Local swimmer Savaniya Williams will be South Africas fi rst
Indian female diver in the South African Navy when she completes
her div-ers training in Simons Town next year.
Williams, who was invited by the SA Navy to attend the
pre-div-ers selection in Durban in 2010, said she believes it is
her calling to be a part of the navy.
Williams has always been a water baby as both her parents are
swimming instructors and hold classes at the Olympic Swimming Pool
in Northdale. They put her in the water at the age of two. As the
years went by she began com-petitive swimming and then social long
distances such as the Kapi-tal K and Midmar Mile. I also had my
brothers to keep up with, she added.
Williams, one of 47 trainees to make it through, said that
everyday experiences are both physically and mentally challenging.
Here, they
are said to break and make their subject, she said.
Williams, also a keen Indian classical dancer, said swimming and
dancing always vied with each other in her life. As luck would have
it, just before the call from the navy, she was cast in Ronnie
Gov-enders latest show, Too Muckin Futch. But she isnt giving up on
dancing completely. I still plan on dancing my weekends away, she
said.
The closest most people come to their dreams is watching them on
a 64 cm television screen. I have been given the opportunity not
only to live my dream but my late broth-ers as well, which is the
biggest honour for me, she said.

Being a buyer at Toyotas Head Office musthave been fun a few
years ago. Whowouldnt enjoy getting an e-mail saying,Heres a couple
of zillion dollars - nip out andbuy us a chunk of Subaru,
please.?
Anyway, Toyotas 16,7 percent share in the otherJapanese
manufacturer bore fruit with the launch ofthe jointly developed
Toyota GT 86 earlier this year. The gorgeous looking Toyota version,
sans the GTappellation in South Africa, fell into my sweatypalms
earlier this month, and not a moment toosoon.
After driving the 86 pronounced eight-six - for
a week Im convinced that the collaboration hasproduced an
instant classic in the mould of theToyota 2000 GT of 50 years
ago.
Unusually for anything Toyotas had a hand in, afair amount of
practicality has been sacrificed in thequest to create a real
drivers car. The back seat is ajoke, the boot is taken up largely
by the spare wheel, the ride is firm and the steering is precise to
the pointof being twitchy. And, of course, theres rear
wheeldrive.
But enough of the background stuff. Whats it liketo drive?
Well, the engineers got it right. Theyve produceda small, light
car with adequate but not enormous
power that handles beautifully and demands to bebullied along a
winding road while averaging lessthan 10l/100km fuel
consumption.
Ive always maintained that its a lot moreenjoyable driving a
slow car or bike fast than itis to drive a fast one slowly. The
Toyota isnt by anymeans slow its 147kW naturally-aspirated
enginehauls it up to 100km/h in 7,6 seconds, and top speedis
claimed to be 226km/h for the manual version but its not blindingly
quick either, so you can driveit hard without attracting too much
attention, and themore aggressively you drive it, the better it
feels.
The car weighs just 1,250kg, with a very low
centre of gravity and this, along with the firmsuspension and
responsive steering gives it the feelof a real thoroughbred in the
classic mould.
I had the six-speed auto version and would havepreferred the
manual, but I still enjoyed the 86 morethan anything else Ive
driven in yonks.
Think of it as a poor mans Nissan 370Z. Itcertainly qualifies
for that comparison on pricebecause the Toyota will set you back
just R298,500for the base model and R346,500 for the better-specced
but mechanically identical High versionwith an auto gearbox. Theres
also a six-speedmanual 86 High at R329,400.

This is a real drivers car with a firm ride and precise to the

Fiat Fiorino
Practically cuteBy Gavin Foster
The little Fiorino panel van that Fiat offered tome for
evaluation recently didn't initially ap-pear to have much going for
it in terms of fun.Being a workhorse, it lacks street cred, and
the1.4-litre petrol engine in the entry-level modeloffers an
uninspiring 54kW at 5,200rpm and118Nm at 2,600.
That's what I thought, anyway, until I drove thelittle van. It's
surprisingly lively and entertaining tozip around the city in,
thanks to its nimbleness andcompact dimensions, while being
extremely prac-tical as a workhorse.
By the time I gave the test vehicle back I waspicturing it in a
vibrant colour with a lowering kit,a set of alloy rims, an aircon,
perhaps a per-formance exhaust, and a race-team sticker kit toshow
that I still haven't really grown up.
The interior of the Fiat impressed with itsquality. The trim
fitted neatly and felt classier thanthat off many passenger cars.
The spec level isn'ttoo bad either. You get driver and
passengerairbags, ABS brakes, cup-holders, a passenger seatthat
folds away level with the floor when you needthe space for cargo,
lots of stowage bins and cupholders, and a 12-voltaccessory
socket.
The options list islong and includes air-con, parking
sensors, load area partitions, andvarious sound systemswith or
without steeringwheel controls andBluetooth functionali-t y.
Interestingly, thereare all sorts of possi-bilities for doors
andwindows; the load areahas various templatesbuilt in for easy
fitting. The test vehicle had noside doors at all and nowindows in
the backones, so the factorysaved on the cost ofincluding an
interiorm i r r o r.
Pricing of the FiatFiorino is pretty goodfor what you're
getting.The petrol-engined vanretails for R129,900,and if you're a
VAT ven-dor you can claim al-most R16.000 back.The 1.3-litre
Multijetdiesel model seems aneven better buy with55kW at 4,000rpm
andmuch healthier torqueof 190Nm at 1,500rpm.Included in the
diesel'sextra R20,000 price tagis a sliding door on theleft side of
the load
area.I think the little Fiat van should appeal to many
buyers because it can deliver the goods, literallyand
figuratively, in much the same way that thepopular 3/4 ton pickups
do for many South Africanfa m i l i e s .
There's 2.5 cubic metres of stowage space, and itcan easily
handle items that wouldn't fit into a 3/4ton bakkie with a canopy.
It comes with a three-year 100,000km warranty and an optional
serviceplan is available.
The Fiorino is suprisingly lively and entertaining to zip around
in.Pic by Gavin Foster.

GWM unveils new H6 in Durban
New Model
The GWM H6 unveiled at the Durban MotorShow. Pic by James
Siddall.
GWM had an impactful pres-ence at the recent DurbanMotor Show in
November, introducing its brand new H6 SUVto the public for the
first time.
Hailed South Africas most suc-cessful regional motor exhibition,
thefirst Durban Motor Show took place 20years ago. KZN residents
are devel-oping a growing appetite for motorentertainment, as the
relocation of theTop Gear show from Johannesburg toDurban
testifies.
As such, the Durban Motor Show
provides an effective and popular plat-form for motor
manufactures to show-case their latest vehicle ranges andinteract
with the public each year andGWM is no exception.
GWM Gateway, the latest deal-ership to join GWMs network of
78,welcomed visitors to the visually strik-ing red and white GWM
exhibitionstand. Apart from well-knownfavourites like the Steed 5
pick-uprange, H5 SUV and the newlylaunched C10 compact hatch,
showvisitors feasted their eyes on the newH6 SUV.
This newcomer was Chinas best-selling SUV in September 2012. If
theSouth African publics response isanything to go by, the H6
promises tobe a worthy addition to the GWMvehicle range.
Design-wise, the H6 boasts refinedlines and sportier contours,
making it ahighly attractive alternative for bothmale and female
SUV connoisseurs.Comfort and safety features abound, and visitors
were delighted by its superspacious boot and luxurious interior. The
GWM H6 will be available atGWM dealerships early in 2013.
Tony Pinfold, Chairman of GWMSouth Africa, says: Every
oppor-tunity to interact with existing andpotential GWM customers
gives usgreat insight into our market. Needlessto say, we find
events like the DurbanMotor Show highly valuable brandbuilding
exercises.
Seeing the publics increasinglypositive response to our
affordablequality proposition, and new vehicleslike the H6 in
particular, makes us evenmore determined to exceed their ex-p e c t
a t i o n s .
In 2013, GWM will celebrate itssixth year in South Africa and
isplanning more new vehicle launches tomark the occasion.

important festival this week. Karthigai Deepam is the
lighting of lamps on the Krit-tika or Kartika Nakshataram day in
Tamil Nadu and Ker-ala in Karthigai month. There are several
reasons or stories behind observing Karthigai Dee-pam. A popular
belief is that the day is the birthday of Lord Muruga. The lamps
are also lit for a happy married life and for the well being of
