Keon Park Boxing Club president Darren Burrows said he was ‘‘shat- tered’’ at the prospect of the Johnson St gym, which opened in 2005, shutting down. But VicTrack – which has re- quested Darebin Council rezone the land housing the gym for poten- tial retails and commercial uses – has played it down. Mr Burrows, a retired pro- fessional fighter, said his gym was keeping 30 to 40 kids off the streets every night. ‘‘I hunted high and low to get a place to rent to help the kids in the community,’’ he said. Club secretary Chris Bence said the not-for-profit gym was set up to help young people, including indi- genous youth, get off the streets and get fit and healthy. He said the gym was rented for $250 a month from the Scouts, which does not use the building. The gym charges just $2 for fit- ness classes, including training for women and overweight teens. Following a request by VicTrack, Darebin Council voted last month to rezone the 652sq m site to mixed use. The council report said the rezon- ing, now on public exhibition, would ‘‘provide opportunities for a mix of land use activities, includ- ing retail/commercial uses’’ and ‘‘will ensure the Keon Park site will be generally suitable for fu- ture redevelopment proposals’’. But VicTrack spokesman Jason Murray said it ‘‘supported the ongoing recreational use of the land leased to the Scouts as a gym’’. ‘‘There is no intention to sell the land,’’ he said. Asked why the land was being rezoned, Mr Murray said VicTrack was ‘‘tidying up an area not needed for future transport’’. Darebin Council acting general manager of city development Michael Ballock said: ‘‘Those who use the building and any other interested person will have an op- portunity to make a submission.’’ On the cheap Thrifty trackside fashion, p8 | Smart Shopper Just the right ticket, p27 MARKET BLUES PRESTON TRADERS IN LIMBO p3 GOOD SPORTS SCHOOL SHOES BEAT SPIKES p7
