Film Facestock Characteristics

Flex. Modulus . . . . . . . . The measure of a film’s conformability

Tensile Strength . . . . . . . The force required to break a film

Elongation . . . . . . . . . . . How much a film will stretch before it breaks

Dimensional Stability . . The ability of a film to resist growth or shrinkage when exposed to various environments

Chemical Resistance . . . The ability of a film to withstand exposure to various solvents

Surface Energy . . . . . . . The characteristic of a film which indicates how easily an ink or coating will adhere and wet-out

Opacity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The measure of the amount of light that cannot pass through a film

Stiffness . . . . . . . . . . . . . Measurement of a film’s rigidity

Tear Strength . . . . . . . . . The measurement of a film’s toughness or resistance to tearing or splitting

Film Surface Treatments

> Corona Treatment Altering the surface characteristics by exposing the surface to a high voltage

discharge (corona) resulting in an increase in surface energy (dyne level).

» Usually requires 38-42 Dynes to print and achieve good ink anchorage

» Will dissipate with age and timing varies with film

» Do not over treat as this will cause the print to washout or result in poor ink anchorage

issues

> Topcoating A chemical coating applied to the surface to improve ink and toner anchorage.

» Various types available for different uses

» The right one is needed to meet application needs and insure that the product

converts well

> Print Treatment A proprietary chemical coating applied by the manufacturer during the film

making process.

» Unique to polyesters

Film versus Paper

Paper

• Wider variety of facesheet options

• Easier to manufacture a custom

product

• Less expensive

• More friendly to various printing

technologies

• May wrinkle

• No water resistance

• Decrease durability (solution is to

add an overlaminate

Film • Offers water and moisture

resistance

• Offers durability to UV, heat,

chemical, abrasion, and autoclave

exposures

• Long lasting

• Offers tear resistant or tamper

evident properties

• Flexible/Conformable - good for

squeeze applications

• Can be used as a resealable closure

system for flexible packages

• Offers “no label look” on clear

containers

• Typically more expensive
