SCAMS
• The COMPUTER SCAM is old but resurfac-
ing. It is usually initiated by a phone call from
a person alleging to be from Microsoft stating a
virus on your computer has been discovered. He/
she offers to help you with the problem if you
will allow them access to the computer by provid-
ing your email and password. If you allow them
access, you will then have a serious problem as
they will charge you hundreds of dollars to return
control of the computer to you and even then it
will be infected with various malware and spy-
ware and the sensitive information in it will have
been taken.
• The CREDIT CARD SCAM is also one that has
been around for some time but continues. It origi-
nates with a call from Heather, Rachel, etc. from
Credit Card Services. Their offer is to consolidate
your credit card bills and save you a lot of money.
The problem starts when you provide them your
credit card numbers. If you fall for this scam, you
will never regain control of those cards and will
incur significant debt.
Both of these scams originate in India and normally
the person you are speaking with has a heavy accent
and can barely communicate in English. Never pro-
vide sensitive information to people on a call you did
not originate.
Safety & Security • HOME AUCTION SCAM – Of particular
concern was an isolated incident that occurred
this last month in Greenwood. A young man
approached a Greenwood resident and presented
the resident with a document. The document stat-
ed that the resident’s home was to be sold at pub-
lic auction the following Tuesday but the “nice”
man was willing to purchase the home and save
the home from auction. The resident promptly
shut the door and called the club manager. This
was immediately turned over to our Constables
and the Houston BBB. The home was fully paid
for and current with all taxes and assessments and
was not scheduled for auction. This was the first
known instance of this type scam in Texas.
Please be aware of the aforementioned scams
and don’t fall victim. Also be alert to suspicious
neighborhood activity and call our Constables at
(281) 378-9472 to report.
