1 Title and summary of proposed project Multi-Campus Environmental Research and Media Collaboration This project develops a multi-campus student-designed web-based interactive environmental research portal The goal of the project will be fostering meaningful collaboration among the faculty and students housed at RIT RIT-ACMT and RITAUK Planning will continue over the summer of 2012 Implementation of the web portal is planned for the fall and winter terms 2012-13 with a final interactive portal available in the spring of 2013 The coordination for the project will be housed at RITAUK and managed by Daniel Cosentino and Michael Waschak Over the summer we will design the course module for the environmental classes and plan out interaction benchmarks to encourage collaboration among the environmental and media students at the three campuses With faculty partners at RIT-ACMT and the RIT main campus we will co-implement a common assignment within the curriculum of the environmental courses at three of RITrsquos campuses during the 2012-13 school year beginning in the fall term The environmental course assignment will focus on creating a document repository annotated bibliography and selected literature reviews on local environmental issues from sources written in all regional languages The literature reviews and annotated bibliographies will be done in English thus some translation work will be required of the students The environmental course module assignment will be designed to work in tandem with AUKrsquos web design and data base development courses The Media and IT students at AUK will coordinate and design the visual display of the data assembled in the environmental courses in collaboration with their fellow students at all three campuses The collaboration will foster greater knowledge of regional environmental issues among the students and faculty involved The final portal will provide a useful resource for researchers on environmental issues The interaction among providers of content (environmental students) and the web-based presenters of the content (AUK Media and IT students) will provide a template for future cross-disciplinary collaborations among RITrsquos global campuses 2 Targeted learners or population (include cluster departments year level number of

learners impacted) The project will directly impact approximately 75-100 students at each campus (approximately 250 total targeted student learners) plus the faculty members involved They will come from a variety of academic unitsdepartments engaged in teaching environmental courses at the three campuses and from AUKrsquos Media Science and Technology Unit including both the IT and Media and Graphic Communication concentrations Indirectly this project also targets the faculty student body and researchers at RITrsquos many programs as it will demonstrate that cross-campus global interactions can be done effectively

WaschakCosentino middot PLIG Multi-Campus Environmental Research and Media Collaboration page 2 of 6

Further this project will provide researchers and others a ready storehouse of data on environmental conditions in three very different global regions 3 Is this for a current course or new course This proposal is for current courses Over the summer we will be creating curriculum modules to be added to the following courses Environmental Policy 050848450-51 Effective Web Design I and II and Intro Dbase amp Data Model 308839811 - Effective Web Design II 308839811 - Effective Web Design I 400236050 - Intro Dbase amp Data Model 4 Anticipated impact on teaching andor learning The content developed and presented will be a resource for comparing local environmental issues across the three regions (eg European continental-Balkans Adriatic coastal USA Great Lakes and upstate New York) Additionally this project will demonstrate the potential for collaborative teaching and learning among RIT and the global campuses in Croatia and Kosovo It will provide a template for future global collaborations The Media and IT students will be learning how to work with policy and governance clients to coordinate the creation of static and interactive websites by synthesizing the information being developed and researched in the Environmental Policy courses from multiple campuses Results will be monitored via the Internet by participating faculty and the collaboration team As a corollary policy students will be considering the presentation of research data visually to target greater audiences through graphic communication with its potential for global and local impacts including transparency in governance and increasing public awareness of environmental concerns 5 How will your project impact student success (ie retention) This Multi-Campus Environmental Research and Media Collaboration proposal will facilitate and encourage the exchange of ideas among the students at three campuses It will also allow students from multiple disciplines across campuses to envision new and innovative uses of critical thinking and practical skills learned in the classroom by increasing interest in emerging fields such as New Media IT and the continually adapting fields of governance and public policy 6 Describe how you will measure the impact how you will report your findings and what

you will share about your project in a faculty forum The primary means of evaluation for the project will be in assessing the development of concrete usable web-based content tracked with analytics Successfully developing the working product will be the metric by which the project will be judged The cross-classroom collaboration and curriculum development will include benchmarks for designing developing and employing the project content that can be viewed and monitored throughout the academic year Student grades will be assigned by the instructorrsquos of the individual courses at the various campuses for group and individual work It is anticipated that the project will result in at least one peer reviewed journal article on fostering international collaboration in education and that the final project will be presented at the 2013 RIT Innovation and Creativity Festival

7 Present a rationale for your project as it ties to the intent of the grant including a why it is not part of regular college business

Our project encourages collaboration among three of RITrsquos campuses and two departments This will be the first time such an extensive collaboration has been attempted The interaction developed through this project expands the definition of college business at RIT to include the global programs

b its relevance to required cluster college andor department competencies Our project is designed to meet the current learning outcomes of existing courses and expand the potential outreach and impact of the respective departments Just getting the discussion about this project started has resulted in discussions of several additional collaborative efforts among RIT Rochester and RIT global faculty

c describe how your project is relevant to other faculty and what you think it would take to transfer your success to other faculty

The proposed project is a multiple campus collaboration involving faculty and students across several of RITrsquos campuses and programs As such it will be a demonstration project and a field test of this kind of collaboration In this case none of the faculty partners or students will be working face-to-face in the same location Therefore we will be using social media RITrsquos Confluence Wiki web conferencing and email to keep in contact and to deal will any problems that occur along the way The exercise in global communication should serve as a model for similar work in the future

d relevant credentials experience of involved facultystaff Professor Cosentino received his MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technologyrsquos CIAS Imaging Arts program and also began teaching at AUK in 2010 Cosentino has worked extensively with policy makers and architects at the Rochester Regional Community Design Center prior to beginning his time at AUK providing him a unique experience in working collaboratively with professionals in public policy and governance During his tenure there Cosentino received two grant awards for lsquoDesign Excellencersquo from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Dr Waschak holds a PhD in environmental public policy from the Georgia Institute of Technology and began teaching at AUK in 2010 Prior to this he taught at RITrsquos Rochester campus for two years He has already implemented a version of the proposed course module at RIT-AUK with demonstrated results The following have agreed to serve as our faculty partners Dr Staša Puškarić at RIT-ACMT and Dr Jim Myers at RITrsquos Rochester campus We also expect at least one additional faculty partner from RITrsquos STS PubP program once the decision is made about who will be teaching which environmental courses next year

The proposed project is a multiple campus collaboration involving faculty and students across several of RITrsquos campuses and programs As such it will be a demonstration project and a field test of this kind of collaboration In this case none of the faculty partners or students will be working face-to-face in the same location Therefore we will be using social media RITrsquos Confluence Wiki web conferencing and email to keep in contact and to deal will any problems that occur along the way The exercise in global communication should serve as a model for similar work in the future

d relevant credentials experience of involved facultystaff Professor Cosentino received his MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technologyrsquos CIAS Imaging Arts program and also began teaching at AUK in 2010 Cosentino has worked extensively with policy makers and architects at the Rochester Regional Community Design Center prior to beginning his time at AUK providing him a unique experience in working collaboratively with professionals in public policy and governance During his tenure there Cosentino received two grant awards for lsquoDesign Excellencersquo from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Dr Waschak holds a PhD in environmental public policy from the Georgia Institute of Technology and began teaching at AUK in 2010 Prior to this he taught at RITrsquos Rochester campus for two years He has already implemented a version of the proposed course module at RIT-AUK with demonstrated results The following have agreed to serve as our faculty partners Dr Staša Puškarić at RIT-ACMT and Dr Jim Myers at RITrsquos Rochester campus We also expect at least one additional faculty partner from RITrsquos STS PubP program once the decision is made about who will be teaching which environmental courses next year

e describe how this project is innovative within your discipline or program The primary innovation developed within this project will be in the use of proven technologies to foster collaboration among RIT and the RITrsquos global campuses (eg RIT confluence wikirsquos social media and development of visual displays for web-based scientific content designed for human interaction and research) Further by bridging the disciplines environmental policy students acting as clients will develop new skills for translating their research needs to web designers who understand the technical potential and limits of the visual display of information and created knowledge Students and Faculty engaged will be considering the possible uses of presenting research data visually to target greater audiences through graphic communication The project will provide a model for collaboration with potential local and global impacts including transparency in governance and improved public awareness of environmental concerns

8 Provide a timetable of the development of the project This project proposal is based on an ongoing collaboration and pre-beta test between Daniel Cosentino MFA and Michael Waschak PhD that was initiated and tested in the classroom on a smaller scale beginning in the fall of 2011 Thus far Dr Waschak has implemented the project at RIT-AUK in Kosovo with some success Currently we have an annotated bibliography of documents written in four languages relating to environmental issues in Kosovo that covers nearly everything written and published in the past twenty years Students did the majority of the work and all of the translation The results of this initial collaboration can be viewed currently on the RIT confluence WIKI at (eg Kosovo Environmental Policy Annotated Bibliography httpswikiritedux7BgBAw [05084845020111Home] with visuals at Multi-Campus Environmental Research and Media Collaboration - CosentinoWaschak - Pre-Beta httppeopleritedudxcgshplig2012html) It is expected that we will develop a final version of the curriculum module for the environmental courses and plan out the work of the Media and IT students over the summer of 2012 During the Fall and Winter terms of the 2012-13 the curriculum will be implemented data will be collected and the environmental and media students will co-develop several possible versions of the web portal The best design will be chosen and the final web portal will be developed and presented in the Spring of 2013 9 Outline details of budgetary expenses as necessary to further explain how monies are to be allocated The budget includes summer salary for the two principle faculty members We will use the summer to review the results of our trial run at AUK and to develop the course modules and web template for use during the school year We have included money for two student assistants who will provide support for the project over the school year 2012-13 The students will be responsible for the assembly of data and helping to coordinate the collaboration
