In mid-May, I had the good fortune to participate in a program sponsored by the US Navy called “Educators to Sea.” Along with 13 others, I traveled to North Island Navy Air Base in San Diego. Our group consisted of teachers and administrators from K-12, community college and university systems from all over the country.
After an extensive orientation, we were flown out to the CVS Carl Vinson, a Nimitz class aircraft carrier that was operating about 100 miles off the coast of California. We spent the next day and a half touring the ship, observing flight operations, and interacting with the crew. Over 5,000 sailors live and work on the Carl Vinson and our group was given access to all areas except the nuclear reactors that power the vessel. The role that each individual plays is critical to the overall operation of the ship and its ability to successfully complete its mission.
The purpose of the “Educators to Sea” program is to showcase the skills and professionalism displayed by members of the modern Navy. That goal was certainly achieved in our case. Everyone in our group was impressed with the enthusiasm and professionalism of everyone that we came in contact with. These men and women, from the youngest, just out of school to the enlisted personnel and officers who have made a career of the Navy are all highly trained and see themselves as being an integral part of something very important to our country.
Gone are the days when enlisting in the Navy meant spending your time swabbing decks or chipping paint. Individuals now have a much greater opportunity to choose their career paths and shape their futures.
For me, this trip was a real “eye-opener” and the experiences that I had during my brief stay aboard the Carl Vinson will never be forgotten.
