GAME 36 // PURDUE vS. virGiNia // MARCH 30, 2019 // KFC YUM! CENTER // NCAA TOURNAMENT ELITE EIGHTHEAD COACH MATT PAINTER} Record at Purdue: 321-158 (.670) / 14th year | Career Record: 346-163 (.680) / 15th year• With five Sweet 16 appearances, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, three Big Ten regular-season championships, a Big Ten Tournament title and an
international gold medal on his résumé, 14th-year head coach Matt Painter is widely regarded as one of the brightest young minds in all of college basketball.
• Painter was named the 2019 Big Ten Coach of the Year and has led Purdue to three straight Sweet 16 appearances. Painter was one of seven semifinalists for the Naismith National Coach of the Year.
• Painter affirmed his long-term commitment to Purdue in October of 2018, agreeing to a two-year extension that will keep him in West Lafayette through at least the 2023-24 season. The deal features five, one-year extensions that go into effect through the 2028-29 season. Following the 2029 season, Painter will still only be 58 years old.
• Painter entered the 2018-19 season third on the school’s all-time wins list (295) behind legendary mentors, Gene Keady and Ward “Piggy” Lam-bert, both of whom have been inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
• Has averaged almost 23 wins a season in his 14 years at Purdue. If you don’t include the first transitional year (9-19 record), the average balloons to 23.9 wins per year over the last 13 seasons.
• Has won at least 25 games in eight of his 14 seasons as a collegiate head coach.• Painter’s four Big Ten Coach of the Year honors are the third most in league history (Gene Keady - 7; Bobby Knight - 5; Bo Ryan - 4). • Painter has averaged 11.3 wins per year in conference play, the fifth-best average in Big Ten Conference history.• Is one of just three active coaches to have won a Big Ten championship. • Painter’s 11 NCAA Tournaments in the last 13 years are the eighth most in the country.• Purdue’s five Sweet 16 appearances in the last 11 years are the ninth most nationally.• Painter’s 345 wins are the second most nationally for a coach nationally in under 15 years of coaching.• Coach Painter’s 12 NCAA Tournaments are the most for a coach nationally under the age of 55 (as of April 1, 2019 -- Painter is 48 years old).• Has produced draft picks in each of the last three years, one of only six programs nationally that can say that. • Purdue is one of five teams to have a Naismith position award finalist in each of the last four
