Many citizens in the county and in our City have earned the Purple Heart Medal for being wounded in combat. Some have been killed in action all over the world and the latest was CW2 Balli of Salinas who was killed in action in Afghanistan. The signage is to honor those that have given their all as well as those that have been wounded in combat fighting for the rights of all Americans. It sends a clear message to those that live in our communities and that their sacrifice was not in vain. It lets the veterans within our community know that our City honors and respect what was done for the freedom we so enjoy in our daily lives. Each City that is declared as a Purple Heart City will receive two signs that meets the State and Local government requirements. Any additional signs may be ordered at our cost and we also have a half size version of the sign which can be placed within the City Hall at an additional cost. City staff will work on placement of signs. There are many Veteran organizations within the County limits from Salinas to Kings City which include: VFW, American Legion, Military Order of the Purple Hear, DAV and others. This recognition will and can only have a positive effect at the way veterans and non- veterans i.e., spouses, relatives, look at how their community respects Veterans.
