Welcome for upper voices and piano

Welcome, originally written for boys’ voices, organ, brass, and percussion, was specially commissioned for a concert marking the Royal Opening of the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, on 4 December 1996, in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen. The work was premiered by The Manchester Boys’ Choir, with Wayne Marshall (organ), and an instrumental ensemble from the Royal Northern College of Music, conducted by Adrian Jessett. Some years later the composer made a new version especially for the Kinder Children’s Choir of the High Peak (Joyce Ellis), who gave the first performance at a concert in the Buxton Opera House in 2006. It is that version for upper voices and piano that is published here. Composer’s Note: The text of Welcome is simple, consisting of the word ‘Welcome’ repeated many times in a variety of languages, from the initial English, through various European languages, to Hebrew and Arabic (with echoes of La Marseillaise and God Save The Queen appearing in the musical fabric) – thus it was my intention to provide a fitting way of welcoming a new and diverse audience into a new concert hall designed for a new Millennium. Performance Note: The voices are divided into as many as six parts in certain places, but I have mainly left it to the conductor to decide on how to distribute these parts, depending on the size and make-up of the choir. Nevertheless, the work is suitable for performance by any mixture of upper voices, from children’s choirs to female voices.

Whispered and Revealed is a setting of Snow-Flakes, by H.W. Longfellow. While the music oftentimes reflects the delicacy of winter weather, both text and music hint at an anxiety, a swelling, and a repetitive keening that can accompany — and announce — the same precipitation. Whispered and Revealed was commissioned by Essential Voices USA and is dedicated to their conductor, Judy Clurman, and was written in the final days of 2014.
