THE ARBITER APARTMENTS HOUSING FOR THE MIDDLE PROJECT BY JACK WATSON PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 481 WINTER 2016 PRESSURED TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN MODERN INNOVATION IN COMPACT LIVING AND THE TRADITIONAL SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCE, ARCHITECTURE MUST ADDRESS A SOCIAL DILEMMA BETWEEN THE OLD WAYS AND THE NEW. LOCATED BETWEEN NORTH WILLIAMS AND NE MASON, THIS HALF BLOCK SITE MUST ENSURE A SMOOTH AND GRADUAL TRANSITION FROM THE FIVE STORY MULTI-FAMILY APARTMENT BUILDING, AND THE REST OF THE OPPOSING NEIGHBORHOOD. USING A TIERED ELEVATION, A NEW TYPOLOGY IS INVESTIGATED, AD- ALIGNING THE UNITS ALONG A CENTRAL UTILITY SHAFT ALLOWS NOT ONLY MAXIMIZED EFFICIENCY IN MATERIAL USAGE BUT ALSO A RIGID STRUCTURE FOR THE BUILDING TO REST UPON. EACH UNIT’S ROOF IS POPULATED WITH SKYLIGHTS WINDOWS, EXTENSIVE GREENROOFS, AND SOLAR WATER HEATING PANELS TILTED TOWARD THE SOUTH. 24 UNITS ON SITE 2069 SQFT 3300 SQFT 2349 SQFT COMMUNITY ACTIVITY SPACES RESIDENT PARKING TYPICAL PASADENA COTTAGE COURT UNIT PLAN PRECIDENTS EXTENSIVE GREEN ROOF & POTENTIAL HORTICULTURAL THERAPUTIC USES ISRAELI PUBLIC HOUSING DEVELOPMENT BY CHYUTIN ARCHITECTS (1980) DRESSING BOTH THE MONOLITHIC QUALITIES OF THE APARTMENTS TO THE QUAINT AND SUBTLE ELEVATIONS OF THE HOUSES ACROSS THE STREET. EACH UNIT COMPRISES A PRIVATE GARDEN AND PATIO SPACE, UNINTERRUPTED VIEWS OF THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBOR- HOOD, AND SPACIOUS SOCIAL GATHERING SPACES.
