Where is Uppinakudru? (Its location) Uppinakudru is almost a small island about a kilometer away from Tallur, towards left on the west, a junction on the National Highway and about 5 kms far from Kundapura Town in Udupi District of Karnataka State, India.
What is the Tradition of Puppetry? This Uppinakudru is the parental village of puppetry. It is a well known fact that this rare folk art has about 350 years of its existance and is now running in its 6th generation, making an unbeaten Guinnes Record of course.

If we go through and observe the interesting revival achievement of the Uppinakudru Yakshagana Puppetry, we find how this rare folk art had the support from the younger and elder personalities. Even today, we resume that there are a number of artists, supporters and admirers of puppetry who have tried to keep this folk art alive. We are proud of these personalities who are to be remembered respectfully because they have done their best in making this folk art popular and alive still today.
What are the Awards and Honours conferred? Uppinakudru Puppetry has been awarded with National Award twice(1966 & 1980), State Award twice(1993 & 2010), prestigious Tulsi Samman Award(1995) of Madhya Pradesh, Virudu Award of Chennai (2006), Kala Chethana Award of Gadag (2008) etc. and many other State, National and International Awards too.
What is the background of Puppetry Trust? Uppinakudru Sri Devanna Padmanabha Kamath Memorial Yakshagana Gombeyata Trust ® was established in 1995 to save and develop the tradition of this rare folk art of coastal Karnataka. This Trust, since its inception till today has made great achievements through out by taking its tradition to the high spirit of educational, cultural and social values. Why is Uppinakudru Puppet Akademy established? Uppinakudru Sri Devanna Padmanabha Kamath Memorial Yakshagana Gombeyata Trust ® has been in existance since 1995 struggling hard for keeping the tradition of this rare folk art alive by doing its best. We are pleased to express that this art has succeeded in reaching different countries of the world. This Academy’s main objective is to give justice to this folk art when it has been totally neglected by the society.
Who are the backbones of this Akademy? We are pleased to make a mention of two dignified personalities in this task without whose whole hearted support nothing could have been achieved. Mrs. Dr. Sudhamurthy, Chairperson, Infosys Foundation, Bengaluru and Dr. P. Dayananda Pai of well known Century Builders, Bengaluru have come forward voluntarily by contributing financial help beyond our expectation. Because of their liberal financial help and guidance the huge Akademy Building has come up today in this small rural area.
What are the achievements made by the Trust? Uppinakudru Sri Devanna Padmanabha Kamath Memorial Yakshagana Gombeyata Trust ® has made a record of series of achievements since its establishment in 1995. Puppetry programmes are being conducted in Karnataka and other parts of our country and even abroad. Training in puppetry is being given to the interested persons. Programmes are conducted in Kannada, Konkani and Hindi languages as per the request from the sponsors attracting hundreds of viewers all over. Following are some of the events put on our records.
1) 1994 - Took part in Karnataka Utsava conducted by Karnataka Sangha, Mumbai.
2) 1994 - Gave programme and demonstration at the National Puppetry Festival held in Udupi sponsored by Folk Art Study Centre, Udupi.
3) 1995 - Gave programme and demonstration in National Puppetry Festival held in Assam.
4) 1995 - Uppinakudru Sri Devanna Padmanabha Kamath Memorial Yakshagana Gombeyata Trust® was established.
5) 1997- Participated in Spic-Macay programmes arranged in Andhra Pradesh and Punjab states ( Jullandar, Amrithsar, Ludhiana,Bhatiala, Chandigarh and New Delhi)
6) 1998 - First programme in Konkani language was arranged in the Konkani Art Festival sponsored by Konkani Akademy.

41) One of the special attractions of this folk art programme is giving live demonstration before the audience.
42) The Trust has given provision of Insurance Facility to its artists on the basis of their service and experience.
43) Photoes and data collection of all activities are documented by the Trust.
44) It is a credit to this Trust that it has succeeded in recommending monthly pension to two of its Troupe from the state Govt.
What are the publications of the Trust?
This Trust has given due importance to training and collecting informations besides documentation.It has a long tradition of about 350 years and is running in its 6th generation now.
The first of its kind is the English version of “KOGGA KAMATH MARIONETTS”(1995). The other publications are “Uppinakudru Sootrada Gombegala Seemollanghana”- (The flight beyond fronteers) , A Travel collection (1996). “Gombe Prapancha” – A souvenir (1998), “Uppinakudru String Puppets”- a colourful pamphlets (2000), “Sootra Parva”(2004)-A biography of Kogga Kamath, “Sootra Abhiyana”(2009)- Report of One programme for one District, “String Tradition” (2009)- a Colourful brochure.
Do you know about the Foreign Tours?
Uppinakudru Gombeyata Troupe has visited almost all states of India giving programmes and demonstrations successfully. Besides, it has the credit of paying visits to a number of countries all over the world right from 1978 making successful tours, spreading this rare folk art of our country world wide.

25) 2005 - May- Successful programmes and demonstrations sponsored by Spic-Macay on the occasion of its 20th year celebrations - Dr. U. Ananthamurthy, well known scholar honoured the troupe.

27) 2005 - December- The “Decennary Celebration “ was held successfully.
28) 2006 - April - This trust is fortunate to have a full pledged bus ‘AIRAVATHA’ for the use of the Troupe, donated by Infosys Foundation, Bengaluru by its Chair Person, Dr. Sudhamurthy. Besides this she has helped our troupe members by giving incentives and financial help on her own.
29) 2007 - Demonstration in several schools and colleges of Andhara Pradesh sponsored by Spic-macay.
30) 2008 - Infosys Foundation sponsored programme of ‘ One programme for each District in Karnataka’ one month successful tour.
31) 2010 - Kannada Sangha of New Delhi sponsored programme and demonstrations.
32) 2010 - KARNATAKA STATE AWARD conferred on Bhaskar Kogga Kamath, the President of the Trust.
33) 2013 - Demonstration programmes sponsored by Madras Craft Foundation.
34) 2014 - Programmes arranged in Bagalkota, Hebbsur sponsored by Infosys Foundation, Bengaluru.
35) 2014 - ‘The Hindu’ sponsored programmes in Bengaluru at the Puppet Festival- programmes in Infosys, Indira Gandhi Art Centre and Bannerghatta Ashrams.
36) 2015 - Six days programmes in Alva’s Foundation, Moodbidri – two programmes a day about 15,000 students attended.
37) This Trust has been honouring Senior/Junior artists of Puppetry from time to time.
38) A Uniform code of dress during programmes is followed among the artists.
39) Interested persons are being trained in this folk art.
40) The Trust has given encouragement to Kannada, Hindi and Konkani languages by using them in their programmes. Thus it has reached all corners of people who are interested in this folk art.

What are the activities conducted in Puppet Akademy?
About 25 students, boys and girls are given training in puppetry art in the Akademy Building. Every month one or the other cultural programme is being conducted in the Building since its inauguration in March 2015.
What is the financial security?
The Trust has succeeded in conducting programmes, its activities from the encouragement of dignified sponsors and donors and has shown that ‘what is not possible has been made possible’ inspite of shortage of funds. But we feel that financial support will help the Trust for its survival. For this we have a proposal of raising Corpus Fund of Rs. One Crore and we are sure that we can conduct all our programmes by meeting expenses from the interest of this fund.

Our intension is not limited to the collection of fund only but to bring all admireres of Puppetry under one banner and help this rare folk art to continue its existance in future too. We request the general public to support this art by attending programmes as audience or becoming sponsors for our different programmes. You may become as the honourable life members or the founder members too.

What are the Future plans of Puppet Akademy?
Organizational activities are given importance to make this folk art popular and attractive. Well organised suitable training is given to the interested students. Every attempt is made to reach out all walks of life by conducting programmes and demonstrations not only in Kannada but in Konkani, Hindi and English languages also. Some of the future plans are:-
1) Opening of a well collected Museum of Puppetry in the Akademy Building.
2) Creating folk art awareness in children by visiting and conducting programmes and live demonstrations in schools and colleges.
3) Using puppetry for more publicity.
4) Scope for Provident Fund facility to the artists and creating a Building Fund.
5) For the smooth running of the Akademy and giving job security to the artists finding sponsors, supporters for honouring them.
6) Arranging Puppetry Camps.
7) Helping the artists to get financial and other facilities from different organizations from time to time.
8) To edit a magazine “Gombe Prapancha” to share the experiences of the mass.
9) On the event of 20 years of the Trust visiting 20 villages and towns/ schools, colleges giving programmes and demonstrations.
10) Giving awards and prizes to the deserving artists.
