Says Govt Has Crossed All Limits Of Oppression ABID BASHIR Srinagar, Mar 7: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani Thursday said curfews and restrictions won’t daunt the resolve of people in their fight against ‘repression.’ He said New Delhi and J&K Government have crossed all limits of ‘cru- elty in the valley by resorting to killings, frequents arrests, use of pepper gas and ransack- ing of residential houses.’ Geelani stated this soon after land- ing at Srinagar Air- port from New Delhi at 2:15 PM. He man- aged to address a few dozen people, most of them Kashmiri passengers, min- utes before he was detained by police. “The battle we are fighting is between truth and injustice. History is testimony to the fact that truth has always prevailed. I am sure victory will be ours,” the aged leader said. He said by imposing cur- fews and restrictions, the authorities won’t succeed to deter the resolve of people. “We will continue to strive for our right,” Geelani said. “You (people) don’t need to worry. We have faced them (atroci- ties) time and again and we will continue to do so,” the vet- eran separatist leader said. Geelani’s younger son Naseem Geelani, who was accompanying his father, said: “Geelani sahib was yet to conclude his speech at the airport; all of a sudden a police contingent led by Station House Officer of Humhama police station told us that he will drive Gee- lani’s sahib’s Ambassador car himself. The SHO drove it straight to our Hyderpora residence and put my father under house arrest.” Naseem said police did not allow even him to enter the house initially. “After I told them it is my house and Gee- lani sahib is my father, only then was I allowed to enter,” he said. Scores of people had gathered outside the Srinagar Airport to receive Geelani, however the police did not allow them to assemble and dispersed everybody. Talking to Greater Kash- mir over phone from his residence, the Hurriyat (G) chairman said Kashmir is witnessing the fallout out of the secret hanging of Muham- mad Afzal Guru. “After that, a youth from Pulwawa was murdered at Hyderabad. Another youth was killed in cold blood at Baramulla,” Geelani said. He said New Delhi has crossed all limits of “oppression and cruelty.” “Every- body is aware of the treatment meted out to me in New Delhi. I was put under house arrest for 19 days. Such were the restric- tions on me that policemen stayed inside my room for 32 hours,” he said. Geelani had left for New Delhi in December follow- ing cold wave conditions in Kashmir. He returned after more than three months. The Hurriyat (G) chair- man said he has come know about the “atrocities commit- ted by the police on the direc- tions of top officials.” Coalition wins 4 seats, PDP 1 Naeem, Parray, Showkat, Majid Elected On Valley Seats ABHINAV VERMA Jammu, Mar 7: National Conference–Congress coalition bagged four while opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched one seat out of the five Legislative Council (LC) seats that went to polls today. Out of four seats from Kashmir, three were bagged by ruling coalition candidates - Showkat Hussain Ganai (NC), securing 17 votes, Abdul Majid Bhat (NC) 16 votes and Advocate Muzaffar Parray (Congress) 17 votes. One of the Kashmir seat in LC was bagged by the oppo- sition PDP Naeem Akhtar Andrabi who got 19 votes. Similarly, the reserved seat of Doda was also swept by the candidate of ruling coali- tion Naresh Gupta (Congress) with the margin of 26 votes. He got 50 votes against his lone contender Muhammad Iqbal of National Panther Party (NPP). Muhammad Iqbal man- aged to get 24 votes. For the first time in 62 years, LC polls were held through open ballot in Jammu and Kashmir. For Kashmir seats 87.64 percent voting was recorded as out of 89 members, 78 cast their votes. Similarly 83.15 percent voting was record- ed for Doda reserved seat as 74 members cast their votes. Interestingly, PDP patron, Mufti Muhammad Syed made his first appearance in the state assembly during its cur- rent session to cast his vote. The Court of Inquiry, headed by a Brigadier, was constituted to probe the circumstances in which Tahir Rasool Sofi was killed on March five, official sources said. Lt Gen K T Parnaik, GoC-in-C northern com- mand, while expressing deep sorrow and regret over the loss of precious life in Baramulla, had ordered a time-bound inquiry into the incident. Akhtar was a ‘rebel’ in government Six former bureaucrats in Upper House MUDDASIR ALI Srinagar, Mar 7: With the entry of Naeem Akhtar in the Legislative Council, at least six former bureaucrats have managed to secure berths in the Upper House over the past few years. Three former Chief Sec- retaries of J&K, BR Kundal, Vijay Bakaya and Sheikh Ghulam Rasool are among already the members of the Upper House. While Kundal, considered to be very close to former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad repre- sents Congress in the Upper House, Bakaya and Sheikh Ghulam Rasool represent National Conference. The Upper House has a total strength of 36 members out of which only two seats Srinagar, Mar 7: Naeem Akhtar, as he is commonly known in social and media circles, was an unusu- al bureaucrat and a “rebel”, seen most of the times on the other side of the fence during his 37 year long service career. Naeem joined the govern- ment as an Information Offi- cer at the age of 20 and took premature retirement as Sec- retary Tourism in 2009 with three years of service still in his kitty. Naeem also declined to get induct- ed into the IAS in 2007 which could have afforded to him two more years of service. With the eruption of militancy, Naeem was dismissed from service in 1990 alongwith several other officers for rising against the human rights violations by the security forces in the state. Curfew remained clamped in several areas as the valley witnessed another spontane- ous shutdown against the kill- ing of a Baramulla youth. Though no separatist group had called for shut- down on Thursday, the people across the valley observed strike in protest against the killing and alleged excesses by forces. Shops, banks and other business establish- ments across the valley were closed and traffic was largely off the roads. CENTRAL KASHMIR: In Srinagar, curfew remained in the jurisdictions of police stations Rainawari, Maharajgunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Zadibal, Kralkhud and Maisuma. Clashes erupted in Batamaloo, Tengpora and Zakoora areas of Srinagar. The forces foiled the attempts of protests at four places in old Srinagar. Reported said that groups of youth, raising pro-freedom slogans took to streets in Batamaloo and Tengpora areas. They were intercepted by large contingents of police and CRPF. Reports said that forces burst tear smoke shells and cane-charged the protes- tors. The latter in turn pelted stones on the forces triggering clashes in which at least six persons were injured. Reports said that later addi- tional reinforcement arrived in the area to contain the situa- tion. The pitched battles con- tinued for at least two hours. In Zakoora area of Srina- gar, reports said that hundreds of youth took to streets and held strong protests demonstration against the killing of Baram- ulla youth. However they were intercepted by forces leading to violent clashes. Pitched battles continued till evening. Clashes were also reported from Habbak Crossing. PIC: AMAN FAROOQ/GK GOVT TO CLAMP CURFEW TODAY SHABIR IBN YUSUF Srinagar, Mar 7: In view of the prevailing situation in Kashmir the government has decided to clamp curfew in Srinagar and other parts of the valley on Friday, while the admit cards for examinations would be treated as curfew passes. Deputy Commissioner Sri- nagar, Baseer Ahmad Khan told Greater Kashmir that no movement of public or vehicles would be allowed in district Srinagar on Friday. “In view of law and order situation and to avoid breach of peace and tranquility and damage to life and property, and in exercise of the powers vested to District Magistrate under Section 144 CrPC restrictions have been imposed on the movement of public and transport in entire district Srinagar from mid- night of March 7, till further orders,” he said and added that Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar has been directed to implement this order in letter and spirit. A top police officer told Greater Kashmir that with the apprehensions of protests, curfew will remain imposed in all major towns of the valley. “We will take all measures to ensure peace,” he said. Speaking to Greater Kash- mir, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hussain Samoon said in view of curfew, the roll number slips of the can- didates appearing in different examination would be treated as curfew passes. “I have direct- ed all the Deputy Commission- ers that no student should face any problem in reaching to his respective examination No hartal today: MMM Srinagar, Mar 7: Muttahida Majlis-e-Mushawrat (MMM) on Thursday said there would be no strike on Friday. Reiterating its pro- gramme for Friday, MMM in a statement today said there would be no strike on March 8. “However, the Imams (prayer leaders) and Khateebs (preachers) will at Friday prayers apprise the people about the demands of ongoing freedom movement and seek their support for the same. After offering Friday prayers people will stage protest dem- onstrations,” it said. Meanwhile, MMM has strongly condemned, what it said, the reign of terror and suppression let loose by the government and admin- istration in the length and breadth of Kashmir valley. “Such repressive measures by the government had nei- ther dampened the courage and spirit of people in the past nor will do it in future. The government tried these repressive tactics in 2008, 2009 and 2010 but it could never dampen the freedom sentiment. On the one hand, the state rulers are in the forefront of perpetrating all atrocities on people and one the other, they are shedding crocodile tears in assembly,” the spokesman said. Reports of minor clashes were also received from Sadra- bal, Hazratbal. Reports said that agitated youth outside the University gate pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel. Eyewitnesses said that after a policeman was hit by a stone, CRPF personnel went berserk and forced their entry into Mirzabagh campus of Kashmir University comprised of resi- dential quarters reserved for the employees of University. “CRPF personnel smashed the doors and windows of resi- dential quarters and arrested a scholar and son of a University employee,” an employee of Uni- versity said adding that they even didn’t spare the children. “CRPF personnel entered the premises despite the fact that University has its own force,” a University official said. The scholar, Basharat Ahmed (PhD Environmental Science) and the other youth were lodged in Police Station Nigeen. Later top University officials reached the police sta- tion to sort out the matter. No hartal today: MMMSrinagar, Mar 7: Muttahida Majlis-e-Mushawrat (MMM) on Thursday said there would be no strike on Friday.

Reiterating its pro-gramme for Friday, MMM in a statement today said there would be no strike on March 8. “However, the Imams (prayer leaders) and Khateebs (preachers) will at Friday prayers apprise the people about the demands of ongoing freedom movement and seek their support for the same. After offering Friday prayers people will stage protest dem-onstrations,” it said.

Meanwhile, MMM has strongly condemned, what it said, the reign of terror and suppression let loose by the government and admin-istration in the length and breadth of Kashmir valley. “Such repressive measures by the government had nei-ther dampened the courage and spirit of people in the past nor will do it in future. The government tried these repressive tactics in 2008, 2009 and 2010 but it could never dampen the freedom sentiment. On the one hand, the state rulers are in the forefront of perpetrating all atrocities on people and one the other, they are shedding crocodile tears in assembly,” the spokesman said.
