The Alzheimer’s Association has been moving the cause forward for 27 years. We’ve been the leader in Alzheimer care and support since those origins and have

played a significant leadership role in fostering research in understanding the disease, its potential treatments and cure. In 2007, we moved the cause by building public awareness and knowledge, encouraging a national voice for those with the disease and focusing our mission on reaching more people who need our support and accelerating progress to end the disease.

Indeed, we believe that the ultimate path of Alzheimer’s is that of a controllable disease. Better diagnostic tools to detect the disease at earlier stages — even before symptoms appear — and disease-modifying drugs are closer than ever before. Our staff worked closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to improve the drug approval process by including input from those living with dementia and their care partners. Also during the year, we advanced a pilot program to encourage greater participation in clinical research studies.

While much work remains to slow or stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, the advancement of science increasingly gives us hope. Our organization has been part of nearly every major advance in Alzheimer research since our formation in 1982, and we have committed millions of dollars in grants to promising research projects. To foster the field of study, we host science conferences that are the primary knowledge-sharing forums for thousands of the world’s leading Alzheimer researchers.

As significant as our organization’s achievements have been, we must still do more — as soon as possible. We are driven by the reality facing the more than 5 million people estimated to have Alzheimer’s today and the millions more who will face the disease tomorrow. Our progress energizes our staff, volunteers, donors and sponsors to move ever faster to achieve our vision: a world without Alzheimer’s.

Raising Funds to Enhance Care, Raise Awareness and Support Research

Loyal donors, community partners, volunteers, and staff are responsible for the Chapter’s success in advancing the Alzheimer’s Association vision: a world without Alzheimer’s disease. Every person and every gift makes a difference in the efforts to stop this devastating disease. We pause to celebrate our success. Together in fiscal year 2007, we:

d Raised awareness and $554,653 through our Memory Walk in ten Kentucky and Southern Indiana communities to support local programs and Alzheimer’s research.

d Received Grant Funding totaling $132,040 to support local programs and services for persons with dementia, their caregivers and families.

d Raised awareness and $49,587 through Making Memories dinner and wine tasting events to support local programs and Alzheimer’s research.

d Promoted the Association’s mission and programs with assistance from funeral homes through the Chapter’s Memorial and Honorarium Programs raising $104,686 to support local services and Alzheimer’s research.

d Collaborated with Community Health Charities to promote awareness about Alzheimer’s and secure employees’ support totalling $30,922 through Workplace Campaigns.

d Communicated with attorneys, financial planners and donors about Planned Giving opportunities that benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

d Joined with Alzheimer’s Association chapters throughout the country to appeal to members of Congress to increase federal funding for research through our Advocacy and Public Policy Program. The federal allocation for Alzheimer’s research totaled $643 million.
