Pupil Work Stage 3• Map out what your 2 dimensional, image editing

idea will be, and then consider what photos you must take and what other reference pictures you must gather in order to achieve this.

• Take your photographs during the holiday, in line with the decisions that you made in class. If this is not possible, continue to gather images relevant to your class work ideas and draw these in detail.

Why not create an image of yourself holding something magical. This could even be one of your friends, as a tiny fairy in your hands?

Images needed:

Separate photos of you and your friend.

Some sort of magical background

A butterfly

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Cut out one wing first and ‘mirror’ this.

look for a way to ‘transform’ or ‘rescale’ your fairy, to fit.

Lens flare filters

Why not imagine yourself as a warrior with a sword or other hand held weapon? Images needed:

A photo of you holding a very short cardboard tube or stick, so that your fist makes the right shape

A sword

A fantasy background

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Position the sword over your hand, and use the rubout tool to remove the portion of it that you are supposed to be grasping.

Make sure that you are working on the correct layer.

Having studied the ‘Video Tutorials’ that come with this presentation, consider some of these ideas: Remember, the 2D sky is the limit! Click anywhere to begin.

Imagine yourself as a superhero. You could be using your super strength to lift something impossible, like a whole car.

Images needed:

A photo of you, hands upwards, above your head.

A car, truck or bus,

A fairly plain background.

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Shrink yourself rather than the other object.

You may be able to find a suitable filter that suggests supernatural energy.

If you have some sort of morphing software, you could combine your face with that of another creature, like a werewolf.

If you do not have any morphing software, you can still mix your features using clone or healing tools.

Images needed:

A simple, ‘face on’ picture of you and that of another creature

A background that fits the idea, e.g. a full moon for a werewolf

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Use the clone or healing tool to add the other animal’s texture.

You may wish to increase the contrast or add some of the background colour into you.

Why not put yourself into your favourite perfume advert, or even make up your own?

Images needed:

A photo of you posing confidently, with glamorous clothes and makeup.

Either an existing perfume bottle, or items to make up you own, like a raindrop or diamond.

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

You may wish to add text that names your perfume.

Suitable shapes, colours and other things that help set a particular mood or atmosphere.

Would you prefer to be a ghost, haunting your own home, an old building or your own grave?

Images needed:

A photo of you, perhaps holding chains, preferably dressed in old fashioned clothing.

Photos of a grave or scene.

Perhaps a friend, pretending to be terrified.

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Make yourself ‘see through’ by reducing the strength of the layer that contains your image.

Lightly spray grey or white to make mist.

You may wish to turn yourself into a biomechanical creature, like a cyborg. Images needed:

Focus on your face and keep your photo simple.

Additional mechanical or electronic related images.

A lightening or energy-type background

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Draw feathered selections around your eyes and change their colour.

Add a circuit board texture into your skin using a clone or healing tool.

Add the other items into your image.

You could appear as a god or goddess in the clouds, controlling a scene below you. Images needed:

A photo of you looking powerful.

A scene you could be controlling, like a battle.

Dramatic clouds, or perhaps an underwater scene.

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Remember how you changed your eye colour and reduced your layer’s strength.

What sort of god/ goddess are you?

Have you ever wished you were a famous model or singer?

Images needed:

You, posing with suitable clothing and props like a guitar or microphone (if you do not have one of these, add one later).

A background that fits the purpose.

Newspaper headlines

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

You could use lens flares to act as bright lights or camera flashes.

You could add other, software lighting, but increase the contrast later if you do.

You could generate your own cover for your favourite book or story, or a fairytale from your early years.

Images needed:

Don’t try to illustrate the whole story, just hint at what it is about. Symbols and objects may be as important as people.

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

A border could work well.

Add the title of the story or book and the name of the author.

Choose your text carefully.

Imagine what it would be like to be a sporting hero, either celebrating a victory or in the middle of the event itself. Perhaps catching the biggest fish ever!

Images needed:

A photo of you in suitable kit or clothing.

An item like a world cup, or enormous fish.

A background that adds magnitude to your image, like a ecstatic crowd.

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Think BIG and add anything you can to make your image believable. Made up newspaper headlines could help, as could adding friends.

A composition that shows your life, interests, family and friends. This could be an image that reflects how close you are to your family pet.

You may alternatively wish to just focus upon your pet or friend and his/ her personality.

Images needed:

As many images as you can collect, that contain a lot of variety, but be selective.

Photos that show closeness or really reflect the personality of the subject.

Favourite objects.

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

You could montage the different elements together in a creative way.

Shape tools and other fun items could help, like ‘Love Heart’ sweets that carry a message.

Why not just create a really wacky, off the wall scene or montage of images? This could together present some sort of message that the viewer must work out, or alternatively, is completely mad!

Images needed:

The 2D sky is really the limit here, but don’t forget, you will have to talk about what you have made at some point in the project.

Hints, filters or techniques that could help:

Be very experimental, but remember to save previous stages. Develop an eye for what ‘looks good’.

As you take your photographs, think about body shapes, positive and negative spaces, and close up as well as further back shots with your camera. Also, consider what poses would work best with your ideas, and what you are pretending to be doing.
