    Welcome to ProVision VThis describes how to prepare for, install, license, setup, and administer ProVision V.

    ProVision V is a network management tool developed by Stratex Networks that supplies management solutions to the Stratex Networks SNMP and proprietary-protocol products running on your network.

    PurposeThe purpose of this manual is to provide the technical information necessary to enable you to:

    Describes the features and uses of the ProVision network management system and provides task-oriented assistance in using the product to create and maintain a graphical representation of your network enterprise. This document describes how to start and exit user sessions, how to monitor and manage device status, performance, and event reporting, how to configure Stratex Networks devices, and how to generate supporting reports and graphs.

    Role Brief Description

  • Conventions and TerminologyGraphical Cues

    The following icons function as graphical cues used to characterize particular types of associated supporting information.

    Use of Bold Font

    Bold font is used for the names of on-screen elements such as; fields, buttons, and drop-down selection lists, tabs, for keywords, commands and for keys on the keyboard.

    Bold font is also used to indicate commands that the user needs to type in.

    Use of Italic Font

    Throughout this manual italic font is used to emphasize words and phrases, to introduce new terms, and for the titles of printed publications.

    Common Terminology

    ClickPoint the mouse pointer at the item you want to select, then quickly press and release the left mouse button.

    Right-ClickPoint the mouse pointer at the item you want to select, then quickly press and release the right mouse button.

    A caution icon denotes important information pertaining to damage to equipment, loss of data, or corruption of files.

    A warning icon denotes danger to life and/or limb.

  • Chapter 1. Introduction

    ProVision V is Stratex Networks new-generation Element Management System (EMS). ProVision is synonymous with the network management of Stratex Networks devices. As the new-generation EMS, ProVision V builds on our expertise, experience, and user feedback to provide significant advances in functionality and ease of use.

    The ProVision network management base is interoperable with third party products and proprietary operational support systems, and is easily extensible through a variety of standards-based and proprietary management protocols.

    ProVision V delivers an advanced, flexible, software solution for managing the devices running on your networkincluding Stratex Networks SNMP and proprietary protocol products and other SNMP-based devices.

    This manual includes chapters specific to the following operations:

    Eclipse Installation CDIf there are Eclipse radios on the network, install the Eclipse craft tool, Portal, on the ProVision server. Portal enables you to log into the Eclipse radios. The Portal software is contained on the Eclipse Installation CD 857-000004-001.

    Refer to the ProVision release notes for the compatible versions of Portal and ProVision software.

    Licensing ConsiderationsProVision will not run without a valid product license. Either a temporary evaluation license or a permanent license is required.

    Using a Trial Evaluation License

    A trial evaluation license (license.xml) is included on the ProVision CD. This license is automatically installed when you install the ProVision server.

    A ProVision evaluation license is valid for 30 days. When the expiry date is reached, the license key is no longer valid, all ProVision client sessions are stopped. The ProVision server, however, will remain running. The client sessions can be started only when a valid license file has been copied into the ProVision server directory.2-4 Stratex Networks

    A permanent license has no expiry date and is the standard product licensing medium. For information on requesting a permanent license, refer to Chapter 4.

    Tracker BoxThe Tracker Box, where supplied, enables secure remote access to ProVision servers and radio networks. It allows Stratex Networks engineers to remotely dial into your network and to provide assistance, when required.

    The Tracker Box includes a modem and an internal Ethernet card, and provides Ethernet access to your network.

    The Tracker Box must be connected to the ProVision server. There is some initial configuration required to set the ringing cadence to the country of installation. However, no configuration is required on the ProVision server as the Stratex Networks Help Desk personnel perform this function.

    DatabasesProVision V 5.4 supports the MySQL database, version 3.23.49-max.

    Nodes SupportedProVision V 5.4 supports in excess of 10,000 nodes. Where support for more than 5,000 nodes is required, please contact Stratex for additional information.

    Administrator Username and PasswordThe default administrator username and password is set as:

    username: admin

    password: admin

    The admin password must be changed for security purposes. For more information, refer to Setting Up Procedures on page 5-3.

    ProVision Server IP AddressThe ProVision Server IP address is required when applying for a ProVision license, and uploading the client.exe from the ProVision server to the client PC. To determine the Server IP address, refer to Determining the Servers IP Address on page 4-3.

    The Server IP address supplied must be static, because the ProVision license is based on the IP address and the IP address is verified each time the server starts up.614-330053-001 Rev 007 April 2005 2-5

    Setting Up Computer EquipmentIf computer equipment is supplied by Stratex Networks:

    Unpack the equipment and verify the computer and accessories received match the equipment ordered, by checking off the packing slip.

    If there are any discrepancies between the equipment ordered and the equipment supplied, or if the equipment is damaged, contact the Stratex Networks Help Desk.

    Connect accessories and turn computer on.

    If the computer equipment is not supplied by Stratex Networks:

    Format hard drive/s and install Windows operating system, if not already installed.

    Connect accessories and turn computer on.

    Setting the Administrative RightsEnsure you have admin rights for the PC on which you are installing the ProVision Server software. If you do not have the correct rights, the software does not install correctly.

    Changing Regional OptionsThe Regional (date and time) location must be set to an English based locale. This is so ProVision can correctly interpret the date and time of events entering the system.2-6 Stratex Networks

  • ProVision V Installation and Administration GuideDisabling PC Power Saving SettingBy default, computers with Windows 2000 installed go into standby power mode after 15 minutes of operation. This needs to be disabled for ProVision computers as this results in clients being unable to logon to the server.

    This procedure must be performed for all server and client Windows-based computers using ProVision.

    To disable power saving mode:

    1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Options.

    The Power Options Properties window is displayed.

    2. Change the System standby to Never.

    3. To save your changes, click OK.

    Follow the connection instructions label on the top of the Tracker Box.

    Setting the Ring Cadence

    In some cases, it is necessary to configure the Trackers Country of installation setting to enable an outside connection to be made to the unit via the telephone connection and the PSTN.

    If the Tracker box is connected to a telephone line and the device does not answer when called from outside, then more than likely the problem is related to the Tracker not recognizing the ringing cadence (frequency of occurrence of ringing signal) and therefore not recognizing that it is being called.

    To change the Country of installation setting you need to connect to the tracker via a Telnet session.614-330053-001 Rev 007 April 2005 2-8

    The tracker has an RJ45 connection which is used for connecting to the Local network. This port will be used to connect to a computer, to enable the initial configuration.

    The default IP address assigned to the Tracker box is 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0

    The computer (laptop) must be assigned an IP address which is in the same network range, but with a different host ID to that of the Tracker box.

    Configuring the Network and Host IP Address

    1. Configure a laptop computer with IP address 192.168.1.5

    2. Select Start > Settings > Network and Dial up Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties.

  • 3. Select TCP/IP and click Properties.

    4. Enter the IP address192.168.1.5

    5. Click OK.

    The computers IP address is set to 192.168.1.5.

    Connecting the Computer to the Tracker Box

    There are two ways that the computer may be connected to the Tracker using the Ethernet connection.

    Using a Hub Switch

    Connecting the computer and Tracker box to the hub, using straight Cat 5 connections.

    Using a crossover cable

    Connecting the computer directly to the Tracker using a Cat 5 crossover cable.2-10 Stratex Networks

    To confirm you have communication:

    1. Open a DOS window.

  • Opening a Telnet Session

    To open a Telnet session to the Tracker box:

    1. At the DOS prompt, type Telnet 192.168.1.1

    2. Type the login and password entries.

    The Tracker Configuration Menu window is displayed.

    To change the ring cadence:

    1. Type 1 for System Settings.

    2. Type 9 for country of installation.The default country of installation is typically UK.

    The countries to choose from are:

    3. Change this setting to the name of your country, for example, France.

    The System Settings window is updated and displays the new country of installation.

    Via browser access the client PC installs the ProVision client software from the server. This option would be used, for example, if the client PC does not have a CD-ROM drive. For more information, refer to Client Software Installation From the Server on page 2-19.

    Prerequisites

    The ProVision server software is installed on the server computer.

    The client and server computers are on the LAN.

    This tool extracts the network topology information from ProVision, outputs a ProVision V compatible topology file, and a log file which you can view to see any problems that were encountered.

    During the duration of the topology export a window is displayed detailing what is happening and how long the export is estimated to take.

    Objects with an illegal character are not exported, an error message is displayed and the objects data is listed in the export log. These objects must be manually deployed in ProVision V.614-330053-001 Rev 007 April 2005 3-3

  • To install and run the topology migration tool:

    1. Copy the file TopologyExport_x.x.x.tar to the directory in which the tool is to be installed.

    2. Extract the file TopologyExport_x.x.x.tar

    tar xvf TopologyExport.tar3. Change to the newly created directory

    ./installThis configures the environment the tool runs in.

    If you are running a Solaris 2.6 system, you will be asked to install patches. Enter 'y' to install them. After installing the patches you will be told that it may be necessary to restart your system; you do not have to do this.

    This will also configure a Java runtime environment for this tool. You will be asked to accept the terms and conditions of the Java environment. After accepting these, Java will be installed and the tool is ready to run.

    5. Run the tool

    If there are objects with duplicate names, the first occurrence will be exported with the name unchanged, further occurrences retain the original name but with a number in brackets added to the end of the name.

    The export.log provides a summary of problems encountered during the export, and the corrective action taken.

    Edit the Topology File (CemfExport.xml)

    Objects will not export properly if they have an unrecognized radio type or are not reachable through the network. The tool includes as much information as possible about the object and it is commented out in the topology file. When this occurs, you are notified by a warning message. Once the export is complete, you can edit the file to uncomment the affected radios.

    For example, when Altium radios are not reachable through the network the type of Altium cannot be determined and are exported as "altiumUnknown" and commented out.614-330053-001 Rev 007 April 2005 3-5

  • Upgrading ProVision V 5.3 to 5.4In this upgrade process your ProVision V database is exported and then imported when the new 5.4 ProVision V server and client software has been installed

    The migration tool has two parts:1. Database Export and Conversion This is a standalone command line program that runs in the ProVision server director. It exports the current active ProVision database to an intermediate XML format. The converter then parses and modifies the XML files as necessary to convert the database from 5.3 to 5.4.

    For this release the conversion includes:

    Adds 15_minute_performance and daily_performance properties to TNET devices, which by default are false.

    Removes the properties, state, next_state and is_agent from DXR devices.

    Migrates the old services from 5.3 to the service table used in 5.4 and deletes the old service properties.

  • Trial Evaluation ProVision LicenseAs soon as the server software install is complete, the 30-day license trial automatically begins. You have 30 days trial use of the ProVision V server software. By the end of this trial period you have to obtain, and install a permanent license to continue to use the software.

    Starting five days prior to the evaluation license expiring, each day the ProVision Manager will generate an event warning that the evaluation license is due to expire. The event can be viewed in the main Event Browser or by right-clicking on the ProVision V Manager icon and selecting Event Browser from the popup menu displayed.Figure 4-1.     A critical event is generated on the day prior to the trial license expiring. If the system does not find an updated license file when the 30-day trial period has expired all ProVision user sessions are be closed and you will not be able to start a new session.   • Chapter 6. Access Control

    ProVision User AccessAccess to ProVision functions is controlled by security groups. A security group defines the group of functions to which a user has access. There are two predefined security groups that you can apply to a ProVision user:

    NOC Operator

    NOC Engineer

    Part of an administrators role is to create ProVision user accounts and associate each account with at least one security group. The user account inherits the access control defined by the security groups it belongs to. A user account can belong to different security groups and these groups control their access to the ProVision functions.

    Before a user can start ProVision, they must have a username and password. When the user logs in, using the username and password, ProVision validates these before starting the ProVision GUI.

    A security log records user activities such as logging in, logging out and changing password. Only you, as administrator have access to the security log.Radio Security AccessXP4 radios have a security system that can be activated. If security access is required for an XP4 radio, the valid usernames and passwords are set up in the radio.

    If the security system has been activated, ProVision must have a valid username and password to login into an XP4 radio and access the radios diagnostic

  • The security group that the ProVision user is assigned to, determines access to the XP4 diagnostics. When a ProVision user selects an XP4 radio diagnostics, ProVision requests access to the radios diagnostics. The request will contain a username and password, that has been set up in ProVision. The radio verifies the data entered and if valid allows the ProVision user access to its diagnostic functions.

    Creating ProVision User AccountsEach ProVision user must be assigned a unique login username and password.

    A ProVision password must have at least 6 and at most 32 alphanumeric characters, and is case sensitive. Contact details are optional but this is a useful location to store phone numbers and email address information.

    A user account can belong to more than one security group.

  • Viewing the Security LogThe security log enables you to check on ProVision user activities that generate normal and informational ProVision events.

    The security log is displayed in an event browser window. You can change and save, the filter settings and browser options just like any other event browser.

    To view the security log:

    1. Right-click the ProVision Manager icon.

    2. Select Security Log from the popup menu displayed.

  • ProVision V Installation and Administration GuideAdding/Editing Radio Security Access AccountsThis function relates to XP4 radios that have access security activated, that is ProVision must provide a valid username and password to access the radios diagnostic functions.

    Within ProVision you can set the username and password on a per region, site, or individual radio basis. If all XP4 radios on the network have the same username and password access, select the network and apply the username and password. Where XP4 radios have their own username and password access, enter these individually.

    The username and password set up in ProVision must match those stored in the radio. When a ProVision user selects an XP4 radios diagnostics (shown in Figure 6-4) or configuration viewer, ProVision automatically sends the username and password to the radio, the radio verifies the data is valid, and allows ProVision access to its diagnostic functions.

    1. Select Administration > Radio Security Accounts.

    2. Highlight the radio/s for which you want to add or edit, the username and password. For example, to apply the same username and password to all XP4 radios in Wellington, select the Wellington container.

    3. Click Set/Edit.

    The Set/Edit Password window is displayed.

    Topology ImportThis function imports a previously exported network topology file. The Tree and Map Viewers are automatically populated with containers and devices.

    In a ProVision 2.3/3.0 network topology file, CemfExport.xml, duplicate objects are renamed adding a bracketed number. These duplicate objects are imported into ProVision where you can rename them.

    Any problems encountered during the import are displayed in the Import Results panel and recorded in the ProVisionVClient/Provision.log. Objects that were not imported can be manually deployed and managed.

    To import a network > topology file:

    1. Select File > Topology Import.

    The Topology Import window is displayed.

    2. Click the ... button.

    The Open window is displayed.

    Topology ExportThis function exports the network objects and hierarchy to an .xml file. The network topology can be exported for several reasons, as a backup, for support diagnostic purposes, for 3rd party northbound integration, and for future migrating to a later version of ProVision.

    The filename should include the date the file was exported.

    To export a network topology file:

    1. Select File > Topology Export.

    The Topology Export window is displayed.

    2. Click the ... button and browse to the location in which to store the topology file.

    The Save window is displayed.

    3. Type a descriptive name in the File Name field.

    4. Click Save.

    The Save window closes and the Topology Export window is displayed.

    Monthly

    Copy the last database backup to a CD-RO, which is then stored off-site. Figure 8-3 on page 8-5 for an overview of the recommended monthly procedure.

    Annually

    Backup the network topology file.

    Adhoc

    Prior to any upgrade of ProVision.

    When any significant changes are made to the database, a database backup (including event and performance data) and a copy of the network topology file should be copied to CD.

    When should I backup? You should select a time when there is minimal operator activity on ProVision.

  • Restoring the ProVision DatabaseYou would restore the ProVision database from a backup if the database were corrupted. The restore overwrites the existing data in the database with the backup data.

    Database backups can be stored locally on the Server hard drive, on a network drive, or externally on a CD.

    For ProVision to restore from a backup, the backup folder and backuplisting.xml file must be in the following directory:

    \ProVisionVServer\mysql\backup

    To restore the ProVision database:

    1. Ensure the backup folder and backuplisting.xml file are in the following directory:
