Tanning beds' toll: At least 170,000 cancers a year U s e r s b e f o r e a g e 2 5
c a r r y t h e h i g h e s t r i s k
At least 170^)00 cases of skin cancer each year are linked to indoor tanning, according l o an analysis published online Tuesday in the British medtcatJoumalSAfV
Those cancers inchide basal-cell carcinomas and squamous-cell carcinomas, two common types of non-melanoma skin cancers that
aren't usually life-threatening, the studysays, Peoplewho have ever used indoortanningare29"i. more likely to develop basal-cell carcinomas than those who have never used them.
Indoor tanners are 67% more likely to develop the more serious squamous-cell carcinomascompared with those who have never tanned indoors, says the study's senior author Eleni Linos, an assistant professor of dermalology at the University of California-San Francisco.
That suggests indoor tanning is responsible for about 5% of non-melanoma skin cancers, the most commonly diagnosed
USA saysThomasGlynnoflhe American Cancer Society. Non-melanoma skin cancers strike about one in five Americans during their lifetime. Including 30% of whites, Linos sstys Those who started tanning indoors before age 25 had the highest skin eance r risk, according to the analysis, which included 12 studies involving 80.000 people in six countries.
Other research has linked indoor tanning lo malignant melanoma, the deadliest type ol skin cancer, Linos says. The International Agency tor Research on Cancer has classified ul traviolet radiation from tanning beds asaClasst carcinogen, the same cate
gory as tobacco SI Linos says the study lends support l o state and city efforts to ban kids and teensfromtanningsalons.
JohnOverslreet of the Indoor Tanning Association says consumers should be free to make informed choices about the benefits and risksof indoor tanning. "UV exposure, whetherfrom thesunorasunbed.has many benefits." He cites research suggesting ultra\-iolet radiation f r o m tanntngbedsprovides v i tamin D
Scientists are studying the role of vitamin D i n preventing heaHh problems, but the studies use vitamin D supple ments, not UV expo su re.

Alarmingly, NBC's 'Chicago F i re ' lacks real heat and heart f 5D
David Elgenberg, left , and .I«8se Spencer are i n an el i te i q u a d .
I t can't have been easy to turn a subject this hot into a show that struggles t o reach lukewarm,
Sl i i l , NBC managed. The f i m step was to let L o w A O d e r ' s Dick Wolf solder Chicago Fire to gether out of the scraps of a hundred squad-
house, multiple-crises dramas, w i t h bits from every medical series thrown i n for good measure. The second was to treat the two male stare like eye candy, to the extent you're left wondering whether the show is about
ftrefigbters or firefighter calendars. And the th i rd is to hope viewere
have forgotten that a show as dangerously, darkly funny and searingly insightful us Rescue Me ever existed Because Chicago Fire is to Rescue Me what the Osmonds were to the Jackson Five.
Carefully remove every shred of originality or excitement, and you're left with that kind of well-funded mediocrity that marks so many broadcast series. Everything looire shiny and new; everything moves along w i t h a sort of chilly efficiency. People die, buildings bum, hearts are touchedandthehour hums along. IfE TV made for people who hate to be surprised
Set in a firehouse populated by firefighters, paramedics and the members of an elite 'rescue squad* Fire stars Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinneyas Casey and Severide, former best friends temporarily split by the hour's opening tragedy, though even theuse of the word'tragedy'gives the show and the stare' male-model performances more weight than they deserve.
For equal-opportunity sex appeal thesbowalso stare LaurenGerman as Leslie, a lesbian paramedic who shares Severide's apartment —where the lease, apparently, forbids herfrom beingfully clothed
The squadmates bond and bicker while going out on emergency calls
designed to put people at risk in strange ways: afatherandson trapped In a car teeteringon a precipice; a guy impaled on a fence; a man who may need an on-site amputation to escape a constructionaccident.
It's the kind of thing Grey's Anirfo-my has been doingfor years, and w i t h a far better balance of drama and humor.
You can'tput people in those kinds of life-and-death situations and not generate some emotional connection, and there are t imeswhen the shoWs b btant manipul ation wo rks. But eve n when it does, the moments seem to vanish as you watch, like smoke passing byyour eyes.
Andjust about as enticing.
