realistically go with a riser tube or manifold wall before weight becomes an issue? Are you achieving appropriate levels of strength and corrosion resistance? And what about weldability?

SOLVING A PROBLEM IN UMBILICALSIt’s by challenging the status quo that Sandvik, togeth-er with its partners, pioneered the use of duplex stain-less tubing to replace subsea thermoplastic umbilical tubing. It was clear that duplex steel could provide roughly twice the strength of conventional alloys, while also improving resistance to localized corrosion, par-ticularly pitting, crevice corrosion and stress cracking.

HIGHER PRESSURE, HIGHER QUALITY Over the past 20 years, we’ve provided more than 300 million feet (100 million meters) of umbilical tubing – enough to circle the globe 2.5 times! In the process, our tube has been used in some of the longest (Snøvit, Norway), deepest (MC920, GofM) and highest-pressure (Conger, GofM) projects worldwide. To date, no service failures have been reported. In fact, our seamless super-duplex grade Sandvik SAF 2507TM has become the industry standard for subsea umbilicals.

HANDLING PRESSURE UP TO 20,000 PSITo cope with more severe conditions in tomorrow’s infrastructure, we are continuing to develop new corrosion-resistant alloys. One example is Sandvik

SAF 3207TM hyper-duplex alloy, which provides even greater yield strength, corrosion resistance and superi-or fatigue properties.

FROM POWDER-BASED TO SOLID HIP COMPONENTNow imagine taking a powder-based duplex alloy and molding it into any piece of subsea infrastructure you like – with no complicated machining or welding. That is the whole idea behind hot-isostatic pressing (HIP), which molds duplex steel powder material to “Near-Net Shape” (NNS) components, with excellent isotropic mechanical properties.

1. Perfect welds: High-quality welding consumables ensure tight joints that last for many years in corrosive environments.

2. Coiled umbilicals: Every reel of orbital welded coiled umbilical tubing is subjected to comprehensive non-destructive testing prior to delivery.

3. Sandvik SAF 2507TM: A super-duplex umbilical tube that is strong, cor-rosion resistant and enables a thinner walled tube that can withstand very high pressures.

4. Powdered possibilities: Gas atomized metal powders in corrosion resistant alloys can be pressed into virtually any shape for your subsea infrastructure.

5. Duplex infrastructure: With powdered duplex, we can use hot isostatic pressing (HIP) to create strong, corrosion resistant Near-Net Shape products that require a minimum of machining, welding and offer unform strength in all directions.

”THREE HUNDRED MILLION FEET OF SUBSEA UMBILICAL TUBING IS ENOUGH TO WRAP AROUND THE WORLD 2.5 TIMES.”NIGEL HAWORTH, SANDVIK
